Applied Communications Management. Email: [email protected] v ABSTRACT The clerics of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) do not have an employment relationship with the Church. This is mainly because when they engage with one another, they never sign an employment contract, nor is there ever an intention to do so. This lack of employment relationship between ACSA and its clerics makes the clerics to not have access to earthly institutions like the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and the Labour Court in an event that they have a dispute with ACSA. Disputes are supposed to be resolved using the internal processes as prescribed by ACSA’’s Constitution and Canons. Those clerics who have taken ACSA to CCMA or Labour Court have discovered that these institutions are not available to them. Courts have ruled several times that clerics are not employees of ACSA, and for this reason, access to the CCMA and the Labour Court is not available to them. This research study sought to establish if clerics are aware of their “not employed” status with ACSA, the implications of this and whether they are aware of internal remedies available to them if there is a conflict. The study further sought to establish if ACSA is doing anything to make clerics aware of their “not employed” status. A pretested questionnaire was designed and was used to collect data from clerics. These questionnaires were sent to 120 respondents, that is, 50 from the Diocese of Zululand and 70 from the Diocese of Natal. All data from the 53 questionnaires that were returned by the respondents were captured into a database using Microsoft Excel version 2010. This was analysed using the STATA IC version 13 statistical software. Data was presented using different types of graphs and tables. The findings were tested using the Pearson Chi-square test to determine the statistical significance of differences between the variables. The findings showed that the majority of clerics are not aware of their “not employed” status with ACSA. It was also found that the majority does not know the implications of this “not employed” status and they are not aware of the internal remedies that are prescribed by the Canons to resolve conflicts. As late as 1883 half of the Anglican priests in South Africa had never attended a theological college. The system of theological education which developed afterwards became increasingly segregated. It also became more centralised, in a different manner for each race. A central theological college for white ordinands was established in Grahamstown in 1898 while seven diocesan theological colleges were opened for blacks during the same period. These were reduced to two in the 1930s, St Peter’s College in Johannesburg and St Bede’s in Umtata. The former became one of the constituent colleges of the Federal Theological Seminary in Alice, Eastern Cape, in 1963. n 1963 the Federal Theological Seminary of Southern Africa, an ecumenical seminary jointly established by the Anglican, Methodist, I Presbyterian and Congregational churches, opened in Alice, Eastern Cape.     Missionalia 41:1 (April 2013) 5-21 5 Migrants, mission and theological education Stephen Hayes1 Abstract The Christian Church has faced problems of mission and migrancy from its inception. This paper, however, is limited to southern Africa in the last fifty years, using examples from the Anglican and Orthodox Churches, based mainly on the personal experiences of the author. It begins with the story of a migratory cattle herder in northwestern Namibia who became an evangelist and was trying to plant a church among a nomadic people. There have been other patterns of migration in Southern Africa, including migratory labour, forced removals, refugees, and immigration, both legal and illegal. Theological Education by Extension (TEE), which developed about 40-50 years ago, had the potential to meet some of these needs, though emphasis was often put in the wrong places, so that it did not fulfil the promise of meeting the needs of migrant ministries as well as had been hoped. Materials and resources often had to be improvised, but in many ways much has been achieved. Introduction In this article I shall try to look at historical Christian responses to migration and mission, and to the challenges to theological education that these have posed. That is a pretty broad field, and so I shall limit the scope in time mostly to the last fifty years, and in space mostly to Southern Africa. One reason for those limitations is that that is largely the scope of my personal experience, and my personal experience has been primarily in the Anglican and Orthodox Churches, and, to a lesser extent, some African Independent Churches.

The library consisted of books, pamphlets, periodicals and manuscripts. This Guide only contains the descriptions of the manuscript material (covering the period between 1835 to the present). The other categories are listed separately. The Anglican manuscripts were initially described in Section 2 of the University Library's Guide to the Archives and Papers which ran through three editions between 1967-1975 and a Cumulative Supplement 1975-1979. With the growth of the church’s collection of manuscripts, it became more manageable to publish a separate guide to it. This edition of the Guide to the Archives of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa lists all Anglican Church collections described in previous guides, together with all accessions between 2000 and 2009. Arrangement of the entries is by accession order to facilitate future updatings of the Guide. The missing numbers in the numerical sequence relate to general (not Anglican Church) collections which are described in the Guide to the Archives and Papers, 12th edition, 2010.
