Development of Womanist Theology: Some Chief Characteristics
DEVELOPMENT OF WOMANIST THEOLOGY: SOME CHIEF CHARACTERISTICS RUFUS BURROW, }R. INTRODUCTION Womanist theology is the most creative development and has been the most sig- nificant contribution to black theology and black religious scholarship since its emer- gence in the mid- I 980s.' Proponents of this new way of thinking about and doing theology are primarily Afrikan-American women who have put black religion on trial' in a way heretofore unknown. Although influenced by both black theology and feminist theology, womanist theology is not a mere constellation of ideas from these camps. Instead, Womanists have focused first and foremost on their own experience and voice as they continue to clarify just what they mean to say and do as theologians whose reality is multidimensional. That is, they are women, Afrikan American, who believe they are frequently adversely affected by classism, colorism, and heterosexism. This essay focuses on three things. First, I discuss contributions of the folklorist, anthropologist, and novelist Zora Neale Hurston to womanist theology and ethics. Second, attention is given the reasons black women religious scholars were initially critical of their male counterparts, and why they now prefer womanist theology as the best way of describing their work. Third, I discuss six important characteristics of womanist theology and ethics. I conclude with a consideration of several limitations or concerns about the womanist theological project. The hope is that these will soon come to center stage in womanist theology and ethics. Indeed, in light of the seri- ousness of the genocidal tendency reflected in intracommunity violence and murder among large numbers of young Afrikan-American males, they must. -

James H. Cone: Father Of Contemporary Black Theology RUFUS BURROW, JR. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to provide pastors, laypersons, students and aca- demicians with a sense of the human being behind and in the thick of black lib- eration theology as well as his courage to both lead and change. I shall briefly discuss aspects of James Hal Cone's background, some early frustrations and challenges he confronted, and ways in which his theology has shifted. Since the late 1960s, Cone has been among the most creative and courageous of the contemporary black liberation theologians. Although he has been writing major theologi"tal treatises since 1968, there has been no booklength manuscript published on his work. There have, however, been a number of dissertations written on his theology since 1974, some of which are comparative studies. Cone has been the subject of much criticism by white theologians, although few of them have taken either him or the black religious experience seriously enough to be willing to devote the time and energy necessary to learn all they can about these in order to engage in intelligent dialogue and criticism. Considered the premier black theologian and the "father of contemporary black theology," it is strange that after more than twenty years of writing, lectur- ing on and doing black theology, no one has yet devoted a book to Cone's work.' To be sure, Cone's is not the only version of black liberation theology. However, it was he who introduced this new way of doing theology in a systematic way. -

Attending Catholic school at an early age, Grant then moved on to public schools, graduating from Howard High School in 1966. From there, she attended Bennett College, the Turner Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned her Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in earned her Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Grant became involved with the Women's Studies Program at the Harvard Divinity School within the Women's Research Program in 1977. Her involvement there led to the creation of the Women's Studies in Religion Program, and she remained there until 1979. Grant founded the Center for Black Women in Church and Society at the Interdenominational Theological Center in 1981, where she continues to serve as director and professor. As a practicing minister, Grant has served as the assistant minister at Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1980 to 1982. She is presently the assistant minister at the Victory African Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta. A successful author, Grant has written or edited several books, including White Women's Christ and Black Women's Jesus: Feminist Christology and Womanist Response, the all-time best selling book released by Scholars Press, and her most recent book, Perspectives on Womanist Theology. -

Current Theology Feminist Theology: a Review of Literature
Theological Studies 56 (1995) CURRENT THEOLOGY FEMINIST THEOLOGY: A REVIEW OF LITERATURE INTRODUCTION* According to Sandra Schneiders's useful definition, feminism is a comprehensive ideology, rooted in women's experience of sexual op pression, which engages in a critique of patriarchy, embraces an al ternative vision for humanity and the earth, and actively seeks to bring this vision to realization.1 Feminist theology may be considered that part of this quest for justice which is concerned with critical anal ysis and liberating retrieval of the meaning of religious traditions. In the roughly 35 years of its existence, contemporary feminist theology has produced a vast, international body of literature that ranges across all of the theological specialties and beyond. The notes that follow revisit several salient themes and debates in the area of systematic theology, although no hard and fast division obtains between this dis cipline and feminist ethics and biblical hermeneutics.2 The current intellectual ferment first came to expression in Valerie Saiving (Goldstein)'s now-classic 1960 article, 'The Human Situation: A Feminine View," in which she raised the question of the applicabil ity of prevailing theological statements to all human beings. Her own suggestion, that teachings about sin as pride or will-to-power and about redemption as negation of self or self-giving love might look very different from the perspective of women's experience, struck a deep chord.3 Since then, virtually every aspect of inherited theology has been scrutinized for the ways in which its context has shaped its con tent, the two being inextricably linked. -

Womanist Theology
Womanist Theology EMILIE M. TOWNES WOMANIST THEOLOGY is a form of reflection that places the religious and moral perspectives of Black women at the center of its method. Issues of class, gender (including sex, sexism, sexuality, and sexual exploitation), and race are seen as theological problems. Womanist theology takes old (traditional) religious language and symbols and gives them new (more diverse and complex) meaning. This form of theological reflection cannot be termed "womanist" simply because the subject is Black women's reli gious experiences. The key for womanist theology is the use of an inter- structured analysis employing class, gender, and race. This kind of analysis is both descriptive (an analysis and sociohistorical perspective of Black life and Black religious worldviews) and prescriptive (offering sug gestions for the eradication of oppression in the lives of African Ameri cans and, by extension, the rest of humanity and creation). A key feature of womanist theology is its evolving character. From its formal beginning in 1985 with the publication of Katie Geneva Cannon's article, "The Emergence of Black Feminist Consciousness," (Katie's Canon, 47-56), it has developed in the following ways: an orientation to Black women's survival in an oppressive social order that is classisi, racist, and sexist; a framework for interpreting and critiquing the role of the Black Church; an interrogation of and critique of the Black Churches' appropria tion of scripture in oppressive ways; a model for Black women's organiza tional strength; a critique of Black social stratification; advocacy for justice-based spirituality; the inclusion of ecological concerns; a concern for health care; a consideration of Black sexuality; and the issue of work.
