List of problematic species Índice taxonómico Taxonomic index 6 PREFÁCIO Nos últimos anos, graças a um enorme esforço estimulado pelo Governo Regional e empreendido por investiga- dores da Universidade dos Açores, tem sido possível chegar mais próximo do número e da identificação das espécies existentes no arquipélago. Não é um trabalho fácil, já que exige cientistas experientes, familiarizados com o con- texto da Macaronésia, e que, em todas as áreas taxonómicas, tenham a capacidade de efectuar descrições, no caso das novas espécies, ou contextualizá-las na miríade envolvente. Apoiado em financiamentos internacionais, nacio- nais e regionais, desenvolveu-se já um importante trabalho de compilação que nos proporciona uma visão aclarada do retrato natural dos Açores actuais, e, inclusivamente, interessantes indícios sobre a ocupação do nosso território antes do povoamento. Esta obra, como se compreende facilmente, é o corolário momentâneo de um processo de conhecimento que ne- cessariamente prosseguirá. Constitui, também, uma oportunidade para que os cidadãos interessados possam usufruir de informação basilar para a compreensão do meio ecológico açoriano. A terra e o mar, utilizados pelos homens, são partilhados por outros inúmeros seres. E se alguns deles fazem parte do nosso quotidiano, outros são, de facto, fan- tásticos e inesperados. Deles se fala nesta publicação. Em pleno Ano Internacional para a Biodiversidade, é com particular agrado que registo, por exemplo, que o “pri- ôlo”, essa pequena ave da zona oriental da ilha de São Miguel, deixou de estar sob ameaça crítica de extinção. Isso não significa que tenha terminado o trabalho que nos motivou nos últimos dez anos e que o priôlo esteja a salvo, mas, num período de dificuldades, conseguimos recuperar uma espécie. Isso quer dizer que vale a pena continuar a desenvolver esforços para recuperar outras espécies, habitats e saberes culturais com eles relacionados. Foi também este ano que se tornou consensual que o “painho-de-Monteiro” é uma nova espécie para a ciência. Endémico de ilhéus da ilha Graciosa, esta ave é um paradigma da sobrevivência e uma representação viva de tena- cidade e sagacidade. Conhecer mais e melhor é a ambição saudável proposta ao longo das perto de quatrocentas páginas deste livro. Afinal, mais um passo em frente na indagação da identidade biológica dosAçores.
