POCOMOKE SOUND Growing Area # 075 Accomack County Shoreline Sanitary Survey

Date: 20 June 2019 Survey Period: September 27, 2018 – June 18, 2019 Surveyed By: R.C. Snead, B.T. Charnock, & E.M. Yeargan Number of Properties and Near Shore Samples Collected: 150

SECTION A: GENERAL

This survey area extends from Reference Point 76 at the - state line to Reference Point 77 at Long Point, including the Pocomoke River and shorelines between the aforementioned two points, and including Pitts Creek (Wagram Creek), Bullbeggar Creek (Tunnels Mill Branch and Hancock Branch), Line Gut, Double Ditches, Holdens Creek (North Branch and Sandy Bottom Branch), Robin Hood Bay (Jacks Creek), Starling Creek, Fishing Creek (Mantrap gut), Drum Bay, and all associated tributaries.

Elevations in the area vary from 5’ along the shoreline to a maximum of 20’ in the outer reaches of the watershed. The economy depends largely upon seafood and agriculture, with a strong emphasis on broiler chicken production and Tyson’s Foods, Inc. The population density throughout the area is relatively sparse with moderate concentrations around Saxis, Sanford, and Withams, and with a small degree of development currently underway. There is extensive marshland present in the survey area.

Meteorological data from NOAA MPE station # 75-Q8 indicate that the area received a total rainfall of 27.21” for the survey period. A monthly breakdown of rainfall is as follows: Sept 27-30, 2018 0.21” December 2.79” March 3.60” June 1-18 1.27” October 2.27” January 2019 3.71” April 3.22” November 3.26” February 3.97” May 2.91”

Significant changes from the previous survey include: a) The VDOT Route 13 Information Center Sewage treatment facility was connected to the Pocomoke City sewage system and was removed from the Area 75 survey. b) The Commonwealth Chesapeake Co. Power Plant, located at 3415 White Oak Way in Hallwood, was added to include an Industrial Waste-Indirect deficiency. c) A significant number of Solar Energy Collection Farms were constructed in the area since the last survey in 2007. d) The number of animal pollution sources dropped from 30 to 24.

Shoreline Survey # 075 Page 2 e) Two additional Industrial Waste-Direct sites were added to the survey, both in close proximity to the pre-existing KMX Chemical facility.

Copies of Bacteriological, Hydrographic and Shellfish Closure data are available at the area office for review. Copies of the current condemnation notices and maps are available via the internet at www.vdh.virginia.gov/shellfish/.

Information in this report is gathered by and primarily for use of the Division of Shellfish Safety, Virginia Department of Health, in order to fulfill its responsibilities of shellfish growing area supervision and classification. However, the data are made available to various agencies participating in shellfish program coordinated activities or other interested parties. The Engineering Appendix is available by request from the Richmond Office of the Division of Shellfish Safety.

Report copies are provided to the local health department for corrective action of deficiencies listed on the summary page in Sections B.2. and B.3. and to the Department of Environmental Quality for their information. The Division of Soil and Water Conservation is provided information on possible sources of animal pollution found in Section E.

This report lists only those properties which have a sanitary deficiency or have other environmental significance. "DIRECT" indicates that the significant activity or deficiency has a direct impact on shellfish waters. Individual field forms with full information on properties listed in this report are on file in the Central Office of the Division of Shellfish Safety and are available for reference until superseded by a subsequent resurvey of the area. Data in the report is also made available to local health departments and other agencies to address items that may be out of compliance with their regulatory programs. Copies of VPDES Permits and inspections are available at the Department of Environmental Quality, Tidewater Regional Office (DEQ/TRO).
