  • The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe
B AR B ARA C HING Happily Ever After in the Marketplace: The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe Between 1882 and 1898, Harvard English Professor Francis J. Child published The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, a five volume col- lection of ballad lyrics that he believed to pre-date the printing press. While ballad collections had been published before, the scope and pur- ported antiquity of Child’s project captured the public imagination; within a decade, folklorists and amateur folk song collectors excitedly reported finding versions of the ballads in the Appalachians. Many enthused about the ‘purity’ of their discoveries – due to the supposed isolation of the British immigrants from the corrupting influences of modernization. When Englishman Cecil Sharp visited the mountains in search of English ballads, he described the people he encountered as “just English peasant folk [who] do not seem to me to have taken on any distinctive American traits” (cited in Whisnant 116). Even during the mid-century folk revival, Kentuckian Jean Thomas, founder of the American Folk Song Festival, wrote in the liner notes to a 1960 Folk- ways album featuring highlights from the festival that at the close of the Elizabethan era, English, Scotch, and Scotch Irish wearied of the tyranny of their kings and spurred by undaunted courage and love of inde- pendence they braved the perils of uncharted seas to seek freedom in a new world. Some tarried in the colonies but the braver, bolder, more venturesome of spirit pressed deep into the Appalachians bringing with them – hope in their hearts, song on their lips – the song their Anglo-Saxon forbears had gathered from the wander- ing minstrels of Shakespeare’s time.

POINT OF VIEW: EXAMINING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY STANDARD A Thesis presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School at the University of Missouri In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by CRISTINA DAGLAS John Fennell, Thesis Supervisor MAY 2009 © Copyright by Cristina Daglas 2009 All Rights Reserved The undersigned, appointed by the dean of the Graduate School, have examined the thesis entitled POINT OF VIEW : EXAMINING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY STANDARD presented by Cristina Daglas, a candidate for the degree of master of arts, and hereby certify that, in their opinion, it is worthy of acceptance. Professor John Fennell Professor Jennifer Rowe Professor Amanda Hinnant Professor Maureen Stanton ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am immensely grateful to my thesis chair, John Fennell, who believed in both the necessity for and the feasibility of this research. When many doubted the ability to interview prominent magazine professionals, John provided support and guidance while always keeping setbacks and successes in perspective. John has been a mentor from first semester of graduate school when I enrolled in his writing course, and I am so pleased that I could pursue a topic I am incredibly passionate about with his guidance. However, this research would naturally not be what it is without the rest of my fabulous committee. Jennifer Rowe, my other mentor, adviser and friend, was an invaluable resource, as she provided big-picture edits, line edits and, most importantly, support. Amanda Hinnant provided advice in the earliest days of thesis conception as well as the scholarly perspective necessary in any academic work. Maureen Stanton was also a wonderful resource, imparting an outside, nonfiction mindset that added another dimension to this journalistic thesis.

The first Beatles song to include a reference to getting “high” (“I get high when I see you go by”). The working title prior to lyrics being written was “That’s a Nice Hat.” George Martin and his Orchestra recorded the instrumental version of “It’s Only Love” using the original title. In 1972 Lennon called “It’s Only Love” “the one song I really hate of mine.” On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP 2 3 The Beatles - Love Me Do – Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: John and Paul The Beatles’ first single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Released October 5, 1962, it reached #17 on the British charts. Principally written by Paul McCartney in 1958 and 1959. Recorded with three different drummers: Pete Best (June 6, 1962, EMI audition), Ringo Starr (September 4, 1962), and Andy White (September 11, 1962 with Ringo playing tambourine). The 45 rpm single lists the songwriters as Lennon-McCartney. One of several Beatles songs Paul McCartney owns with Yoko Ono. Starting with the songs recorded for their debut album on February 11, 1963, Lennon and McCartney’s output was attached to their Northern Songs publishing company. Because their first single was released before John and Paul had contracted with a music publisher, EMI assigned it to their own, a company called Ardmore and Beechwood, which took the two songs “Love Me Do” and “P.S.

  • A Reflexive Music Therapy Clinical Introspection in Working with Foster Care Youth
INVITED SUBMISSION - SPECIAL ISSUE | PEER REVIEWED A Reflexive Music Therapy Clinical Introspection in Working with Foster Care Youth Michael L. Zanders 1 *, Melanie Midach 2 , Lindy Waldemeier 1 , Brittney Barros 3 1 Texas Woman's University, United States 2 Music that Reclaims, United States, 3 Eastern Michigan University, United States *[email protected] Received: 1 June 2018 Accepted: 1 September 2018 Published: 1 November 2018 Editors: Susan Hadley, Rebecca Fairchild Reviewer: Kirsi Tuomi Abstract It is a challenge to write about the experiences of individuals in music therapy, while also honoring their experiences as co-participants of the process. There is also a challenge and struggle to research and write about child welfare populations as the therapist is many times the “voice” of the youth. As there is an imbalance in therapy at times, there is an imbalance in the youth’s experiences, not only in music thera- py but in their everyday lives. This article is a clinical introspection to the research, theory, and practice in working with youth who have experienced foster care and/or adoption. Although not specifically a research study, elements to this introspection will include foundations of both heuristic inquiry and reflexive phenomenology. This special issue on child welfare promotes the idea of understanding the re- sources that youth need, providing a space for music therapists and youth to have a voice, and collaboration between those who have involvement in the child welfare system. It would then seem essential to promote the critical thought of music therapy students who have encountered the child welfare system as it relates to foster care and adoption.

  • Simon Stow in 2017, the BET Hip-Hop Awards Opened with A
Brolly. Journal of Social Sciences 2 (2) 2019 ON THE EXISTENTIAL POLITICS OF HIP-HOP (OR, THE CONCEPT OF IRONY WITH CONTINUAL REFERENCE TO EMINEM) Simon Stow John Marshall Professor of Government and American Studies The College of William and Mary, USA [email protected] Abstract. Hip-hop has long been considered political: as Chuck D. famously observed “rap music is the CNN of the ghetto”. Moving beyond clearly political themes, slogans, and acts of alterity at the heart of Hip-Hop, this essay employs the work of the rap-artist Eminem to draw out and identify a further way in which those of us engaged in political analysis might productively conceive of the genre as being political. Drawing upon the European and American existentialist traditions, this essay suggests that the artist’s irony, hyperbole, and theatricality are constituents of a political worldview that recognizes both the need for self- creation and the pressure, social, political, and artistic, that make this quest for self-creation both an endless struggle and an opportunity for a vivified care of the self. The aim here is not to seek to valorise the rap genre by suggesting that it might offer insight into the political, but rather to point to the ways in which the cultural analysis of politics, and the political analysis of culture, might move beyond the rote by paying attention to the ethical, political, artistic, and philosophical nuances of the object of study. Keywords: Eminem, hip-hop, rap music, existentialism, irony, theatricality, authenticity, misogyny, homophobia, politics In 2017, the BET Hip-Hop Awards opened with a freestyle performance by the rap-artist Eminem – a.k.a.
