Initially, I thought that this gravestone was commemorating Rev. Thomas Ormandy, Curate at for many years. The earliest date for him that I found was 22 Jan 1826; the last 27 Dec 1848. (Lancashire Parish Clerk online)

Another Thomas Ormandy, aged 43 from Wigan, was buried at Aldingham on 4 May 1852. Some relation surely?

From a brief look on Ancestry, it appears that all male Ormandy’s were called Thomas or William. For example, a search for Thomas born 1760 produced: born 1750 produced Thomas Ormandy Baptism 27/09/1760 Lowick Baptism 18/08/1751 Dalton Death 07/1858 Birth 1752; Death abt 1824 Death 04/1855 Liverpool Baptism 11/06/1749 Broughton-in- Death 04/1859 Wigan Death 04/1855 Liverpool Death 07/1858 Ulverston Death 04/1852 Ulverston Death 04/1852 Ulverston There are plenty of Ormandy families listed in Dalton, Ulverston, Wigan and Liverpool.

There are also plenty of references to Ormandy’s in the Archive Service catalogue (CASCAT), both at Barrow and Whitehaven, showing connections with the Schollick family (see Schollick page), and links with Broughton in Furness.

I found a brief entry for Thomas Ormandy marrying Dorothy Bolton in Lancashire on 26 June 1785. This gave me a link to a marriage bond dated 23 July 1785 but wrongly listed under Armandy (sic) whereby “Thomas Ormandy of the Parish of Aldingham, Husbandman, and William Boulton of the Parish of Dalton, Husbandman, both in the County of Lancaster”, enter into an agreement whereby “Thomas Ormandy aforesaid, Husbandman, and Dorothy Boulton of Aldingham in the Archdeanery of Richmond, spinster” get married. Lancashire Parish clerk online records the marriage as 26 JUNE 1785, and spells Dorothy’s surname as Bolton.

Back in Ancestry Dorothy Boulton had been baptised in Dalton on 19 April 1760.

Another Thomas Ormandy baptised 4 AND 11 Jan 1795 (both dates appear on Ancestry) at Urswick; parents William and Mary, who may be the William & Mary on the gravestone.

I found Ann Ormandy on the 1851 Census living at Skells Lodge, Urswick, where the household consisted of Joseph Ormandy (60), Head, born Aldingham, Farmer of 47 acres; Ann Ormandy (64), Sister, Houskeeper (sic), born Aldingham; Thomas Ormandy (18), Nephew, Farm Servant, born Liverpool; Thomas Watson (42), Widower, General Farm Servant, born Broughton; Ann Wilkinson (15), Servant; born Penington (sic).
