T ZVI HERSH WEINREB , R ABBI EMERITUS RABBI BENJAMIN BAK President’s Message Dear Shomrei Family, Growth is in the air. Shul membership is growing . We continue to welcome new members, and I am excited to share that as of this month there are now over 600 member families/ units in the shul! We look forward to continued growth as one of the preeminent Family and Community Shuls in our region and the entire country. Shul learning and other programs are growing. Our growth in numbers is accompanied by growth in Torah study and other opportunities for member engagement. The seasonal Motzei Shabbos Kol Hanearim Learning Program , Monday Night Learning + Dougies Program for Middle School Boys , and Friday Night Learning + Chulent Program are off to a great start with large groups of participants choosing to spend the long winter nights in the Shul Beis Medrash. This week, a large group of the 55+ Friends of Shomrei enjoyed a get -together and talk with a fascinating speaker; Thank you to Hal and Vicky Caine for organizing! Shomrei Youth programs keep growing in terms of attendees and new opportunities for the youngest members of our shul family. Several of our youth groups have enjoyed special trips over the last month, with an upcoming girls Skyzone Trip and Shomrei Youth Chanukah Party around the corner; Thank you to our amazing new Youth Director Naomi Albert for all her great work! Next week, we look forward to a unique and fascinating Shabbos with our special guest Rabbi Tani Prero. Details for the upcoming Annual Shul Evening of Appreciation have been finalized as you see in the accompanying flyer . We will focus more on this event in upcoming weeks, but for now please mark your calendars for Motzei Shabbos February 17 th as a date when we will join together to celebrate the shul and give appreciation to several well-deserving honorees. Crime is growing. As you are already aware, a significant and horrific increase in crime is currently affecting our community. Our Shomrei Security Committee met recently and will continue to meet soon to consider and implement new security protocols and initiatives. If you are able to volunteer time or have ideas/input, please contact committee members Shmuel Tarshish (Chair), Kenny Friedman, Sasha Zakharin, Ezri Klein, and Ken Gelula. On the community level, Councilman Yitzy Shleifer, Shomrim, NWCP, the police departments, and dedicated groups of concerned residents continue to work around the clock to ensure and improve security. Thank you to our shul Security Committee members and the above named groups and individuals for selflessly going above and beyond in their efforts to keep the shul and community safe. Hinei Lo Yanum Vlo Yishan Shomrei Yisrael : We daven to HKB’H that the hishtadlus of these individuals should have immediate and lasting positive results, and that our community will have continued safety. Expenses are growing. More people in a huge building with more programs results in increased costs. After a thorough analysis of our shul finances, the Finance Committee has recommended, and the Board of Directors has approved, an increase in membership rates for the upcoming 2018 year. The new annual membership rates will be $640 for full members and $320 for Weekday Members. This increase will help to cover the significant expenses required to ensure that our shul continues to thrive. The good news accompanying this increase is an opportunity to remain at the old membership rate ($600/$300) for 2018 if this amount and all other past balances are paid in full before January 1, 2018. Please note that the long standing policy to not turn away any interested members based on financial need will continue. If anyone has questions or would like to discuss these developments further, please do not hesitate to discuss with me Please join the events below during a unique and uplifting Shabbos or any of the Executive Board or Finance Committee members. next week with our special guest!
