The Brandeis University Library was where much of this thesis was written and provided most of the books and papers cited. I also visited the Massachusetts Historical Society, the New York Public Library, and the New-York Historical Society to conduct research. Professor Michael Willrich was a useful sounding board for early ideas and generously took the time to give advice and feedback, despite being on sabbatical. The entire faculty and staff of the History Department were all incredibly helpful and supportive. I also owe a great deal of thanks to my fellow History thesis writers. -

Copyright 1928 The Society of Colonial Wars in the Stci tc of New Jersey Press oj Innes & Sons Philadelphia PREFACE N the foreword of "The First Americans" the Editors say, "The beginning of the thirteen English Colonies, so big I with destiny, have stirred the reverent curiosity of Ameri' can historians generation after generation." It is one of the ob' jects of the Society of Colonial Wars to promote an interest in and knowledge of Colonial history, not only by historians but by the ordinary man who professes that he has no time to devote to things that are past. In this day when distance is made unimportant by the motor vehicle, and we can in a day cover a mileage, which would have taken many days in Colonial times, there is no excuse for unfamiliarity or lack of knowledge of the historic spots in one's own State. When the State is one with a his- tory so fascinating and so closely connected with our National history, there is even less excuse for ignorance. -

The Name Says It All Multigenerational Social Mobility in Switzerland, 1550-2019 Melanie Häner / Christoph A
The Name Says It All Multigenerational Social Mobility in Switzerland, 1550-2019 Melanie Häner / Christoph A. Schaltegger IFF-HSG Working Papers Working Paper No. 2020 - 1 December 2020 Institute of Public Finance, Fiscal Law and Law & Economics (IFF-HSG) THE NAME SAYS IT ALL ∗ MULTIGENERATIONAL SOCIAL MOBILITY IN SWITZERLAND, 1550-2019 Melanie Häner1 and Christoph A. Schaltegger2 1corresponding author, University of Lucerne, [email protected], ORCID 2University of Lucerne and University of St. Gallen, [email protected] Preliminary version - December 5, 2020 Social mobility is a key element of meritocratic societies. We analyze multigenerational social mobility with a hand-collected yearly Swiss dataset for the timespan from 1550 to 2019. With our surname- based approach, we measure an average persistence rate of 0.42 over 15 generations. We show how close the different social status indicators match with each other using surnames. A moderate cycli- cal pattern indicates that social mobility was lowest in wartime generations with a major spreading afterwards. Furthermore, we show a significant influence of the grandparental generation. Overall, we conclude that the analysis of surnames is suitable for investigating the long-term permeability of the entire society. Surnames are a promising indicator for new insights into multigenerational social mobility. Keywords: multigenerational social mobility, education, profession, wealth, surnames JEL Codes: H00, I20, J62, N00. ∗We would like to express our gratitude to the Civil Registry Office of Basel (Massimo Di Nucci) and the Basel University Library (Lorenz Heiligensetzer and Monika Studer). Warm thanks to Neil Cummins and Klaus Gründler who enriched our project with their expertise and helpful comments. -

International Genevan Business in the Long Run: from the Greats Fairs to the Second Industrial Revolution
1 International Genevan business in the long run: from the greats fairs to the second industrial revolution Serge Paquier Professor of contemporary history Institute for Regionals and Patrimonials Studies University Jean Monnet of Saint-Etienne The aim of this paper is to determine specifics caracteristics of the Genevan international business activities in the long run. Geneva has two sucessives chances whih connect this city to the international level of economic. Firstly, the greats fairs insert the city in the expanding commerce of the end of the Middle Ages and secondly the huguenot refuge which attracts kwow-how, capitals, working forces and elites who control the commercial networks to buy primary ressources and to sell manufactured products in Geneva to larges markets. In this last context, emerge the first jewels of the crown, one in textile industry with printed calicoes and a second on in metallic work with clocks industry. But since the middle of the 18 th century, these jewels are threathened by the lust of the neighbouring state-nations which need to generate new economic ressources in order to resolve their fiscal crisis provokated by the costly wars of colonies. From this threat emerges in the last quarter of the 18 th century the first sept of an long industrial transition that will drive Geneva from the preindustrial jewels to the new jewels of the second industrial revolution, in particular in hydroelectricity. The aim of this paper is also to rehabilitate important steps as the thermical graft between the 1830’s and 1870’s years which was forgotten by a selective memory mostly attached to celebrate hydroelectrical and mechanical firms leaded by medium sized firms with 100 to 400 employees and with capital of one to three millions of francs until the end of the First World War. -
