Its beauty is the result of many centuries of human influence on the countryside and the daily interaction of people with nature. The history of these outstanding landscapes is fundamental to its present‐day appearance and to the importance which society accords it. If these essential qualities are to be retained in the future, as the countryside continues to evolve, it is vital that the heritage of the AONB is understood and valued by those charged with its care and management, and is enjoyed and celebrated by local communities. The North Wessex Downs is an ancient landscape. The archaeology is immensely rich, with many of its monuments ranking among the most impressive in Europe. However, the past is etched in every facet of the landscape – in the fields and woods, tracks and lanes, villages and hamlets – and plays a major part in defining its present‐day character. Despite the importance of individual archaeological and historic sites, the complex story of the North Wessex Downs cannot be fully appreciated without a complementary awareness of the character of the wider historic landscape, its time depth and settlement evolution. This wider character can be broken down into its constituent parts.

    White Horse Hill Geoglyph & hillfort Signposts to Prehistory Location: ‘White Horse’ Hill (SU 301 866) is in Oxfordshire (historically Berkshire), 2.5 km south of the village of Uffington. The hill forms a part of the scarp of the Berkshire Downs and overlooks the Vale of White Horse. Main period: Bronze Age–Iron Age Access & ownership: The site is managed by the National Trust on behalf of English Heritage and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Whitehorse Hill is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is signposted from the A420 Swindon to Oxford road, and lies next to the B4507 between Ashbury and Wantage. Parking is available but is subject to a charge for non-members (see National Trust website for details). There is also a small viewing point below the Horse on Dragon Hill road, with parking for six blue badge holders only. Uffington Hill is a site of enduring significance. This complex of prehistoric remains (Fig. 1) is set in the striking natural landscape of the chalk downlands, and includes an Iron Age hillfort (Uffington Castle) and the well-known figure of the White Horse. Other features include a Neolithic long barrow and a Bronze Age round barrow, reused in the Roman and Saxon periods respectively. An enclosure and ring ditch lie to the SW of the hillfort and linear ditches across the landscape are thought to represent Bronze Age land Fig. 1. The White Horse Hill landscape from the air. Earth One of Britain’s oldest known routes, the prehistoric Ridgeway, is deflected around the southern side of the hillfort that was probably deliberately sited to control movement along it.

    The Uffington White Horse geoglyph as sun-horse Joshua Pollard∗ The Uffington White Horse is a unique later prehistoric geoglyph worked onto the chalk hillside of the Berkshire Downs in southern England. This large figure has seen little new interpretation since the early twentieth century. Unable to explain the form satisfactorily, archaeologists have shied away from acknowledging the distinct nature of the horse and its probable importance to previous occupants of the land. By reviewing the image’s context within the broader London archaeological landscape, the argument can N Uffington now be made that the Uffington carving 0km500 White Horse is a representation of the sun-horse found in iconography throughout later prehistoric Europe. Keywords: England, later prehistory, Uffington White Horse, sun-horse, landscape Introduction The Uffington White Horse is Europe’s only confirmed prehistoric hill-figure or geoglyph, and is among the oldest anywhere in the world. Created in the later second or first millennium BC, it is also unusual in being a figurative representation within a surprisingly resilient tradition of non-representational imagery in prehistoric Britain (Figure 1). It is quite distinct from the only other form of prehistoric landscape art known in the British Isles: the abstract motifs that make up rock art panels within upland regions (Bradley 1997). A widely used image within popular culture, the White Horse features on album covers by XTC and Nirvana, and in fictional literature by Rosemary Sutcliffe, A.J. Hartley and Terry Pratchett. Its most famous literary incarnation comes in Thomas Hughes’s (1859) The scouring of the White Horse, a semi-fictional account of the last great festival linked to the ‘scouring’ or cleaning of the horse held in 1857.

  • Neolithic & Early Bronze Age Berkshire
    SOLENT THAMES RESEARCH FRAMEWORK NEOLITHIC AND EARLY BRONZE AGE BERKSHIRE Steve Ford March 2007 Inheritance The onset of the Neolithic period in Berkshire, has by far the best legacy from the Mesolithic period within the Solent-Thames region as a whole. This legacy stems from the position of the now small county (since 1974 reorganisation) dominated by the major river valley of the Thames and its significant tributaries, the Kennet, Loddon and Colne. This riverine bias, as Clark identified some 80 years ago (Clark 1934) and as detailed by Chisholm (this volume), in particular the middle Kennet Valley, have a wealth of mesolithic evidence, comprising stratified assemblages with faunal, floral, environmental and scientifically dated assemblages (not of course forgetting the lithics). This evidence is less detailed for the Thames Valley and Loddon Valleys (Ames 1993; Harding and Richards 1993; Ford 1997). Another significant issue with regards to legacy is that the county is particularly favourably placed in terms of systematic large scale fieldwalking survey data from other geological outcrops away from the major river valleys (Gaffney and Tingle 1989; Ford 1987a; Ford 1997; Lobb and Rose 1996). These fieldwalking surveys, whilst necessarily dealing with unstratified and plough dispersed material, are nevertheless particularly adept (and perhaps the only systematic way) of finding comparable Mesolithic material away from the buried valley sites. That a significant proportion of our neolithic evidence is recovered from the downlands of West Berkshire and Wessex beyond, it is rather valuable that the mesolithic legacy in these latter areas is assessed in a comparable way. It is perhaps at locations such as Churn Plain at the headwaters of the river Pang now just within Oxfordshire where there is evidence for a coincidence of Mesolithic and early Neolithic where the direct transition from Mesolithic to Neolithic could be explored directly.
