Vial Degree Date: June 2018 ABSTRACT The emergence of James Cone’s black liberation theology in the late-1960s and early 1970s marked both a radical challenge to and a historical transformation of the fields of religious and theological studies. Building on Cone’s work, black theological discourse has developed a rich tradition of religious and academic inquiry characterized by its commitment to interpreting Christianity in particular, and religious experience more broadly, from the vantage point of oppressed black people. This dissertation shows that James Cone developed a particular understanding of black identity in his early works and, furthermore, that various scholars have critically engaged this conception of black identity in both explicit and implicit ways. I argue that retaining and developing black theology’s commitment to the lived experiences of oppressed black people requires clarifying the meaning of black identity in light of the complex socio-economic realities that characterize black life in the 21st-century. Borrowing from the work of Latin American theologian Orlando Espìn, this dissertation identifies and interprets outstanding examples of critical engagement with Cone’s coneption of blackness as moments of “traditioning.” Traditioning marks the ongoing and inevitable process of contesting and reshaping theological realities. This dissertation, then, analyzes the ongoing contestation and reshaping—traditioning—of black identity in black theological discourse. Through this analysis, this dissertation seeks to maintain and develop black theology’s ii revolutionary commitment to the oppressed by refracting this commitment through the lens of the historic socio-economic stratification that characterizes black life in the 21st century. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The labor of this dissertation was supported by so many wonderful people; I will only be able to name some of them here. I was in San Diego for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) when Barack Obama, the first black President of the United States of America, addressed the grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Wilson in Brown’s killing. President Obama was solemn and measured, conducting himself with the respectable poise that characterized so much of his presidency. Reflecting a strong understanding of how ideologically divided the nation is, President Obama noted that the grand jury’s decision would have been controversial either way. And then, with the eyes of the country and the world fixed on him, the first black President spoke words that I will likely never forget: “First and foremost, we are a nation built on the rule of law.”1 I was crushed. I do not know what I was expecting the President to say on that day. I do not think I held any clear expectations; my mental and emotional capacities were still finding the way through the deep, dull but all too familiar pain of having been 1 “President

PROVIDENCE AND HISTORIES: AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PERSPECTIVE OF BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY Introduction Black theology as a particular perspective and method in the field of theology is a relatively new phenomenon which has roots in the religious history of the slave ancestors of today's African-Americans.1 Black theology, like most theology, is essentially an attempt to understand the meaning and purpose of human life in the context of a community which believes in God. Black theologies, though diverse, all seek to understand the meaning and pur- pose of Black humanity in the context of a society which is inimical and oppres- sive to its existence. Recent news report would suggests that assertions that African- Americans are the victims of systemic genocide may not be too radical. The infant mortality rate of African-American babies in major United States cities is equal to that of some third world countries; the life expectancy of Blacks decreased in the last six months; suicide rates have increased; the major threat to life for Black males between the ages of 22 and 45 is murder; Black males and females experience a higher rate of incarceration in prisons; deaths by aids and drugs is steadily increas- ing; etc. The development "life statistics" have complex histories but the envi- ronmental stresses of high unemployment, homelessness, miseducation, poor medical care, general poverty, and racism are contributing factors. These condi- tions have a systemic origin and require systemic solutions. John W. Fleming suggests that in its initial stages of development, Black the- ology was united in its goal but diverse in its response in addressing the reality of the "color-caste system" and oppression which characterize the social reality of African-Americans.

  • Development of Womanist Theology: Some Chief Characteristics
    DEVELOPMENT OF WOMANIST THEOLOGY: SOME CHIEF CHARACTERISTICS RUFUS BURROW, }R. INTRODUCTION Womanist theology is the most creative development and has been the most sig- nificant contribution to black theology and black religious scholarship since its emer- gence in the mid- I 980s.' Proponents of this new way of thinking about and doing theology are primarily Afrikan-American women who have put black religion on trial' in a way heretofore unknown. Although influenced by both black theology and feminist theology, womanist theology is not a mere constellation of ideas from these camps. Instead, Womanists have focused first and foremost on their own experience and voice as they continue to clarify just what they mean to say and do as theologians whose reality is multidimensional. That is, they are women, Afrikan American, who believe they are frequently adversely affected by classism, colorism, and heterosexism. This essay focuses on three things. First, I discuss contributions of the folklorist, anthropologist, and novelist Zora Neale Hurston to womanist theology and ethics. Second, attention is given the reasons black women religious scholars were initially critical of their male counterparts, and why they now prefer womanist theology as the best way of describing their work. Third, I discuss six important characteristics of womanist theology and ethics. I conclude with a consideration of several limitations or concerns about the womanist theological project. The hope is that these will soon come to center stage in womanist theology and ethics. Indeed, in light of the seri- ousness of the genocidal tendency reflected in intracommunity violence and murder among large numbers of young Afrikan-American males, they must.

