One who brought an offering accidental transgressions. A Kohen Gadol who had to lay their hands upon it (semicha). The accidentally contravened specific serious shechita (slaughter) of the animal could be done prohibitions had to bring a bull, parts of which by anyone, but the processes thereafter (catching were burned on the mizbeach, the rest were the blood and sprinkling it on the altar) were burned outside the camp. A similar process had performed only by the Kohanim. The olah offering to be done if the High Court’s (Sanhedrin) ruling was cut up and all of the pieces were burned on caused an accidental transgression by the the mizbeach (altar). The verses detail an olah common people. -

Herschel Schachter related that he and his wife had met someone called ‘the Nazir’ during a trip to Israel. R. Schachter quoted the Nazir’s regarding the difficulty Moshe had with the division of the land in the matter the daughters of Zelophehad and the Talmudic assertion (Baba Batra 158b) that “the air of the Land of Israel enlightens”. Although the gist of the connection I have by now unfortunately forgotten, what I do remember is R. Schachter citing the hiddush of a modern-day Nazir, and how much of a curio it was at the time. ‘The Nazir’, or R. David Cohen (1887-1972) probably would have been quite satisfied with that. Towards the end of Mishnat ha-Nazir (Jerusalem, 2005) – to my knowledge, the most extensive excerpting of the Nazir’s diaries since the the three-volume gedenkschrift Nezir Ehav (Jerusalem, 1978), and the selections printed in Prof. Dov Schwartz’ “Religious Zionism: Between Messianism and Rationalism” (Tel Aviv, 1999) – we see the Nazir himself fully conscious of the hiddush :(עמ’ ע) of his personal status נזיר הנני, שם זה הנני נושא בהדר קודש. אלמלא לא באתי אלא בשביל זה, לפרסם שם זה, להיות בלבות זרע קודש ישראל, צעירי הצאן, זכרונות קודשי עברם הגדול, בגילוי שכינה, טהרה וקדושה, להכות בלבם הרך גלי געגועים לעבר זה שיקום ויהיה לעתיד, חידוש ימינו כקדם, גם בשביל זה כדאי לשאת ולסבול and :(זכרונות מבית אבא מארי ,similarly (p. -

Without that support, all outcomes from the negotiation table are at much higher risk of failure. Within Israel, there are key sectors of the population that have not been involved in peace initiatives, but who have an influence on the peace process. Most peace initiatives have focused on those in Israel who are already part of the peace camp. If a future accord is to bring lasting peace, it is essential that sidelined groups are brought into the peace process, especially as there will potentially be a referendum on the subject. -

Simcha Levy and the Halacha Commission for the RCA publish a decision permitting certain microphones on Shabbat and Yom Tov. 1951 Agudas HaRabbonim in the US issued a ruling prohibiting all use of microphones on Shabbat. 1954 Rav Soloveitchik spoke at the RCA conference against the use of microphones on Shabbat.1 c1970 Chief Rabbi of Israel, R. Isser Yehudah Unterman issued a psak permitting a use of a microphone on Shabbat within very specific guidelines.2 Rav Shaul Yisraeli3 issued a psak permitting certain microphones on Shabbat. c1995 Rav Yisrael Rozen of Zomet created the Zomet microphone. 1. SHABBAT MICROPHONES CATCHING ON AMONG ORTHODOX DESPITE TABOOS Jerusalem Post, May 5 2015 Ten years ago, the overflow crowd during the height of the summer season at Rabbi Marc Schneier’s synagogue in Westhampton Beach, New York, was so large it had to be housed in tents on the lawn outside. Acoustics were terrible, if not nonexistent, and many congregants decided to cease attending services because they felt disconnected from the activity inside. Turning to then-Israeli Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and former Haifa Chief Rabbi She’ar Yashuv Cohen, Schneier was referred to Yisrael Rozen, a national-religious rabbi whose Zomet Institute in Alon Shvut had developed a Halacha- friendly sound system. Microphones, like the issue of separation of the sexes during prayers, had long been one of the dividing lines between Orthodox and Conservative congregations, with traditionalists shunning the technology as a violation of the legal norms regulating Shabbat observance. -

Volume 31Page Issue 4 June 2017 - Sivan 5777 The Shaliach The Shaliach News and Views from the Young Israel of Plainview F ROM THE R ABBI’ S S TUDY Yom Haatzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim1 Only a few weeks ago we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reunification of the Holy City, Jerusalem. Yom Yerushalayim recalls a moment in history that touched every Jewish soul. In a biblical reversal of fortunes, Gamel Abdel Nasser’s plans and threat expressed by the united Arab armies to throw the Jews into the sea were replaced by an epochal victory that brought about the solidification of the state of Israel and control over the Western Wall and the old city INSIDE THIS ISSUE: of Jerusalem. The list of endearing images -- paratroopers wailing at the Western Wall, Israelis of all stripes linking hands to dance in the streets, of Abba Eban’s great defense of the Jewish state at the United Nations, Moshe Dayan’s solemn walk to the Kotel, Rav Shlomo Goren’s sho- far blow - is endless. Rabbi’s Study 1, 8 The six day war inspired Yom Yerushalayim, a holiday to counterpart with Yom Haatzmaut, the celebration of Israel’s independence. Interestingly, the history of contemporary Israel, where sovereignty arrived before Jerusalem, mirrors the founding of Ancient Israel. Joshua Committee Directory 2 conquered the lands between the Mediterranean and the Jordan to carve out a home for the Isra- elite and only generations later did King David declare Jerusalem as the capital city. President’s Pen 3 Maimonides (Temple Laws, Chapter 6) notes that what we are dealing with here are not only different historical moments, but divergent holinesses.
