J. “Sam” Uhl resided in Rockport, Texas at the time he gave his photograph collection to Mr. E. E. Dunsworth in 1999. According to Mr. Dunsworth, Mr. Uhl collected model airplanes and enjoyed photography. Some of the pictures in the collection are stamped with the name Uhl Parachute Service indicating that he may have operated a parachute service at one time, but according to Mr. Dunsworth, Mr. Uhl was not a pilot. J. “Sam” Uhl Aviation Photograph Collection is arranged as a single series alphabetically by manufacturer with most of the aircraft identified. Scope and Content The collection is composed of photographs and negatives that include images of both military and civilian aircraft. The images span from WWI through WWII. Provenance Statement The A. J. “Sam” Uhl Aviation Photograph Collection was given to Mr. E. E. Dunsworth in 1999 by Mr. Uhl. In 2004, Mr. Dunnsworth donated the collection to The History of Aviation Collection, Special Collections Department, McDermott Library, The University of Texas at Dallas. Note to the Researcher Folders are represented by alphabetical index cards. The folder number is written in pencil next to the letter printed on the card. First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.)
