ABSTRACT Rachel Jeannine Watkins: To Know the Brethren: A Biocultural Analysis of the W. Montague Cobb Skeletal Collection (Under the direction of Carole L. Crumley) This dissertation examines the health consequences of poverty among African Americans living in Washington, D.C. during the late 19*'’ and early 20*'’ century. A biocultural framework informed by political economy and ecological anthropology is used to understand cultural, environmental and biological interrelationships in their specific and broad contexts. Research focuses on the impact of poor relief policies, migration, racial discrimination and the Great Depression on the District’s local environment and the health of its residents. The W. Montague Cobb skeletal collection includes the remains of Black Washington, D.C. residents who lived in the city almshouse as well as individuals who lived in District neighborhoods. A sample of skeletons from each group is the focus of this analysis. Methodologies include a critical analysis of documentary social data, a survey of known causes of death and macroscopic observation of skeletal remains for lesions associated with unskilled labor. Two skeletal samples fi-om the Robert J. Terry collection are used to compare data from the Cobb samples with African American remains of similar socioeconomic and temporal context. This study reveals biological outcomes of African Americans’ extremely limited access to public assistance, housing and labor in the District. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. institutionalized populations, the incidence of trauma and death from infectious disease was lower among almshouse residents than individuals living in the general population. Conditions in the almshouse did not facilitate ‘healthier’ residents than non-residents. Rather, these results indicate the gradient of poverty among African Americans represented in the Cobb collection. Individuals in the Terry sample presented moderate and severe marginal joint lipping at an earlier age, while cartilage loss in joints occurred earlier in the Cobb samples. Different expressions of activity stress and infectious disease within and between samples reflect the impact of local environments on human biology. This analysis contributes to research on the biological consequences of poverty and African American biohistory. The biocultural framework used in this study includes a detailed social and historical contextualization of health and disease patterns. As a result, it is possible to identify how smaller units within communities are affected differently by local conditions. IV Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST RESEARCH ARTICLE The Bioarchaeology of Structural Violence and Dissection in the 19th-Century United States Kenneth C. Nystrom ABSTRACT Structural violence is harm done to individuals or groups through the normalization of social inequalities in political-economic organization. Researchers working in both modern and prehistoric contexts focus on the lived experiences of individuals and the health disparities that arise from such violence. With this article, I seek to contribute to this literature by considering how skeletal evidence of dissection from the 19th-century United States reflects structural violence. I focus on “death experiences” and suggest that studies of structural violence must consider not only how inequality may be embodied as health disparities in the living but also “disembodiment” and the treatment and fate of the dead body. INTRODUCTION he narrative of African Americans’ quest for racial equality T and social justice in the twentieth century is typically construed in the context of main-line civil rights organizations— NAACP, SCLC, SNCC, and the like. However, for decades, black fraternal networks helped lay the groundwork for the major civil rights campaigns that culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.1 Much of this history emerged from the efforts of the predecessors to black Greek-letter collegiate organizations—black secret societies. Wingate Todd's role in the development of modern American physical anthropology \\as considerably more complex and profound than historians have previously recognized. A factor of the idiosyncrasies of his life and research. this relative neglect of Todd is symptomatic of a larger underappreciation of the field' s professional and intellectual development in the early twentieth century. A complete examination of Todd's life reveals that he played a crucial role in the discipline's evolution. On a scholarly le\·el. his peers recognized him as one of the most important men in the field and rarely challenged his yoluminous \Yj'itten output. which comprised a significant portion of the period's literature. On a theoretical leveL Todd led nearly all of his contemporaries in the eventual turn the field made away from the ethnic focus of its racialist roots and the biological determinism of the eugenics movement. Furthermore. he anticipated the profound theoretical and methodological changes that eventually put physical anthropology on its present scientific footing. His research collections are the largest of their kind in the world, and still quite actiYely used by contemporary researchers. Many of Todd' s publications from as early as the 1920s (especially those concerning age changes. grO\\th. and development) are still considered standard works in a field that changed dramatically after his death.

    RACHEL J. WATKINS Essays Knowledge from the Margins: W. Montague Cobb’s Pioneering Research in Biocultural Anthropology ABSTRACT W. Montague Cobb became the first African American to receive a doctorate in physical anthropology in the United States (1932). He was also among the first U.S. physical anthropologists to demonstrate a commitment to biocultural integration and racial equality in his research. Nonetheless, very few European American physical anthropologists responded to or utilized Cobb’s work. This continued after bioanthropology took on a more biocultural focus in the 1980s, some 50 years after Cobb’s first studies of this kind. In this essay, I highlight Cobb’s research and writing from the first decades of his career to illustrate his contribution to developing biocultural perspectives in physical anthropology. As a result, I hope to move Cobb from the margins to the center of discussions about methodological and theoretical developments in bioanthropology over the past 30 years. [Keywords: W. Given the continuity and intergenerational transmission of knowledge evident in African expressions of culture, these olden naturalistic health techniques, throughout time, have continuously been used as therapeutic modalities by posterior African cultures—both continental and Diasporic. Due to its tripartite approach to healing—of mind, body and spirit— this age-old African healing tradition has gained popularity in contemporary times and is commonly known today as the locution: holistic health. The principal objective of this intellectual project is to reveal an unbroken genealogy of a thriving Africana holistic health tradition upheld by both advocates and practitioners in the field. Notwithstanding the current state of health of Africans residing in the United States, the praxis of these ancient healing customs is extant within communities which the population is predominately African.
