Many people have impacted my life and thoughts throughout my life journey. Today, I am the result of these cross-cultural encounters. As a Brazilian living in South Africa for the past fourteen years I can say that this road of divergence and convergence of thought is part of my essence. To write a PhD thesis in another language that is not your own, is a challenge that only those who have been through the same experience can fully understand. The inability to express your thoughts at the level and fluency that you wish can drive one at times to a point of desperation, and this was no different for me. Still, I often would find myself analysing the reasons that propelled me to pursue this project in a different language and country. One among many other reasons is that I like challenges and I like to be among people who have a different culture from mine. I enjoy the diversity and the cross-cultural experience. I understand that this reality has forced me to grow out of my comfort zone and learn and re-learn things that I would not otherwise have learned. I would like to acknowledge all the people that have contributed to this project, indirectly and directly. However, I am afraid the number of pages would overcome the ones of this project itself. For this reason I will mention a few that currently compose this kaleidoscope that has been my academic journey. First I would like to say thank you to my father, Walter Nogueira Faria, a man who became a widower very young and who raised three girls in the best way he could. Among many things, he taught me through his own life experiences that there will always an alternative in the middle of struggle. Thank you for being persistent through the most difficult times of our lives. I also want to say thank you to my stepmother, Eny Nogueira, who chose to be my mother. Your decision to be part of our lives has taught me more than words could describe about love and care. I would like to acknowledge Natalia and Lucas Nogueira, the most brilliant and loving children a parent could ever wish for. viii THE ECOFEMINISM OF IVONE GEBARA Elaine Nogueira-Godsey 10.11.2013 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the intellectual trajectory of the Brazilian feminist liberation theologian Ivone Gebara. Gebara’s development and conceptualisation of the notion of ‘immediacy’ from a feminist perspective not only constitutes a central and critical feature of her theology, but also emerges as a key component in forging increased dialogue and cooperation between Southern and Northern ecofeminists. The immediate context of oppression experienced by poor Latin American women is the ground upon which Gebara has built her critique of patriarchal and apolitical Christian theological discourses, as well as capitalist ideologies. These multiple forms of oppression, Gebara argues, render women’s experiences of marginalisation invisible or hidden within socio-cultural and economic-political immediate realities. This thesis proposes that the immediate reality of oppression lead Gebara to develop a specific methodological approach that is responsive to the experiences of women in particular. Gebara’s praxis-orientated methodology also functions as a compass for the development of a political ecofeminist praxis. As Ivone Gebara’s work demonstrates, the political aspect of theology can be injected into the core of emerging ecotheologies. In the process, ecofeminist theologians can work to bridge the gap between theory and praxis.

INTRODUCTION Womanist theology is the most creative development and has been the most sig- nificant contribution to black theology and black religious scholarship since its emer- gence in the mid- I 980s.' Proponents of this new way of thinking about and doing theology are primarily Afrikan-American women who have put black religion on trial' in a way heretofore unknown. Although influenced by both black theology and feminist theology, womanist theology is not a mere constellation of ideas from these camps. Instead, Womanists have focused first and foremost on their own experience and voice as they continue to clarify just what they mean to say and do as theologians whose reality is multidimensional. That is, they are women, Afrikan American, who believe they are frequently adversely affected by classism, colorism, and heterosexism. This essay focuses on three things. First, I discuss contributions of the folklorist, anthropologist, and novelist Zora Neale Hurston to womanist theology and ethics. Second, attention is given the reasons black women religious scholars were initially critical of their male counterparts, and why they now prefer womanist theology as the best way of describing their work. Third, I discuss six important characteristics of womanist theology and ethics. I conclude with a consideration of several limitations or concerns about the womanist theological project. The hope is that these will soon come to center stage in womanist theology and ethics. In this commentary, I point out serious issues in neoev- olutionist models and phylogenetic models assumed in Crow-Omaha and Dziebel’s arguments. I summarize the widely-shared objections (in case Kin term scholars have not previously paid atten- tion) and how those apply to Kin terminology. Trautmann (2012:48) expresses a hope that Kinship analysis will Join with archaeology (and primatology). Dziebel misinterprets archaeology as lin- guistics and population genetics. Although neither Crow-Omaha nor Dziebel (2021) make use of archaeology, biological anthropology, or paleogenetics, I include a brief overview of recent ap- proaches to prehistoric Kinship in those fields—some of which consider Crow-Omaha—to point out how these fields’ interpretations are independent of ethnological evolutionary models, how their data should not be used, and what those areas do need from experts on kinship. My argument will present how applying transgender as an analytical category to vegetarian eco-feminisms, can be contributive in expanding ethical and political solidarity within feminist projects, which apply gender identity politics to their conceptualizations and argumentations. I will outline the potential to transcend usages of gender identity politics upon a cisnormative canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms lead by Carol J. Adams’ The Sexual Politics of Meat (1990). Adams’s canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms appropriates diet as a central resource of their political projects, which contest speciesism and cis-sexism. Like Adams’ canon, my analysis will consider diet as always having political connotations and implications, both for individuals and their embodiments, within broader socio-political realms. Alongside diet, transgender as an analytical category will be employed within analysis, due to its potential of exposing how genders as social categories and constructs are re-formed. My analysis will be based on narrative interviews, which will explore the multi-directional ethical and political implications of meat non-consumption and cisgender non-conformity among members of Berlin’s transgender / cisgender non-conforming and meat non-consuming subcultures.

The aN ture of Identity: Ecofeminism, Women's Poetry, and Reclaiming Power through the Recognition of Parallel Oppressions Abstract The presence of Ecofeminism in women's poetry can empower women today who engage in feminist activism. The systematic oppression experienced by women is paralleled by the destruction inflicted upon nature (including animals). By recognizing these as similar, women can reclaim their connection to nature (while rejecting the idea that this is essentialist); through this connection women as readers find na escape from patriarchy, the male gaze, and sexual violence in Ecofeminist poetry.
