“The Twist”—Chubby Checker (1960) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Jim Dawson (guest post)* Chubby Checker Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” has the distinction of being the only non-seasonal American recording that reached the top of “Billboard’s” pop charts twice, separately. (Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” topped the holiday tree in 1942, 1945, and 1947). “The Twist” shot to No. 1 in 1960, fell completely off the charts, then returned over a year later like a brand new single and did it all over again. Even more remarkable was that Checker’s version was a nearly note-for- note, commissioned mimicry of the original “The Twist,” written and recorded in 1958 by R&B artist Hank Ballard and released as the B-side of a love ballad. Most remarkable of all, however, is that Chubby Checker set the whole world Twisting, from Harlem clubs to the White House to Buckingham Palace, and beyond. The Twist’s movements were so rudimentary that almost everyone, regardless of their level of coordination, could maneuver through it, usually without injuring or embarrassing themselves. Like so many rhythm and blues songs, “The Twist” had a busy pedigree going back decades. In 1912, black songwriter Perry Bradford wrote “Messin’ Around,” in which he gave instructions to a new dance called the Mess Around: “Put your hands on your hips and bend your back; stand in one spot nice and tight; and twist around with all your might.” The following year, black tunesmiths Chris Smith and Jim Burris wrote “Ballin’ the Jack” for “The Darktown Follies of 1913” at Harlem’s Lafayette Theatre, in which they elaborated on the Mess Around by telling dancers, “Twist around and twist around with all your might.” The song started a Ballin’ the Jack craze that, like nearly every new Harlem dance, moved downtown to the white ballrooms and then shimmied and shook across the country.

  • Issues of Gender in Muscle Beach Party (1964) Joan Ormrod, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by E-space: Manchester Metropolitan University's Research Repository Issues of Gender in Muscle Beach Party (1964) Joan Ormrod, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK Muscle Beach Party (1964) is the second in a series of seven films made by American International Pictures (AIP) based around a similar set of characters and set (by and large) on the beach. The Beach Party series, as it came to be known, rode on a wave of surfing fever amongst teenagers in the early 1960s. The films depicted the carefree and affluent lifestyle of a group of middle class, white Californian teenagers on vacation and are described by Granat as, "…California's beautiful people in a setting that attracted moviegoers. The films did not 'hold a mirror up to nature', yet they mirrored the glorification of California taking place in American culture." (Granat, 1999:191) The films were critically condemned. The New York Times critic, for instance, noted, "…almost the entire cast emerges as the dullest bunch of meatballs ever, with the old folks even sillier than the kids..." (McGee, 1984: 150) Despite their dismissal as mere froth, the Beach Party series may enable an identification of issues of concern in the wider American society of the early sixties. The Beach Party films are sequential, beginning with Beach Party (1963) advertised as a "musical comedy of summer, surfing and romance" (Beach Party Press Pack). Beach Party was so successful that AIP wasted no time in producing six further films; Muscle Beach Party (1964), Pajama Party (1964) Bikini Beach (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965) and The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966).

  • Bye Bye Birdie"
MEDIA CONTACT Natalie Kojen [email protected] April 6, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACADEMY TO PREMIERE NEW RESTORATION OF 1963 MUSICAL COMEDY "BYE BYE BIRDIE" BEVERLY HillS, CA - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will premiere a new digital restoration of "Bye Bye Birdie" on Wednesday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Hosted by film critic Stephen Farber, the evening will feature a Digital Cinema presentation with a newly restored 4- channel stereo soundtrack, followed by an onstage discussion with special guests Ann Margret and Bobby Rydell. Just five years after Elvis Presley was drafted into the army, the satirical "Bye Bye Birdie" had already been written, staged on Broadway, and turned into a film . When singing sensation Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) is drafted, songwriter Albert Peterson (Dick Van Dyke) and his girlfriend, Rosie Deleon (Janet leigh), arrange for Birdie to sing one of Peterson's songs in a farewell performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." To heighten the drama, the rock 'n' roll star is to give a goodbye kiss to a lucky young lady (Ann-Margret) from a small Ohio town - much to the dismay of her steady beau (Rydell) and parents (Paul Lynde and Mary LaRoche). Directed by George Sidney, this vibrant adaptation of the successful Broadway musical comedy earned Oscar" nominations for both Music and Sound, and features a range of songs, from the youthful "A lot of Livin' to Do" to the parentally angled "Kids. • Lou Christie & Bobby Rydell
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Alison Trovato 630.962.7000 | [email protected] April 2, 2018 1960s Teen Idols Bobby Rydell & Lou Christie Come to the Arcada St. Charles, IL: The Arcada Theatre is excited to welcome former teen icons and beloved entertainers Bobby Rydell and Lou Christie on Sunday, April 15 at 3pm. The co-bill brings two of the sixties most influential singers to the Historic stage, sharing classic songs such as "Wild One" and "Volare" as well as "The Gypsy Cried" and "Lightnin' Strikes." The evening will be an intimate, family-friendly rock 'n roll experience to remember. Bobby Rydell was first discovered in the late '50s as a teenage drummer sitting in on fellow-heartthrob Frankie Avalon's local band, Rocco and the Saints. At age 19 he was the youngest person to headline the famous Copacabana in New York and in 1963 starred alongside Ann-Margret in the iconic movie, "Bye Bye Birdie." The producers of Grease even named the high school "Rydell High" to pay tribute to Bobby's musical influence! Lou Christie's distinct falsetto and songwriting collaboration with the classically trained musician Twyla Herbert, thirty years his senior, has influenced artists including Elton John, Madonna, John Lennon and The Rolling Stones. His chart-topping hit "Rhapsody In The Rain" was the first song to be banned on the radio due to it's suggestive lyrics, with other highlights including his appearances on "Dick Clark's Caravan Of Stars," sharing 72 consecutive one-nighters with Diana Ross and the Supremes, and a command performance for Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family.

  • Interview with CHUBBY CHECKER Was Conducted by the Library of Congress on October 30, 2015
This interview with CHUBBY CHECKER was conducted by the Library of Congress on October 30, 2015 Chubby Checker LOC: Your version of “The Twist” followed a version by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Had you heard the earlier version before you were asked to record/perform it? CC: Yes, I heard “The Twist” by Hank Ballard and The Midnighters many times on the radio. I saw them perform the song at the Uptown Theater on Broad Street in Philadelphia. I was with my brother Tracy. LOC: If you hadn’t heard it before, I assume you have heard it since. What did you bring or try to bring to your version that isn’t in the earlier incarnation? CC: What I did to “The Twist” was a more upfront pop version with a back beat emphasizing more on the one and three rather than the two and four beats and the blues feeling that Hank Ballard & The Midnighters had on their version. LOC: While I doubt anyone could have predicted the stunning success and longevity of “The Twist,” at the time you recorded it, did you have a feeling that you had something special? CC: I asked my mother to pray to God and ask Him to give me a hit song and she said that she had a dream that I would record a song that would belong to someone else and it would cover the entire world. When I was asked to sing “The Twist,” I thought of what my mother had said. It's the only special feeling I got while recording [it].