    James H. Cone: Father Of Contemporary Black Theology RUFUS BURROW, JR. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to provide pastors, laypersons, students and aca- demicians with a sense of the human being behind and in the thick of black lib- eration theology as well as his courage to both lead and change. I shall briefly discuss aspects of James Hal Cone's background, some early frustrations and challenges he confronted, and ways in which his theology has shifted. Since the late 1960s, Cone has been among the most creative and courageous of the contemporary black liberation theologians. Although he has been writing major theologi"tal treatises since 1968, there has been no booklength manuscript published on his work. There have, however, been a number of dissertations written on his theology since 1974, some of which are comparative studies. Cone has been the subject of much criticism by white theologians, although few of them have taken either him or the black religious experience seriously enough to be willing to devote the time and energy necessary to learn all they can about these in order to engage in intelligent dialogue and criticism. Considered the premier black theologian and the "father of contemporary black theology," it is strange that after more than twenty years of writing, lectur- ing on and doing black theology, no one has yet devoted a book to Cone's work.' To be sure, Cone's is not the only version of black liberation theology. However, it was he who introduced this new way of doing theology in a systematic way.

The Complex Relationship between Jews and African Americans in the Context of the Civil Rights Movement Abstract The Civil Rights Movement occurred throughout a substantial portion of the twentieth century, dedicated to fighting for equal rights for African Americans through various forms of activism. The movement had a profound impact on a number of different communities in the United States and around the world as demonstrated by the continued international attention marked by recent iterations of the Black Lives Matter and ‘Never Again’ movements. One community that had a complex reaction to the movement, played a major role within it, and was impacted by it was the American Jewish community. The African American community and the Jewish community were bonded by a similar exclusion from mainstream American society and a historic empathetic connection that would carry on into the mid-20th century; however, beginning in the late 1960s, the partnership between the groups eventually faced challenges and began to dissolve, only to resurface again in the twenty-first century.

An Episcopal priest and lifelong athlete, Dorrien is the author of 17 books and approximately 275 articles that range across the fields of ethics, social theory, theology, philosophy, politics, and history. Philosopher Cornel West describes him as “the preeminent social ethicist in North America today,” and philosopher Robert Neville describes him as “the most rigorous theological historian of our time.” Dorrien’s book, The New Abolition: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Black Social Gospel, earned Dorrien the 2017 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, jointly with the University of Louisville, awards the $100,000 prize to honor and publicize creative and significant insights into the relationship between human beings and the divine. Dorrien’s other acclaimed publications focus on economic democracy, social ethical theory, and American politics. His book Social Ethics in the Making, a comprehensive interpretation of social ethics as an academic field and a tradition of public discourse, won the Choice Award as the outstanding book in ethics of 2009. More recently, Dorrien published a critique of Barack Obama’s presidency titled The Obama Question: A Progressive Perspective and lectured extensively on this topic.     Black theology and a legacy of oppression M. Shawn Copeland June 24, 2014 For white people living in the United States, the entanglement of Christianity with chattel slavery and antiblack racism forms a set of deep and confusing paradoxes. As a nation, we understand ourselves in terms of freedom, but we have been unable to grapple with our depriving blacks of freedom in the name of white prosperity and with our tolerance of legalized racial segregation and discrimination. As a nation, we have been shaped by racism, habituated to its presence, indifferent to its lethal capacity to inflict lingering human damage. Too often, Christians not only failed to defy slavery and condemn tolerance of racism; they supported it and benefited from these evils and ignored the very Gospel they had pledged to preach. Not surprisingly, 11 a.m. on Sunday morning remains the most segregated hour in Christian America, yet most white Christian theologians have given little attention to slavery or racism. In the wake of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the black liberation theologian James H. Cone denounced the lukewarm responses of mainline Protestant and Catholic Christians to the plight of black Americans as well as the willful blindness of Christian theologians. He declared racism to be America’s original sin and proposed the concept of black theology. 1 When confronted with this unseemly history, many Catholics argue the “immigrant thesis,” which dates the bulk of Catholic European immigration from the 19th century, thereby exempting Catholics from earlier slaveholding and active participation in racism.
