Milwaukee, WI May 2013 ABSTRACT TOWARD A RENEWED THEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK OF CATHOLIC RACIAL JUSTICE: A VISION INSPIRED BY THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF DR. ARTHUR GRAND PRÉ FALLS Lincoln Rice Marquette University, 2013 Catholic theological thought in the field of racial justice has evolved considerably during the 20 th century—and even more so over the past twenty years. I analyze changes in Catholic racial justice concerning the use of black Catholic sources and the role for African American Catholics in working toward a more racially just society. In order to properly critique and augment more recent developments in the field of Catholic racial justice, this work retrieves the life and writings of Dr. Arthur Grand Pré Falls (1901- 2000), a black Catholic medical doctor who worked ceaselessly for racial justice within the Catholic, political, educational, medical, and residential institutions of the Chicago area. The life and writings of Falls confirm that black historical retrieval and a role for African Americans in racial justice projects (or black agency) are prerequisites for the success of any Catholic racial justice project. Chapter one delineates the use of African American sources and black agency within the work of American Catholic theologians, United States Bishops’ documents, and Vatican documents during the 20 th and early 21 st centuries. Chapter two outlines the life of Arthur Falls—his family and educational background, his work and positions within the Chicago Urban League, the Federated Colored Catholics, the Chicago Catholic Worker, as well as his focused assaults on segregation in the housing and medical fields in his later life. Chapter three examines the writings of Falls in the field of theology and race relations. His writings provide insight into the fluid relationship that he entertained between contemporary theological thought and the suffering caused by racism in Chicago. Chapter four integrates the life and writings of Falls with the insights of current Catholic theological reflection on the social sciences, racial justice, and modes of action for addressing racism. This final chapter exhibits the efficacy of Falls as a resource for Catholic racial justice projects and the necessity of organized and authentically interracial collaboration if one hopes to achieve lasting positive results. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, I would like to thank Arthur Grand Pré Falls. The passion and vigor behind his life and writings has been an inspiration for me that I have yet to fully internalize. The decades of his life that he dedicated to racial justice were always a source of reinvigoration in getting back to work on this project. Falls’s own unique vision of the Catholic Worker movement pushes me to rethink my own understanding and incorporation of the vision of Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin in my own life. PROVIDENCE AND HISTORIES: AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PERSPECTIVE OF BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY Introduction Black theology as a particular perspective and method in the field of theology is a relatively new phenomenon which has roots in the religious history of the slave ancestors of today's African-Americans.1 Black theology, like most theology, is essentially an attempt to understand the meaning and purpose of human life in the context of a community which believes in God. Black theologies, though diverse, all seek to understand the meaning and pur- pose of Black humanity in the context of a society which is inimical and oppres- sive to its existence. Recent news report would suggests that assertions that African- Americans are the victims of systemic genocide may not be too radical. The infant mortality rate of African-American babies in major United States cities is equal to that of some third world countries; the life expectancy of Blacks decreased in the last six months; suicide rates have increased; the major threat to life for Black males between the ages of 22 and 45 is murder; Black males and females experience a higher rate of incarceration in prisons; deaths by aids and drugs is steadily increas- ing; etc. The development "life statistics" have complex histories but the envi- ronmental stresses of high unemployment, homelessness, miseducation, poor medical care, general poverty, and racism are contributing factors. These condi- tions have a systemic origin and require systemic solutions. John W. Fleming suggests that in its initial stages of development, Black the- ology was united in its goal but diverse in its response in addressing the reality of the "color-caste system" and oppression which characterize the social reality of African-Americans.

The Complex Relationship between Jews and African Americans in the Context of the Civil Rights Movement Abstract The Civil Rights Movement occurred throughout a substantial portion of the twentieth century, dedicated to fighting for equal rights for African Americans through various forms of activism. The movement had a profound impact on a number of different communities in the United States and around the world as demonstrated by the continued international attention marked by recent iterations of the Black Lives Matter and ‘Never Again’ movements. One community that had a complex reaction to the movement, played a major role within it, and was impacted by it was the American Jewish community. The African American community and the Jewish community were bonded by a similar exclusion from mainstream American society and a historic empathetic connection that would carry on into the mid-20th century; however, beginning in the late 1960s, the partnership between the groups eventually faced challenges and began to dissolve, only to resurface again in the twenty-first century.

    AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST RESEARCH ARTICLE The Bioarchaeology of Structural Violence and Dissection in the 19th-Century United States Kenneth C. Nystrom ABSTRACT Structural violence is harm done to individuals or groups through the normalization of social inequalities in political-economic organization. Researchers working in both modern and prehistoric contexts focus on the lived experiences of individuals and the health disparities that arise from such violence. With this article, I seek to contribute to this literature by considering how skeletal evidence of dissection from the 19th-century United States reflects structural violence. I focus on “death experiences” and suggest that studies of structural violence must consider not only how inequality may be embodied as health disparities in the living but also “disembodiment” and the treatment and fate of the dead body. The diminishing number means many more parishes will be without a resident pastor, and some parishes will no longer have a priest available to them at all. The trend makes it more likely that new models of ministry will need to be launched to maintain Catholic faith communities throughout the country. It is likely more and more responsibility for the growth of such churches will rest with lay leaders. This study looks at the problem through the lens of Change Theory with the methodology of Action Research. This report examines the effects of the priest shortage trends on St. Anthony Parish in Madisonville, and the efforts to define the best ministerial and administrative structure for its lay people to position the parish within a Pastoral Region in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. For the U.S. Church to survive the laity must begin to take on roles that priests once held. There is a new vigor for the laity, particularly women, to assume stronger roles in the parishes.
