Workshop on the Earthquake

When an earthquake occurred off the coast of Padang on September 30, 2009, landslides and slope collapse occurred subsequently at various spots in the mountain areas. As a result, many access roads were cut off, thus created significant amount of time to grasp the damage situation in the affected areas. As a means of reference for disaster prevention in the future, we have taken a satellite image (with range of approximately 1,500 km2) with the focus on Padang and Agam Regencies, which were the hardest hit areas, to capture the slope collapse occurrence as a result of the quake. Based on the reading of the satellite image, it is evident that slope collapse has occurred in a total of 253 spots. We learned that an estimated 70,000,000 m3 of earth and sand has collapsed, while large-scaled landslide and slope collapse of more than 1,000,000 m3 occurred in 10 spots. In an effort to prevent future damages from land-related disaster, we plan to hold a workshop on the Padang earthquake with the purpose of dissemination the result of our study with the related personnel in the national, provincial, and levels as follows:
