  • Chapter 2: Pop-Rock of the 50S and 60S
The Development of Rock & Roll by Dr. Daniel Jacobson © 2016 All Rights Reserved CHAPTER 2 POP-ROCK OF THE 50S AND 60S INTRODUCTION Softer “pop” music styles have played important roles in the development of rock, especially from c1953 to 1966 and in the early 70s. Various pop-related styles in the 50s and early 60s include: • Doo-Wop (1950s and early ‘60s; combined Pop, Gospel and soft R & B elements) • Teen Idol “Crooners” (late ‘50s/early ‘60s; Dick Clark early rock era; soft R & B) • Surf Music (late ‘50s/early ‘60s) • Brill Building/Aldon Music (‘60s pop; extension of “Tin Pan Alley” tradition) • Early Motown (early 1960s; “Soul-pop” music) I. THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD IN 50s ROCK During the years 1957 to 1961, Rock & Roll lost the impact of at least ten of its most prominent trendsetters. • March 1956: While on his way to perform for The Perry Como Show in New York City, Carl Perkins was involved in a car crash in which he suffered a fractured shoulder and skull. Perkins lost his chance for major fame, and was soon overshadowed by the rise of Elvis Presley. • October 1957: Little Richard renounced Rock and Roll for the ministry of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. • November 1957: Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13-year-old third cousin (while “forgetting” to divorce his first wife.) The scandal that followed destroyed his career. • March 1958: Elvis Presley was drafted into the army, serving in Germany until 1960. • February 1959: a small-plane crash near Fargo, North Dakota killed Buddy Holly, J.P.

The years between 1957 and 1965 can be considered the "dark age" of rock'n'roll. Many thought that rock'n'roll had simply died, an ephemeral, short- lived fad like many others. The wild, lascivious, insolent rocker was quickly replaced by a generation of polite, well-dressed, romantic "teen-idols" that ruled the airwaves till 1965. Paul Anka's Diana (1957), Pat Boone's Love Letters In The Sand (1957), Bobby Darin's Dream Lover (1959), Frankie Avalon's Why (1959), Fabian (Forte)'s I'm a Man (1959), Bobby Rydell's Wild One (1960), Rick Nelson's Hello Mary Lou (1961), Bobby Vee (Velline)'s Take Good Care Of My Baby (1961), and Neil Sedaka's Breaking Up Is Hard To Do (1962), and, among the girls, Brenda "Lee" Tarpley's I'm Sorry (1960), Connie "Francis" Franconero's My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own (1960) and Leslie Gore's It's My Party (1962), were emblematic. At best, rock'n'roll was fused with country music to yield a more "traditional" (and white) form of music for young people, as was the case with the Everly Brothers' Bye Bye Love (1957) and All I Have To Do Is Dream (1958), written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant.

Contact: Caitlyn Baker [email protected] (805) 944-7780 (c) (805) 350-7913 (o) DICK FOX’S ‘GOLDEN BOYS’ TO PERFORM AT CHUMASH CASINO RESORT SANTA YNEZ, CA – April 18, 2019 – Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell, three of the most popular teen idols from the late 1950s and ‘60s, have been united by producer Dick Fox and are bringing their U.S. tour to the Chumash Casino Resort’s Samala Showroom at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019. Tickets for the show are $39, $49, $59, $64 and $69. This showcase spotlights each of the performers and their all-time greatest hits, such as Fabian’s “Turn Me Loose,” “Tiger” and “I'm A Man,” Frankie Avalon’s “Venus,” “De De Dinah” and “Bobby Sox to Stockings,” and Bobby Rydell’s “Volare,” “Wild One” and “Kissin' Time.” The three stars combine their talents on several songs and perform a tribute to the material of Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Rick Nelson and Bill Hailey. Baby Boomers do a lot of reminiscing when Frankie Avalon takes the stage. He made the transition from “Teen-age Idol” to a mature professional with a career that now spans three generations of music, television and motion pictures. Fabian Forte was discovered at the young age of 14 sitting on his front steps in Philadelphia. His successful career produced multiple hit singles, eight albums and gold certifications for tracks “Turn Me Loose” and “Tiger” and for album “The Fabulous Fabian.” Bobby Rydell made his debut in the late ‘50s as a rock and roll teen idol starring in films such as “Bye Bye Birdie” and plays such as “West Side Story.” He was a semi- regular on the “Red Skelton Show” and “American Bandstand.” His recording career earned him 34 Top 40 records, putting him in the top 5 of all single artists from his era.

Amazon Studios, Magnolia Pictures, & Low Mind Films In Association with Better Wide Present GIMME DANGER A Film by Jim Jarmusch Running time: 108 min Official Selection 2016 Cannes Film Festival – World Premiere 2016 Toronto International Film Festival 2016 New York Film Festival FINAL PRESS NOTES Distributed in Canada by Films We Like Bookings and inquires: [email protected] SYNOPSIS Emerging from Ann Arbor Michigan amidst a countercultural revolution, The Stooges’ powerful and aggressive style of rock-n-roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s. Assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B, and free jazz, the band planted the seeds for what would be called punk and alternative rock in the decades that followed. Jim Jarmusch’s new film GIMME DANGER chronicles the story of The Stooges, one of the greatest rock- n-roll bands of all time. GIMME DANGER presents the context of the Stooges emergence musically, culturally, politically, historically, and relates their adventures and misadventures while charting their inspirations and the reasons behind their initial commercial challenges, as well as their long-lasting legacy. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT – JIM JARMUSCH No other band in rock’n’roll history has rivaled The Stooges’ combination of heavy primal throb, spiked psychedelia, blues-a-billy grind, complete with succinct angst-ridden lyrics, and a snarling, preening leopard of a front man who somehow embodies Nijinsky, Bruce Lee, Harpo Marx, and Arthur Rimbaud. There is no precedent for The Stooges, while those inspired by them are now legion. GIMME DANGER is more an 'essay' than a document.

GOLDEN OLDIES Veteran agent Arslanian, erstwhile stars find business model amid nostalgia Los Angeles Business Journal 20 Aug 2018 By MATTHEW BLAKE Staff Reporter RINGO H.W. CHIU/LABJArslanian: Discovered niche when Fabian filled in for Siegfried & Roy. Elvis Presley’s induction into the U.S. Army in 1958 spurred a search for rock n’ rollers who could provide a facsimile of the King – or at least have sufficient looks, voices and charisma to serve as teen idols for the surging rock audience. Enter South Philadelphia crooners Fabian Forte, Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell, who started singing love songs someone else wrote to swooning, screaming fans on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. The Beatles and other British invasion bands came along a few years later, explained Hollywood-based music manager Oscar Arslanian, and “these guys got kind of shoved to the side.” Their years in the wilderness stretched until the late 1970s, when Fabian, Avalon, Rydell and a few other Baby Boomer rockers were rediscovered, laying the groundwork for a second act that’s going on 40 years. They’re regularly selling out palladiums, amphitheaters and casinos throughout Southern California and the world, belting out their hits from 60 years ago. Arslanian Page 2 of 3 A number of the septuagenarian songsters make a living thanks in no small part to Arslanian, whose Arslanian & Associates developed a business model to cash in on the continued interest in rockn-roll’s first pop stars. It’s a niche business, left to entrepreneurs such as Arslanian and small to mid-sized venues such as the Greek Theatre, with capacity of 5,800, or smaller stages at Indian casinos.
