With vast libraries of film and television a mere finger tap away for many of us, it behoves any film festival to choose more carefully than ever. At the speed with which today’s audiences demand access to films, our haul from May’s Cannes Film Festival sits squarely with the zeitgeist – but our commitment to getting Inherent Vice, one of the great American films of late 2014, onto the giant screen in July 2015 almost looks like a nostalgic gesture. That is, until you are sitting in the Embassy completely absorbed in the present tense of the film’s unique fictional universe. Programming NZIFF is more than ever about celebrating the public occasion of movie-going, privileging the big screen experience and enlivening the interaction between films and audiences, ideally with the Resene Resene filmmakers present to contribute in person. The only challenge about finding 150 or so films that fit that agenda in Gorse Pavlova 2015 was finding even more. We never forget that it’s the support of its audience that keeps NZIFF alive and kicking. Ticket sales contributed 88% of our income in 2014. The major sponsorship we receive from the New Zealand Film Commission is a gratifying institutional endorsement of that support, and we appreciate it immensely. Russell McVeagh once again sponsor our Gala screening allowing us to share their hospitality with other key Wellington stakeholders and supporters. We welcome Resene for their second year as sponsors of myriad films from New Zealand filmmakers. Māori Television and RadioLIVE are great media partners. NEC very generously escorted us into the digital era and remain highly valued sponsors now that we are fully ensconced. There is not one film print at this year’s festival of film. Bringing colour to kiwi life since 1946 We’re all of us aboard this enterprise because filmmakers gave whatever it took to get their pictures into the world in the first place. So one wanted to contemplate the immanence of the past in a Thai hospital; another to orchestrate the Resene’s big screen story began back in 1946 when Ted Nightingale started making paint from his Wellington garage. The film will screen at the Ziegfeld Theatre on November 4. Directed by the Grammy and Emmy award winner Thom Zimny, the film was shot last year at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ in an unconventional manner without any audience in attendance. Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau has said this presentation “best captures the starkness of the original album.” The film will be released on DVD as part of the box set “The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story” later in November. “We wanted to give fans a one night only opportunity to see this spectacular performance on the Ziegfeld’s big screen,” said DOC NYC Artistic Director Thom Powers. A portion of the proceeds from this screening will be donated to the Danny Fund/Melanoma Research Alliance – a non-profit foundation devoted to advancing melanoma research and awareness set up after the 2008 passing of Danny Federici, longtime Springsteen friend and E-Street Band member. DOC NYC will help launch a new promo campaign of shorts called “Moments of Truth,” in which noteworthy figures (actors, politicians, musicians, etc) describe particular documentary moments that moved them.

International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

This Film is A Poem 1,380 words - by Cynthia Close - published in 2016 in Documentary magazine- Review of the newly remastered Criterion released A Poem is a Naked Person, by Les Blank commissioned by Leon Russell, shot from 1972-74. Blu-Ray edition contains: *90 minute restored feature A Poem is a Naked Person *New conversation between musician Leon Russell and Harrod Blank, Les Blank’s son *Excerpts from a 2013 Q&A with Les Blank *The new documentary, A Film’s Forty-year Journey: The Making of “A Poem is a Naked Person”, 2016 *Out in the Woods, a short documentary by Maureen Gosling *An Essay by critic Kent Jones Why has A Poem is a Naked Person, a film Les Blank considered the greatest he ever made, remained virtually unknown and unseen, until now, over forty years after it was completed? An answer to this question can be found in the newly restored, Criterion released Blu-Ray DVD. It is clear that such a project would never have happened if it were not for the persistence and memory of “being there”, of Harrod Blank, Les Blank’s son. As a young boy, tagging along with his filmmaker dad in the backwaters of 1970’s Oklahoma he drew admiring portraits in magic marker of Leon Russell, the intended subject of his father’s film. It was the year following the release of Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a classic concert film starring Joe Cocker and Russell who at that time was at the peak of his fame. Russell was an accomplished pianist, session musician, and star performer who was in the process of building a top notch studio and music compound ninety minutes outside of Tulsa when he and his then-partner Denny Cordell commissioned Les Blank to make what they may have envisioned as a biopic with Leon Russell at the center.

  • Newsletter-Archiv: September 2016

The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked.

1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.
