Oneg Shabbat w/R’ Lau (SH) 8:45 When Rav Lau was appointed Chief Ashkenazai Rabbi of the State of Israel in 2013, at the age of 47, he was the youngest ever Latest Shema 9:04 am to be elected to that office. Without that support, all outcomes from the negotiation table are at much higher risk of failure. Within Israel, there are key sectors of the population that have not been involved in peace initiatives, but who have an influence on the peace process. Most peace initiatives have focused on those in Israel who are already part of the peace camp. If a future accord is to bring lasting peace, it is essential that sidelined groups are brought into the peace process, especially as there will potentially be a referendum on the subject.

Acoustics were terrible, if not nonexistent, and many congregants decided to cease attending services because they felt disconnected from the activity inside. Turning to then-Israeli Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and former Haifa Chief Rabbi She’ar Yashuv Cohen, Schneier was referred to Yisrael Rozen, a national-religious rabbi whose Zomet Institute in Alon Shvut had developed a Halacha- friendly sound system. Microphones, like the issue of separation of the sexes during prayers, had long been one of the dividing lines between Orthodox and Conservative congregations, with traditionalists shunning the technology as a violation of the legal norms regulating Shabbat observance.

This is the first time Orthodox rabbis have been ordained in Poland since World War II, said the organizers of the ordination ceremony. Neither the newly ordained rabbis nor Schudrich are indigenous Poles. Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, chief rabbi of Tel Aviv and a Holocaust survivor born in Poland, called the ordination an "historical event." "There is no greater revenge than this against the Nazis and their helpers, who hoped to execute the Final Solution," said [Rav] Lau. "The Jewish people and its rabbis are alive and well even here in Warsaw." However, Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, head of the Ateret Yerushalayim Yeshiva and rabbi of Beit El, said in response that while the local community should be supported, the main goal should be to convince Polish Jews to immigrate to Israel. "Our place is not in Poland," said [Rav] Aviner. "The Polish people are anti- Semites. That is why the Nazis chose them as collaborators.
