    Gleaston Castle, Gleaston, Cumbria Results of Aerial Survey and Conservation Statement Helen Evans and Daniel Elsworth April 2016 Gleaston Castle: Aerial Survey and Conservation Statement 1 Summary Gleaston Castle is located on the Furness Peninsula, South Cumbria and is a fortified manor in the form of a courtyard or enclosure castle. The site, now ruinous, originally consisted of a large hall and three towers joined by a substantial curtain wall. The castle may have been constructed in the early 14th Century when Cumbria was subject to raids from Scotland under Robert the Bruce, although there is not necessarily any direct connection to these events, especially given that it is not mentioned in documentary sources before 1350. After a relatively short period as a manorial residence the site was abandoned in the mid-15th Century and recorded as a ruin in the mid-16th Century. Despite the attentions of antiquarians, the history and remains of Gleaston Castle are poorly understood. It has never been fully recorded and required a detailed archaeological survey to better understand its significance and inform future conservation strategies. Elements of the ruinous remains of the castle are in a dangerous structural condition requiring extensive repair and consolidation to make them safe. For this reason the site, immediately adjacent to a public road, is not publically accessible. Gleaston Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade 1 listed building. Presently there is no coherent management structure in place or funds available for its conservation. Although the castle has significant historical, archaeological and tourism potential, the present complexities of its situation have led to a lack of intervention.

  • A History of Allithwaite
    A History of Allithwaite. This short history pulls together pieces of research and information on the village of Allithwaite but will hopefully lead to more in depth research in the future. Allithwaite lies to the north of Morecambe Bay, south of the historic village of Cartmel and en route from Grange-over-Sands to Flookburgh. No river flows through the village but springs perculate through the limestone on which the village is built with a beck running out from the rock at the lowest point of the village and these water sources will have encouraged early settlements. The village is built on the lower slope of a hill called Templand. Earlier histories talk about the outlying areas such as Templand and Birkby, Applebury and Outerthwaite, Rosthwaite and Wraysholme but very little about the village itself and the growth of the village can be documented after the building of the church and school in 1865 and more dramatically in the 20th century. Early history Artefacts (stone blades) from Kirkhead cave on the southern outskirts of the village date to approximately 11000 to10000BC. The cave is one of the most northerly recorded Palaeolithic sites in the country (Lindale Low being the other site). Most recently, at the start of the 21st century, Bronze Age remains from between 1500-1000 BC have been found in the centre of the village. From this period into the Iron Age, archaeologists state there is a lack of settlement evidence in the area. Kirkhead may have played an important part in local history as it has been suggested by more than one historian that this was the place where the first chapel in the Cartmel area was built.

  • Prehistoric Finds from Slackwood Farm, Silverdale
    PREHISTORIC FINDS FROM SLACKWOOD FARM, SILVERDALE Daniel W Elsworth and Dot Boughton Abstract This paper reports on two prehistoric artefacts unexpectedly found during archaeological work carried out at Slackwood Farm, Silverdale, Lancashire. Introduction Between 2009 and 2013 Greenlane Archaeology carried out various pieces of archaeological work in advance of, and as part of, renovation and conversion work of the buildings on Slackwood Farm (Greenlane Archaeology 2009a; 2009b; 2011; 2013). The farm is situated on New Road approximately 1km south-east of the centre of Silverdale (SD 47444 74589). The house is Grade II* Listed and considered to date to the late 17th century. As such it is a rare example of a very early, double-pile plan house (double pile means that it is two rooms deep and two rooms wide; see Brunskill 1988; 53–56). However, the documentary evidence and investigative works, which included dendrochronological dating, demonstrated that it is more likely to date from the early 18th century, most probably 1713 (Nottingham Tree-Ring Dating Laboratory 2012). Archaeological discoveries made during work carried out by Greenlane Archaeology and some of the dated timbers do, however, show that there was also a medieval presence on the site, although its earliest recorded reference is from only 1632. Prehistoric Discoveries The final phase of archaeological work comprised an archaeological watching brief carried out primarily during the excavation of footings for a new extension, but also during excavation internally on the ground floor in order to install under-floor heating. There was also monitoring of parts of the building where wall coverings were removed and apertures unblocked.

(Lancashire Parish Clerk online) Another Thomas Ormandy, aged 43 from Wigan, was buried at Aldingham on 4 May 1852. Some relation surely? From a brief look on Ancestry, it appears that all male Ormandy’s were called Thomas or William.

    University of Sheffield Prehistoric Landscapes of Cumbria Irene Helen Evans Volume II Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts Department of Archaeology July 2005 Chapter 8: Burial and depositional traditions Introduction Discussions in previous chapters have established some of the ways monuments related to how people moved around and understood the landscapes in which their lives played out. Seasonal journeys between landscape zones became increasingly marked by monuments into the Early Bronze Age. Drawing on aspects of the natural world, and formalising and embellishing places that had seen earlier use, monuments tied into the maintenance of social identity and tenurial ties. But how do their contents relate to their settings? Burial and other sorts of depositional practice have seen limited discussion in previous chapters as they were common practice at different 'types' (and scales) of monument. In this chapter, the focus is on the character of deposition itself and exploration of the relationships between people, monuments and the natural world. As with other elements of the prehistoric record in Cumbria, there is no synthetic account or interpretation of burial and depositional practice. This chapter sets out the evidence, and discusses how it articulates with the themes established in earlier chapters. The frrst section outlines the character of the evidence, and problems with the ways it has been interpreted in the past. This is followed by a discussion of Neolithic funerary practice, leading to a reassessment of the 'single grave' burial traditions of the Neolithic-Bronze Age transition. The third section concerns funerary and depositional practice into the Bronze Age.

It was against this benign background that the Federation enjoyed a most successful Convention in very comfortable circumstances at Newbiggin: a good crowd to listen to four excellent presentations on different aspects of Cumbrian history. The quality of work underway is impressive. Also, at the AGM, in addition to agreement to modest increases in our subscription rates our proposed new Constitution was endorsed unanimously and we will now apply for charitable status which, if successful, promises to put our finances on a firmer footing. The new arrangements cater for a phased turnover in Committee membership and the first elections will take place at next year’s AGM. The support you give to your local societies is invaluable: but why not consider a stint at the centre of the Federation? Our efforts to assist the Cumbrian Archive Service have begun to bear fruit.
