KEY MUSIC BOOKS YOU MUST READ This selection of books is divided into two categories – essential reading for anyone wanting to commit to a career in the music industry; and entertaining reads which are informative and enjoyable but are essentially geared at all music enthusiasts. ESSENTIAL READING FOR MUSIC STUDENTS “How music works” by David Byrne Chapter 7 of this book is entitled “Business and Finances (distribution and survival options for music artists)” and it is absolutely essential reading for any songwriter or musician. David Byrne of legendary rock group Talking Heads explains the detailed financial ins and outs of one of his album releases. He outlines the various costs involved and who gets the various percentages. He uses colour-coded diagrams to convey how the money pie is shared. At the same time, he describes the complex financial mechanisms of the modern music business. This is unmissable information. Few working musicians take the time to explain the money trail to newcomers who usually believe there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. What Byrne explains is how a musician who is willing to keep a lid on costs can make a modest living recording albums and touring. The rest of the book has a lot of interesting material, some of it a bit academic, some of it needing effort to persevere. But Byrne's enthusiasm for music usually carries you along. I liked the following bits in particular: Music as social glue, as a self- empowering social agent (pages 291-293); the value of music education (pages 295- 296); eight rules about how to create a music scene (pages 251-263); how recording technology is now incredibly accessible and cheap so there is no need for albums to be costly to record (pages 180-181); and the mp3 – poorer sound quality but maybe it is better to value convenience over sound (pages 124-126). -

Two thirds of them had come from the Commonwealth countries of the West Indies, India, Pakistan and Hong Kong, but one third had been born in the UK. The Commonwealth was the name given to the countries of the British Empire. However, as more and more countries became independent from the UK, the Commonwealth came to mean countries that had once been part of the Empire. Immigration was not new. By the 1940s there were already black communities in port cities like Bootle in Liverpool and Tiger Bay in Cardiff. Groups of Chinese people had come to live in the UK at the end of the 19th century and had settled in Limehouse in London, and in the Chinatown in Liverpool. Black West Indians had come to the UK to fight in the Second World War. The RAF had Jamaica and Trinidad squadrons and the Army had a West Indian regiment. As a result there were 30,000 non-white people in the UK by the end of the war.1 The British people had also been very welcoming to the 130,000 African-American troops of the US Army stationed in the UK during the war. -

The Working-Class and Post-War Britain in Pete Townshend's
Class, Youth, and Dirty Jobs: the working-class and post-war Britain in Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia This chapter examines Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia (1973) and the way in which it depicts continuity and change in the lives of the British working-class in the period that the album documents (1964/5), the political milieu in which it was written (1972/3), and the legacy of the concept that was depicted in the screen version directed by Franc Roddam (1978/9).1 Quadrophenia was recorded and released in a fraught period of industrial militancy in Britain that had not been witnessed since the general strike of 1926.2 The album can be ‘read’ as both a social history of an element of youth culture in the mid-1960s, but also a reflection on contemporary anxieties relating to youth, class, race, and national identity in the period 1972/3.3 Similarly, the cinematic version of Quadrophenia was conceived and directed in 1978/9 in the months prior to and after Margaret Thatcher was swept to power, ushering in a long period of Conservative politics that economically, socially, and culturally reshaped British society.4 Quadrophenia is a significant historical source for ‘reading’ these pivotal years and providing a sense of how musicians and writers were both reflecting and dramatizing a sense of ‘crisis’, ‘continuity’, and ‘change’ in working-class Britain.5 Along with the novels and films of the English ‘new wave’ and contemporary sociological examinations of working-class communities and youth culture, Quadrophenia represents a classic slice of ‘social realism’, social history, and political commentary. -
