NOTE: I have just received in the post an envelope addressed to the Epacris Study Group, posted from Hobart on May Znd, 2010. Unfortunately the envelope was slit along the bottom and was totally empty. There was no information regarding the sender, but ifyou have sent such a letter in recent days, please let me know, and perhaps cancel any cheque sent. Fortunately all turned out well in the end, as the next morning an Epacris Study Group renewal form was delivered with a $5 note stapled to the corner. Our very nice Post Office manager advised that it had been found on the floor of the district sorting office. He went on to explain that many of today's envelopes have a very effective self-sealing strip and if there is any air left in the envelope when the seal is fastened envelopes can 'pop' at the bottom as they go through the rollers of the sorting machines. This is certainly something I had not personally considered previously, but I felt it is very useful information for us all to be aware of. All of my letters will be squashed down firmly in future to avoid this potential problem. -

The purpose and scope of the document This document is the culmination of over 10 years investigation into the proposed importation of a European bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, into Australia in managed hives for pollination purposes. While originally use in a wide range of field and greenhouse crops was envisaged, the proposal has been narrowed down to pollination of greenhouse crops, particularly tomatoes, in fully enclosed structures. -

Since the 1980s, A. cerana has been introduced to areas outside its natural range (namely New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Australia), which sparked fears that it may become a pest species that could compete with, and negatively affect, native Australian fauna and flora, as well as commercially kept A. mellifera and commercial crops. This literature review is a response to these concerns and reviews what is known about the ecology and behaviour of A. cerana. Differences between temperate and tropical strains of A. cerana are reviewed, as are A. cerana pollination, competition between A. cerana and A. mellifera, and the impact and control strategies of introduced A. cerana, with a particular focus on gaps of current knowledge. We employ a transect setting, controlling for both forage and nest location, to assess the foraging distance of Bombus terrestris workers and the influence of environmental factors on foraging frequency over distance. The mean foraging distance of B. terrestris workers was 267.2 m ± 180.3 m (max. 800 m). Nearly 40% of the workers foraged within 100 m around the nest. B. terrestris workers have thus rather moderate foraging ranges if rewarding forage is available within vicinity of the nests. We found the spatial distribution and the quality of forage plots to be the major determinants for the bees foraging decision-making, explaining over 80% of the foraging frequency. Karen A. Johnson iii iv Abstract Relationships between plants and their pollinators are thought to have played a major role in the morphological diversification of angiosperms. The epacrids (subfamily Styphelioideae) comprise more than 550 species of woody plants ranging from small prostrate shrubs to temperate rainforest emergents. Their range extends from SE Asia through Oceania to Tierra del Fuego with their highest diversity in Australia. The overall aim of the thesis is to determine the relationships between epacrid floral features and potential pollinators, and assess the evolutionary status of any pollination syndromes. The main hypotheses were that flower characteristics relate to pollinators in predictable ways; and that there is convergent evolution in the development of pollination syndromes. -

Volume : 4 | Issue : 3 | Mar 2015 ISSN - 2250-1991 Research Paper Medical Science Comparative Performance of Apis Mellifera and Apis Cerana Under Punjab Conditions JASVIR SINGH DALIO Street No. 12, Yog Nagar BUDHLADA-151502 (PUNJAB) Study conducted on relative performance of Apis mellifera and A. cerana under Punjab conditions, revealed that as far as honey collection, pollen load, egg laying capacity, sustainability under adverse conditions (dearth period), ability to regain strength after deteriorating environmental conditions etc. were concerned, A. mellifera was the best performer as compared to other species. Phenomena of absconding and swarming was more in case of A. cerana while absconding was not observed and swarming was easily controllable in case of A. mellifera. Thus Italian honeybees were more suitable and ABSTRACT beneficial as compared to A. cerana. KEYWORDS Apis mellifera, Apis cerana, swarming, absconding, foraging behaviour of honeybees. Bumblebee in the UK
There are 24 species of bumblebee in the UK. This field guide contains illustrations and descriptions of the eight most common species. All illustrations 1.5x actual size. There has been a marked decline in the diversity and abundance of wild bees across Europe in recent decades.
