PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE .

One of my closest friends recently suggested New ideas need to be developed. Whether it’s that we rename the days of the week during this programming, spirituality, educational - in all of the pandemic. In doing so we can turn strange of more calendar pages and we head into what times into strong times. promises to be a most unusual high holiday season. Wishing all of us a healthy, creative, productive summer! My last few columns have outlined many of the efforts the shul has made toward remaining David Lasko engaged with its members, from virtual minyanim PRESIDENT to online programming to rabbinic home visits and so many more. The infrastructure that was build and nurtured over so many years by our founders and builders allowed for us to maintain a good community presence, even in trying times.

However, as the length of these restrictions go on I’d like to propose a challenge to the membership. Those who built Young Israel of Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale could never have imagined a situation like this. It is one of those things one has to live through to even begin to understand. So this is an opportunity for those who built and those who came later.

From the Chicago Rabbinical Council: In preparation for the summer season we have been checking the infestation levels of fresh corn on the cob, and have been finding a very high amount of insects in the husks. However, once the husks are removed and the raw corn is washed, there are almost no insects left. (Part of our experiment has been to carefully remove the kernels from the cob to see if there are any insects underneath or between the kernels that the rinse did not remove.) We therefore recommend thoroughly washing each cob before cooking or grilling it. One should not grill the corn in its husk.

The certification of factory produced meat and poultry products is valid only as long as the original factory packaging and labeling remain intact. Once the package is opened and the product is repackaged by a local store, the original certification is no longer in effect. Reliable supervision is necessary at the store level to assure the Kashrut of the repackaged product. Repackaged meat and poultry products should not be purchased from an unsupervised store, even if the store label on the product lists the name of a Kosher brand or the name/symbol of a Kashrut certification.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS : THREE WEEKS EDITION Q: Is it permissible to purchase something online that will not arrive until after Tisha B'Av? A: There are two factors to consider regarding purchasing items. First, during the Three Weeks we try to refrain from reciting Shehechiyanu. Second, during the Nine Days, we try to avoid transactions that are not necessary. Regarding the Shehechiyanu factor, if the item will not arrive until after Tisha B'Av, or it is an item that is not special enough to warrant a Shehechiyanu, there is no concern. Regarding, the transaction factor, one should only purchase something that one needs soon after Tisha B'Av, even if it won't arrive until after Tisha B'Av.

Q: If someone is on a diet that requires eating meat, is it permissible to eat meat during the Nine Days? A: If someone has an ailment that requires eating meat, it is permissible to eat meat. The Mishnah Berura notes that if someone has difficulty eating dairy and pareve foods, he may eat chicken but not beef.

Q: I am in the middle of construction on my home. My contractor was supposed to finish before the Nine Days, but he is not finished. What should I do? A: If the contractor is a non-Jew, and he does not have to complete the work by a certain date, he is technically permitted to work during the Nine Days. If he can do the work after Tisha B'Av, it is preferable, even if the contractor will charge a small fee. If he is performing a necessary repair (e.g. leaking roof, air conditioner repair), there is no concern.

Q: What should I do for on Saturday Night during the Nine Days? A: If there is a child who is educated enough to understand the concept of Havdalah, but not old enough to understanding mourning the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash, he should drink the grape juice from Havdalah. If not, one may drink it her/himself. Some have the practice of reciting Havdalah on beer. Managed I.T. Security Service Support

America & Israel: A Partnership that Benefits Us The U.S.-Israel relationship is a mutually beneficial partnership that reinforces America’s moral values and strategic interests. This relationship with the only democracy in the Middle East is a key pillar of America’s regional security framework. The U.S.-Israel partnership is constantly growing and expanding into new areas, including science, technology, health, energy, agriculture, homeland security and defense. Today, some have proposed reducing our ties with Israel because they object to the potential decision by Israel’s leaders to extend Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank. Doing anything to weaken this vital relationship would be a mistake. Israel remains the one stable, democratic ally in the Middle East upon which America can consistently depend. Israel’s military strength and central geostrategic location provide a strong deterrent to regional actors opposed to the United States. Moreover, Israel’s capabilities in designing advanced military, homeland security, counterterrorism and cyber-protection technologies help the United States meet our growing security challenges. The United States and Israel share interests in deterring war, promoting stability and creating lasting peace. These goals are achievable only if the United States continues to help ensure Israel’s qualitative military edge—the ability to counter and defeat any credible conventional military threat while sustaining minimal damages and casualties. American support for Israel promotes peace and helps deter regional conflict by making clear to potential foes that they cannot defeat the Jewish state. A strong U.S.-Israel relationship is essential for achieving a genuine peace between the Jewish state and its Arab neighbors, including the Palestinians. A viable two-state agreement is only attainable if America’s support for Israel is ironclad, and the Jewish state knows it can take risks for peace because its ally and partner has its back. Despite increasingly close ties, it is inevitable that there will be areas of political or policy disagreement between leaders on both sides—as there are between America and all our allies. However, bipartisan support for the fundamentals of the U.S.-Israel strategic relationship must supersede any policy dispute. This is important for not only Israel’s security but for America’s as well. Indeed, America is more secure when Israel is strong.
