MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS City of Port Adelaide Enfield Councillors share their favourite spots in their Wards with us. We would love to see where your own favourite location is in the City. See page 4 for more information about our #LiveLovePAE photo campaign. LEADERSHIP A City confident in its leaders SEMAPHORE WARD The Semaphore Ward has the huge advantage of having two wide main street boulevards, in Semaphore Road and Jetty Road. One of my favourite places, along with many locals and visitors, is the Semaphore grassed median strip, as in summer it fills up with families eating fish and chips. While Jetty Road is more low key, it is undergoing a quiet redevelopment, with a range of quirky shops alongside the grand Largs Pier Hotel. I have always loved the bargain movies at our old-time Odeon Star Semaphore Cinema, but a recent favourite spot is one of the newer businesses, the nearby Sweet Amber bar. My pick from their great range is their chocolate stout - a health food! We have been fortunate to hold on to many old character buildings and I want to make sure that any future development is sympathetic to maintaining the character of the street. The beautiful jetties and wide beaches of Semaphore and Largs will always be a drawcard for the whole Council area. Although the recent storms damaged a lot of the sand dune system and coastal plantings, especially in the Semaphore South area, the Council has been active in climate change mitigation and coastal protection programs, and I will continue to work to strengthen these programs. Cr Michelle Hogan My favourite places in the Semaphore Ward are the beaches. I love the serenity and I enjoy walking with my grandchildren at all times of the year. I particularly love the continuous walking path from Outer Harbor to Semaphore South, with a raised portion from Taperoo to Largs Bay, which helps to protect our amazing dunes. This path is well used by families and sporting enthusiasts, either running, walking or biking. I have also chosen the beach at the Largs Bay Sailing Club because they are hosting 2 major Youth Regattas – the first from 2-9 January for Optimist's followed by the International Cadet Australian Championship Regatta from 11-19 January 2017. This will showcase this fantastic area and surrounding suburbs. Largs Bay beach, along with Semaphore, are where our newly trialled beach access mats will be positioned next summer. These mats will enable everyone from people with disabilities, to the young or old to access the sand and water if they choose to. The council is also undergoing community consultation in relation to new accessible adult changing room facilities for people with disabilities, to be placed in close proximity to the beach access mats.

Each story reveals a little more about the people who call this City home and how our community has lived over time. The challenge to tap into these stories provided an exciting opportunity for our community to learn the skills of story-telling to share ideas and inspire each other toward building an ongoing and sustainable story resource for both now and into the future. The ‘National Year of Reading’ encouraged Australia to focus on and to facilitate a love of reading and stories throughout the community prompting the local concept of the ‘Writers Workshop’ program. Here members of the Charles Sturt community fostered their writing skills with the assistance of local author Tom Mann to ‘Open the Door on Charles Sturt’ where stories of their lives and experiences in and around our community were uncovered and collected together forming this collection of short stories.
