Sexagesima Sunday comes roughly sixty days before Easter. Throughout this short Season and that of Lent you will notice a deepening sense of penance and somberness, culminating in Passiontide (the last two weeks of Lent), that will suddenly and joyously end at the Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday when the alleluia returns and Christ's Body is restored and glorified. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Know, Love, and Serve God throughout the Liturgical Year During Advent, Holy Communion prepared the faithful soul for the visible coming of Jesus in the flesh of the Divine Infant. This sublime gift was a foretaste of the happy night in which our Savior was to be born. At Christmas a little child was born unto us, cradled in Bethlehem, house of bread. The angels invited the shepherds and the star guided the Magi to come and adore the Lord. Holy Mass invites the faithful to a deeper knowledge of the Incarnate Word. During Ordinary Time, Holy Communion illumines the faithful with brighter light and produces an ardent longing to possess Jesus whose love gleams magnificently through His humility. It is no longer the invisible Jesus preparing by silence to conquer our souls; it is the visible Jesus, the God-Man, who has begun to walk the way of the cross. It is the Son of Justice darting His first rays on earth. It is God asking the faithful to make room in their hearts for Him to enter and love and be loved. During this season of Ordinary Time, let the faithful come to know Jesus that they may love Him, love Him that they may grow with Him. What Christ demands of faith by the mystery of life is that all become, like Him, little children for there is no other means of possessing Christ, no other way of going to the Father, than to come to Holy Communion with open and loving hearts.
