B. BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES the Parks in the Study Area Are Home to a Wide Range of Biological Habitats and Species

BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES The parks in the Study Area are home to a wide range of biological habitats and species. This EIR section (1) describes the setting section for biological resources within the Study Area, (2) evaluates the potential impacts to biological resources related to implementation of the Wildfire Hazard Reduction and Resource Management Plan (the proposed project), and recommends appropriate mitigation measures where necessary. The reader should note that this section focuses on biological resources and conditions that are particularly relevant to the issue of wildfire hazard reduction. In the following developed shoreline parks, wildfire hazards are very low and fuel modification activities are not expected to be undertaken: Point Isabel; Middle Harbor Shoreline Park; Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach; and Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline. Vegetation in these shoreline parks is confined to irrigated landscaping, coastal strand, or coastal salt marsh which do not provide highly combustible fuels nor would they be subject to wildfire conditions. -

A widespread weed of waste places, cultivated land, and other open, modified habitats also locally common in damp sites in tussock grassland. Altitudinal range sea level to c.1000 m. FEATURES Annual to biennial herb. Stems numerous and erect, up to c.300 mm high, angled. Lower leaves sessile, to c.80 × 20 mm, oblanceolate to oblong, hairy on both surfaces; hairs not hooked; apex obtuse; upper leaves similar but smaller. Cymes ebracteate, elongating to slightly greater than leafy part of stem after flowering. Pedicels 1 to nearly 3× length of calyx at fruiting. Calyx 3-5 mm long, elongating to c.7 mm at fruiting; hairs spreading, often hooked towards base; lobes ± triangular, cut to about half the length of calyx. Corolla tube less than calyx-length; limb c.3 mm diameter, concave, blue; lobes entire. Style very short. Nutlets 1.5-2.5 × 0.75-1.0 mm, ovoid, acute, dark brown or black; rim present. It was first recognised in New Zealand in 1872. although rather weedy it is not regarded as a serious environmental weed. -

Our work is focused both in the internal relationships among representatives of Omphalodes main subgroups (and including Omphalodes verna, the type species), and their relationships with other Cynoglosseae genera that have been related to the Omphalodes group. Our phylogenetic analysis of ITS and trnL-trnF molecular markers establish close relationships of the American Omphalodes with the genus Mimophytum, and also with Cynoglossum paniculatum and Myosotidium hortensia. The southwestern European annual Omphalodes species form a discrete group deserving taxonomic recognition. We describe two new genera to reduce the paraphyly in the genus Omphalodes, accommodating the European annual species in Iberodes and Cynoglossum paniculatum in Mapuchea. The pollen of the former taxon is described in detail for the first time. Smith, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Botany Department of Biological Sciences Humboldt State Univerity Arcata, California 14 September 2018 The Redwood National and State Parks are located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties in coastal northwestern California. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -
Forget-Me-Not Myosotis
Forget-me-not Myosotis If ever a flower represented faithfulness and enduring love it is the dainty forget-me-not. There are many different species known by the same common name, however the water forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides) is native to Britain and has clear blue flowers with tiny yellow or white eyes, atop tall hairy stems. The flowers emerge from pale pink buds each spring, and this resilient little plant will keep flowering all through the summer. Forget-me-nots have been symbols of love and constancy since the Middle Ages, and have appeared in many works of art and poetry since that time. They were extremely popular on Victorian Valentine cards as the classic floral messenger, while they also make an appearance in DH Lawrence’s novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover. They are the perfect little flower for creating a meaningful posy. 48 Pomegranate Punica granatum The sweet and juicy pomegranate is surrounded by legend. Their stunning ruby-red flesh made them a powerful symbol of life and abundance. In Greek mythology, the goddess Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the underworld. Her mother, Demeter, goddess of the harvest, mourned for her and all crops and plants on Earth ceased to grow. Zeus commanded Persephone’s return, but as she had eaten six pomegranate seeds while in the underworld she was condemned to spend several months each year with Hades. This was the Greeks’ explanation for the seasons as the return of Persephone meant the beginning of spring. Today, the pomegranate still has strong symbolism in Greek culture. -

AUDLEY END Winter/Spring planting Erysimum ‘Sugar Rush Purple’ Flowering throughout winter and into spring this cultivar has larger owers than standard wallowers in lavender purple and a sweet scent. Tulipa ‘Recreado’ A late spring dark purple owering tulip, it is one of the tallest cup- or goblet-shaped tulips. Myosotis sylvatica ‘Dwarf Indigo’ A small and compact forget-me-not with deep rich blue owers from early spring and forming a carpet under taller owering bulbs. Tulipa ‘Don Quichotte’ A stately triumph tulip with vibrant, cherry pink owers that appear in mid-spring. Primula ‘Showstopper Cream’ A polyanthus type primulas with lime cream owers with a yellow centre that rst appear in late winter atop bright green foliage. Tulipa ‘Angelique’ A soft pink, double, bowl-shaped tulip, reminiscent of peony owers, owering in late spring and is often one of the last tulips to ower. Narcissus ‘Avalanche’ A strongly scented daffodil with showy clusters of around 15 small owers with white petals and bowl-shaped yellow trumpets in mid spring. Primula ‘Crescendo Pink and Rose Shades’ A polyanthus with large owers in shades of rose-pink, with a conspicuous yellow eye owering from winter into spring. Tulipa ‘Merlot’ A deep crimson-carmine coloured cup-shaped tulip with pointed petals which owers from mid to late spring. Tulipa ‘White Triumphator’ A pure white tulip with petals that arch upwards giving the ower a uted shape, owering from mid to late spring. Erysimum ‘Sugar Rush Orange’ Flowering throughout winter and into spring this cultivar has yellow to burnt orange owers with a rich spicy scent. -

Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 D (Barrowhill, Otterpool and East Stour River) The tetrad TR13 D is an area of mostly farmland with several small waterways, of which the East Stour River is the most significant, and there are four small lakes (though none are publically-accessible), the most northerly of which is mostly covered with Phragmites. Other features of interest include a belt of trees running across the northern limit of Lympne Old Airfield (in the extreme south edge of the tetrad), part of Harringe Brooks Wood (which has no public access), the disused (Otterpool) quarry workings and the westernmost extent of Folkestone Racecourse and. The northern half of the tetrad is crossed by the major transport links of the M20 and the railway, whilst the old Ashford Road (A20), runs more or less diagonally across. Looking south-west towards Burnbrae from the railway Whilst there are no sites of particular ornithological significance within the area it is not without interest. A variety of farmland birds breed, including Kestrel, Stock Dove, Sky Lark, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Lesser Whitethroat, Yellowhammer, and possibly Buzzard, Yellow Wagtail and Meadow Pipit. Two rapidly declining species, Turtle Dove and Spotted Flycatcher, also probably bred during the 2007-11 Bird Atlas. The Phragmites at the most northerly lake support breeding Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting. In winter Fieldfare and Redwing may be found in the fields, whilst the streams have attracted Little Egret, Snipe and, Grey Wagtail, with Siskin and occasionally Lesser Redpoll in the alders along the East Stour River. Corn Bunting may be present if winter stubble is left and Red Kite, Peregrine, Merlin and Waxwing have also occurred. -
