STUDY GUIDE ENTOMOLOGY & NEMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT DPM COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS The Entomology & Nematology Comprehensive Examinations consist of 3 sections: pest identification (30%), pest biology and management (40%), and core concepts and synthesis (30%). These examinations are limited to information about invertebrate animal pests, principally insects and nematodes, but also plant feeding mites and terrestrial molluscs. A. Pest identification Students will be presented with insects, mites, molluscs, and nematodes that they must identify. Some may be recognizable by sight, but others may require keys for identification. Students will be provided with identification aids (keys), where necessary, and be expected to use them to identify the subjects accurately. The unknowns will be selected from the list of important insect, mite, mollusc, and nematode pests (Table 1) though we will emphasize those with a single or double asterisk [* or **]), as these normally are the more important pests. Included in this list are some that pose a threat but are not currently found in Florida. B. Pest biology and management Students will answer 8-10 questions on insect, mite, mollusc, and nematode pest biology (sampling, distribution, life cycle, damage) and management. The animals for which students are responsible to know biology and management are listed in Table 1 (preceded by double asterisk [**]). C. Core Concepts and Synthesis Section: Students will answer 3 or 4 questions that cover core areas of Entomology/Nematology and demonstrate knowledge of core areas, but also analysis and problem solving. Suggested reference/reading material is listed in Table 2. You might want to read through these in preparation for the Comprehensive Examinations. -

1. Natural History of the Squid INTRODUCTION Cephalopods in general and squid in particular have been the subject of con- siderable curiosity everywhere that man has become acquainted with the sea. These fast-moving animals possess a number of features usually associated only with verte- brate forms and to practitioners of anthropomorphism they appear to have con- siderable cunning. Popular accounts of these animals are recurrent and only a few wil be mentioned to introduce the subject: Lane (1957) provided a comprehensive and readable coverage of cephalopods in a book slanted toward Octopus; Morton's (1958) introduction to mollusks sets the cephalopods among other members of the phylum; some invertebrate zoology tests, especially one by Russell-Hunter (1968), give good coverage of cephalopods; excellent photographic coverage can be found in articles by Voss and Sisson (1967 and 1971); and behavioral aspects of cephal- opods are summarized in a concise book by Wells (1962). Systematic position Cephalopods are relatively large, active, predaceous mollusks with a high level of nervous development. There are approximately 400 living species which are distributed throughout all marine environments. Fossils of shelled cephalopods are well known and abundant in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic; their direct descendants are almost entirely extinct today, having been replaced by shell-less cephalopods which did not leave a fossil record. Modern forms are subdivided into the Nautiloi- dea (including only the relict genus Nautilus) and the Coleoidea, encompassing the remaining dibranchiate species. The latter are composed of eight-armed forms (Octopoda) and ten-armed forms (Decapoda) which include the true squids (Teu- thoidea) and cuttlefishes (Sepioidea). -

Malcolm started doing research in the Azores from 1980s onward, settling for residency in 2000 after retirement (in 1987). He kept publishing on Azorean cephalopods collaborating in 20% of the peer reviewed works focus- ing on two main areas: dietary studies; and the ecology of cephalopods on seamounts. Since his first visit in 1981, he was involved in the description of the dietary ecology of several cetaceans, seabirds, and large pelagic and deep-water fish. Using his own data, Malcolm revised the association of cephalopods with seamounts, updating and enlarging the different cephalopod groups according to species behaviour and ecology. Malcolm taught several students working in the Azores on cephalopods and beak identification, lecturing the Third International Workshop in Faial (2007). -

Engel1,2, Victor H. Gonzalez3, & Claus Rasmussen4 Abstract. Recent phylogenetic analysis of the family Apidae has applied the tribal name Co- elioxoidini to the distinctive genus Coelioxoides Cresson, which has been thought to be related to Tetrapedia Klug. However, the nomenclatural status of such a family-group name has not yet been assessed. Herein, we determine that this family-group name is available and discuss its authorship and proposal date. INTRODUCTION The genus Coelioxoides Cresson includes four rather wasp-like cuckoo bees (Fig. 1) that has historically been considered a close relative of their hosts in the genus Tet- rapedia Klug (Roig-Alsina, 1990; Michener, 2007). More recently, the genus has been suggested to be related to other cleptoparasitic bees, and distant from Tetrapediini (Martins et al., 2018; Bossert et al., 2019), and each has employed the tribal name Co- elioxoidini to accommodate the genus. The availability of a family-group name based on the type genus Coelioxoides was questioned by Rocha-Filho et al. BtSHOJ' MOSEtrM INTRODUCTION The following report on crustaceans selected from materia1lwhich has accumulated in Bishop Museum for several years inc1uder (1), new species, (2) known species as new Hawaiian records, an,(i (3) known species rarely recorded in the central Pacific. Recently, valuable collections have been received as a result of the current dredging operations of the M alliin, a boat of the Fi hand Game Division, Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry. These collections clearly reveal the presence of a crustacean fauna a ut the Hawaiian Islands. at depths of about 10 fathoms and beyond, which is not seen on the shallow reefs. Many of the unique species taken nearly 50 years ago by the Albatross of the United States Fis Com~ mission have again been brought to view. Other rare crustaceans recorded in the report were receive1 from the Honolulu Aquarium and came from fish traps operated b~ com mercial fishermen off the coast of Oahu at depths ranging aro~nd 16 fathoms. These specimens show that fauna at these depths har close affinities with that of the western Pacific and the Indian Ocej. It is well known that many organisms, both land and marine ~orrns, have been introduced into the Hawaiian area within recent I.years, chiefly as a result of war activities. Ocean-going craft returning to Hawaii from forward areas in the Pacific transport on theil' hulls marine organisms not previously recognized among local shore fauna, and some of these inunigrants become established in the new e9viron ment. -

Three main approaches to delineation of species boundaries (intuitive, conceptual, and operational) are discussed, with remarks on their practical usage in freshwater malacology. The central topic of the article is how malacologists changed their views on the essence of species category and the impact of these changes on the taxonomic practice. The opinions of some prominent and prolific workers in the field (Bourguignat, Kobelt, Hubendick, Starobogatov) are analysed as well as the debates around the theoretical foundations and practical results of the ‘Nouvelle École’ of the 19th century and the ‘comparatory’ systematics of the 20th century. -
