Livelooping-Musiker sind meist Solo-Musiker, die digitale Loop-Geräte (im Prinzip Echogeräte mit u.U. sehr langer Laufzeit) benutzen, um sich selbst in Echtzeit zu „multiplizieren“, d.h. die live erzeugten Klänge zu wiederholen und zu komplexen Klangschichten aufzutürmen. Das können rhythmische Gebilde sein, aber auch dichte Wolken von Ambient-Klängen. Auch ganze Songstrukturen können live mit Loops aufgebaut und dann als Grundlage für Soli benutzt werden. Der erste Livelooper (damals noch mit Hilfe von Tonbandgeräten = Tape Loops) war der amerikanische Minimalist Terry Riley, der in den späten 60ern mit seinem psychedelischen Loop- Stück „A Rainbow in Curved Air“ und nächtelangen loop-basierten „All Night Flights“ weltbekannt wurde. Später brachte der Ambient-Musik-Erfinder Brian Eno, dessen erstes Ambient-Werk "Discreet Music" mit Tape Loops realisiert wurde, dem King-Crimson-Gitarristen Robert Fripp diese Technik bei. Fripp erzeugte dann in den späten 70ern mit seiner elektrischen Gitarre und seinem „Frippertronics“- Tonbandsystem ungewöhnliche Klanggebilde und machte die Möglichkeiten des Livelooping vor allem Gitarristen bewußt, die nach neuen musikalischen Wegen suchten. Seit den 80ern kann Livelooping mit Hilfe von analogen, später digitalen Loop-Delays erzeugt werden; es gibt mittlerweile eine reichhaltige Auswahl an einfachen und komplexen Loop-Geräten sowie an Software für das Livelooping aus dem Computer. Eine wachsende weltweite Community von Loop-Musikern diskutiert seit über 10 Jahren die technischen und musikalischen Aspekte des Livelooping auf der Loopers Delight-Internet-Mailingliste, und in Amerika, Europa und Japan finden regelmäßig Festivals für Loop-basierte Musik statt.

Über eine ebenso erfreuliche wie unerwartete Reunion durften sich die Kabarettfreunde kürzlich freuen: Tresenlesen, das legendäre Duo aus dem Ruhrpott, das in den 90er Jahren die Lesebühnen- Tradition mitbegründete und zu den Pionieren der Komischen Literatur gehört, hat sich kürzlich wieder zusammengetan – nach 20 Jahren. Jochen Malmsheimer und Frank Goosen, die im Jahr 2000 ihre Zusammenarbeit beendeten und jeweils erfolgreiche Solokarrieren starteten, trafen sich am Ostersamstag auf einer Theaterbühne in Bochum und präsentierten dem umständehalber nur virtuell vorhandenen Publikum alte und neue Texte. Und es funktionierte: Die alte Magie war wieder da, die Chemie stimmte, die Interaktion klappte wie in alten Zeiten. Steht nur zu hoffen, daß dies kein einmaliges Ereignis bleibt, sondern daß die beiden Kabarett-Titanen weiterhin gemeinsam ihr Publikum begeistern – vielleicht auch mit einem neuen Bühnenprogramm, sobald es die äußeren Umstände wieder zulassen.

During that span the band gradually adapted to a tighter than ever on 14 changing musical landscape, morphing from prototypical neo- progressive band, replete with references to Peter Gabriel-era studio release Genesis, to crack contemporary rock band. Rock, yes — but still progressive? According to guitarist Steve Rothery, yes, probably, but bassist Pete Trewavas isn’t so sure. By ROSS BOISSONEAU “It’s a rock band,” Trewavas says flatly, before adding, “I’m not even sure it’s a rock band.” “Some people call you progressive,” says Rothery, “but they mean that as an insult, like the worst ‘70s excess or self- indulgent twaddle. The true meaning is it doesn’t have to conform to short-radio format. “You can absorb classical, jazz. It [progressive music] has more meaning than most conventional pop songs. In that regard, yes, we’re a progressive band.” Drummer Ian Mosley is more succinct. “I’ve never really thought about progressive rock, I much prefer to think of music as good or bad – whether it’s long or short,” he says. Not that this discussion settles anything definitively.
