James H. Cone: Father Of Contemporary Black Theology RUFUS BURROW, JR. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to provide pastors, laypersons, students and aca- demicians with a sense of the human being behind and in the thick of black lib- eration theology as well as his courage to both lead and change. I shall briefly discuss aspects of James Hal Cone's background, some early frustrations and challenges he confronted, and ways in which his theology has shifted. Since the late 1960s, Cone has been among the most creative and courageous of the contemporary black liberation theologians. Although he has been writing major theologi"tal treatises since 1968, there has been no booklength manuscript published on his work. There have, however, been a number of dissertations written on his theology since 1974, some of which are comparative studies. Cone has been the subject of much criticism by white theologians, although few of them have taken either him or the black religious experience seriously enough to be willing to devote the time and energy necessary to learn all they can about these in order to engage in intelligent dialogue and criticism. Considered the premier black theologian and the "father of contemporary black theology," it is strange that after more than twenty years of writing, lectur- ing on and doing black theology, no one has yet devoted a book to Cone's work.' To be sure, Cone's is not the only version of black liberation theology. However, it was he who introduced this new way of doing theology in a systematic way. -

The Black community of Atlanta is one of the most progressive in the nation with abundant commercial establishments, industries, and professional ser¬ vices. The churches of the city with their social service programs, the welfare agencies, hospitals, and penological institutions all provide a laboratory for the student preparing for the Christian ministry. Atlanta is easily accessible by all forms of transportation and is the hub of Georgia’s Interstate highway system. Its airport is one of the busiest in the nation. 7 INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATIONS Atlanta is a major educational center. Six institutions of higher learning in the city are federated in the Atlanta University Center: Atlanta University, Clark College, the I.T.C., Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and Spelman College. The Atlanta University Center Corporation has greatly increased cooperation between the schools and is providing expanded educational opportunities in which the I.T.C. shares. The I.T.C. maintains close cooperation with the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, and Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Caro¬ lina. Students in any one of these schools may take courses in the other without extra cost. Arrangements to take courses on this exchange basis must be made with the Vice President for Academic Affairs in the I.T.C. Without new theological language, we are likely to be hesitant, reluctant, or unable to speak about the divinity we struggle with, reject, call upon in times of need, or experience in daily life. Yet ideas about the sacred are one of the ways we orient ourselves in the world, express the values we consider most important, and envision the kind of world we would like to bring into being. -

Jones Email Address: [email protected] COURSE INFORMATION Course Semester: Spring 2018 Three (3) Semester hours Prerequisites: None COURSE DESCRIPTION Drawing from the Black idiomatic expression “you actin’ womanish,”1 novelist Alice Walker in her collection of essays, In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose (1983) penned the term “womanist” in efforts to name the distinctive political aims of Black women beyond a white feminist scope in the 1980s. From Walker’s four-part poetic framing, womanism birthed in religious studies as a critical approach to take seriously the lived experiences of Black women against multiple forces of oppression. This course engages the theoretical contributions of womanist scholarship of the 20th and 21st centuries to the discipline(s) of theology and ethics. The course explores womanist thought as a theo-ethical enterprise for dismantling multidimensional oppression at the critical crossways of identity and difference. Utilizing the core tenets of womanist theological ethics, students will interrogate the moral virtue(s) of the body, human flourishing, ecology, faith, love, justice, hope, and redemption. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES 1) To introduce the interreligious, spiritual, political, theological, and ethical dimensions of a womanist sacred worldview. 2) To mine the motherlode of primary womanist theological and ethical contributions from the 1980s to the present. 3) To investigate and employ research methods for constructive womanist theology and ethics including literary analysis, sociology of Black liberation, Black women's historiography, and Black popular culture. 4) To interpret, articulate, and construct original theo-ethical positions resource womanist theology and ethics. -

Attending Catholic school at an early age, Grant then moved on to public schools, graduating from Howard High School in 1966. From there, she attended Bennett College, the Turner Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned her Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in earned her Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Grant became involved with the Women's Studies Program at the Harvard Divinity School within the Women's Research Program in 1977. Her involvement there led to the creation of the Women's Studies in Religion Program, and she remained there until 1979. Grant founded the Center for Black Women in Church and Society at the Interdenominational Theological Center in 1981, where she continues to serve as director and professor. As a practicing minister, Grant has served as the assistant minister at Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1980 to 1982. She is presently the assistant minister at the Victory African Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta. A successful author, Grant has written or edited several books, including White Women's Christ and Black Women's Jesus: Feminist Christology and Womanist Response, the all-time best selling book released by Scholars Press, and her most recent book, Perspectives on Womanist Theology. -

Course Overview This course introduces the ecofeminist and ecowomanist movements of the late twentieth century to the present day, looking specifically at how they have influenced constructive theology. The course examines ecofeminism’s claim patriarchal institutions and “other worldly” concepts of the divine mutually reinforce one another, maintaining a hierarchical worldview that subjugates both women and nature. After analyzing works at the intersection of ecofeminism and theological studies, the course proceeds with perspectives from diverse social locations, including various geographical and religious contexts. The course concludes with an introduction to non-binary gender theory and the challenges it poses to ecofeminism. Assigned reading, websites & videos will all be posted on Bb Course Material & Bb Streaming Video.
