  • An Exploration of Intersubjectivity in Clinical Interactions Involving Children with and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
An exploration of intersubjectivity in clinical interactions involving children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) Kerrie Megan Delves ORCID identifier: 0000-0002-8966-1352 Doctor of Philosophy September, 2017 The School of Languages and Linguistics, The University of Melbourne. The thesis is being submitted in total fulfilment of the degree. Abstract This thesis explores interactional behaviours related to achieving intersubjectivity in clinical interactions involving children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Intersubjectivity is shared understanding between participants and this study views communication as the site for the establishment, maintenance and restoration of intersubjectivity. The study of intersubjectivity in children with and without ASD is potentially revealing as impairments in social communication are a core component of ASD (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) and difficulties understanding others’ perspectives are well-documented in ASD research (Leslie, 1991). This study uses a corpus of approximately 60 hours of dyadic interactions involving 40 children participating in standardised cognitive tests administered by a researcher in a laboratory setting. Half the children are typically developing (TD) and half have ASD. Interactions were transcribed and analysed using Conversation Analysis (CA) methodology. The data is established as institutional due to the goal-oriented focus of the interaction and the participants’ prescribed roles as test- administrator and test-taker. The study presents an overview of interactional behaviours demonstrating problems with intersubjectivity, including repair sequences. Repair sequences containing open class repair initiation (OCRI) (Drew, 1997) are examined in detail. OCRI consists of repair initiated by the other, in the next turn, using a token such as ‘sorry?’, ‘huh?’ or ‘what?’.

  • The Uses of Animation 1
The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator.

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991).

NEW TITLES The Generous Fish BY JACQUELINE JULES, ILLUSTRATED BY FRANCES TYRRELL Inspired by Jewish folklore, The Generous Fish is the story of a young boy named Reuven who takes a verse from scripture to “cast your bread upon the waters” (Ecclesiastes 11:1) quite literally. The result of his daily act is a giant talking fish with golden scales! Boy and fish spend idyllic days together until the villagers realize those scales are real gold. Every villager has good reason to ask for one. Devorah needs clothes for her children. Old Joseph needs money for a cane. The fish says he has plenty to share. But he grows weak from giving away too much, too fast. Can Reuven stand up to the village and save his friend? Jacqueline Jules is the author of forty books for young readers, including the award-winning Zapato Power series, Never Say a Mean Word Again: A Tale from Medieval Spain, and Feathers for Peacock. A former school librarian and teacher, Jacqueline enjoys visiting schools to share her passion for reading and writing.
