This codex is the author's own copy, in his own hand, of a commentary on Books IV and V of the decretels of Pope Gregory IX, approved by the ecclesiastical censor Giovanni Francesco Comb[edi?] at Naples in 1519. These books treat on betrothal and marriage (De sponsalibus et matrimoniis) and criminal procedure (De accusationibus, inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus). The approval of the Order On 11 February 1304, the Dominican Pope Benedict XI, then in the first year of his pontificate, sent a bull, beginning with the words Dum levamus, from his palace of the Lateran in Rome to the prior general and all priors and friars of the Order of the Servants of Saint Mary. With this, he gave approval to the Rule and Constitutions they professed, and thus to the Order of the Servants of Saint Mary which had originated in Florence some seventy years previously. For the Servants of Saint Mary a long period of waiting had come to an end, and a new era of development began for the young religious institute which had come to take its place among the existing religious orders. The bull, or pontifical letter, of Pope Benedict XI does not say anything about the origins of the Order; it merely recognizes that Servites follow the Rule of St. Augustine and legislation common to other orders embracing the same Rule.

Saint Peter of Verona
Saint Peter of Verona SAINT OF THE DAY 06-04-2021 Among the most depicted saints due to the circumstances of his martyrdom, Peter of Verona (c. 1205-1252) was born from parents involved with Catharism, the heresy that he fought throughout his life, accomplishing numerous conversions. He converted to the Catholic faith as a child, learning to recite the Creed at the age of seven, and later studied at the University of Bologna. In this city, when he was fifteen years old, he met Saint Dominic de Guzmán, founder of the Order of the Friars Preachers, which Peter joined. According to the Martyrology, “Peter received the habit from Saint Dominic himself”, who returned to the Father’s House on 6 August 1221. Peter distinguished himself preaching in various cities in central-northern Italy, from Rome to Milan, where he worked on behalf of the popes to eradicate the Cathar heresy that had spread there like wildfire. In 1244 he was sent to Florence and here too he succeeded in bringing back to the true faith many souls who had fallen into error. His brilliant sermons in the Tuscan city aroused the admiration of the seven founding saints of the Order of the Servants of Mary: he became their spiritual father and after ardent prayers obtained confirmation from the Blessed Virgin that the new order had been born of precise heavenly inspiration. Peter's success in conversions and his zeal in defending orthodoxy brought him over the years many enemies among heretics and, at the same time, many admirers among Christians, who witnessed his austere life and his great familiarity with the Holy Scriptures.

There were three groups of canonized or beatified Dominican martyrs in the Far East—in China, in Japan, and in Vi- etnam. Peter Martyr: the Inquisitor As Saint
PETER MARTYR: THE INQUISITOR AS SAINT by Christine Caldwell When Stefano Vermigli, a Florentine shoemaker, was distraught over the deaths of several of his children, he adopted a not uncommon strat- egy to safeguard any future offspring from danger: he vowed to a saint that were a child to live, he would dedicate it to him. The happy result of this vow was a healthy boy, born in 1500, who was duly named after the accommodating saint. However, we have reason to believe that the boy’s future activities would not have pleased his saintly patron, who may well have wished that he had never hearkened to Stefano’s pious request. For Peter Martyr Vermigli would later embrace Protestantism, which the saint, the Dominican Peter of Verona or Peter Martyr, would undoubtedly have viewed as a heresy no different from those that he had sought to exterminate throughout his career as preacher and in- quisitor.1 Unlike Stefano, we are not accustomed to search for divine assis- tance among medieval inquisitors of heretical depravity. The tradition of historiography on inquisition born from sixteenth-century polemics has shied from examining forthrightly the religious character of inqui- sitions against heresy, which were conducted throughout Europe with variable success and energy by authorities of all kinds beginning in the late 1220s. HORNIK he continuity of the Church triumphant is demonstrated in this Florentine fresco from the fourteenth century in the Dominican Tchurch complex of Santa Maria Novella. It is located in the Chapter House, or meeting room, adjacent to the nave of the basilica. Frescos on the other three walls further recognize and celebrate the Dominican order and the Church with scenes from The Passion of Christ, The Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas, and The Life of St. Peter Martyr. Both Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and Peter Martyr, or Peter of Verona (1205-1252), had been prominent members of the order in its early years. The Dominicans are a religious order of mendicant friars founded by St. Dominic (1170-1221) and sanctioned by the papacy in 1216.1 Dominicans and Franciscans, as preaching orders whose convents were within cities, spread quickly throughout Medieval Europe. The Dominicans were especially attractive to devout Catholics because they set up not only the First and Second Orders (for men and women), but also a Third Order for laypeople who wished to dedicate themselves to a religious life.

Chapter 7 Confraternities and the Inquisition: For and Against Christopher F. Black 1 Introduction1 The interconnections between confraternities and inquisitions start in the 13th century, and thereafter were diverse, intermittent, friendly and hostile. As far as surviving documentary evidence indicates, not many confraternities were involved. Secrecy surrounding many confraternities could cause suspicion from ecclesiastical and civilian authorities, leading to denunciations. Secrecy similarly inhibits knowledge about those confraternities that supposedly as- sisted the inquisitions. Historians are impeded by the poor survival of both confraternal and inquisitorial records. More is currently known about the inter-connections between confraternities and inquisitions in northern and central Italy than in the Italian south, or in Iberia and the Spanish and Portu- guese colonies. Having written books and articles initially on Italian confra- ternities and later on the Inquisitions in Italy, I have a bias of knowledge and perspective towards them, but advice from colleagues and contacts dealing with Iberia as well as my sampling the historical secondary literature suggests that the interconnections in Iberia have, in fact, been under-studied. This may reflect the lack of information, but also different roles of confraternities and local inquisition tribunals in the Iberian world. The “For” in my sub-title covers those confraternities established to support local inquisitors, often embracing inquisition officials and “familiars”; the “Against” covers those confraternities that were denounced to inquisitors as needing investigation for heretical or suspicious practices, and harbouring religious dissidents. No confraternity de- liberately set out to undermine the Inquisition as such, but some did battle to resist intervention and control by a local inquisitor and tribunal.

It is a compendium of saints’ lives and of liturgical and doctrinal instruction, culled in the 1260s from a wide range of patristic and medieval sources. Its compiler, Blessed Jacobus de Voragine (the Latin form of Jacopo or Giacomo de Varrazze, ca. 1229–1298), intended his book as an aid for busy priests and preachers in need of a handy source of vivid anecdote, instruction, and edification to bulk out their sermons and catecheses.1 Many such compilations were produced in thirteenth-century Europe, as the Church sought both to promote more active religious engagement among parish clergy and laypeople, and to police the orthodoxy of popular belief and practice. The new orders of mendicant friars were in the forefront of this campaign to instruct and enthuse ordinary Christians, and Jacobus, an Italian Dominican friar who became Prior of the Lombard Province in 1267, was working in a tradition established earlier in the same century by members of his own relatively new order. Jean de Mailly began work on his Abbreviatio in gestis et miraculis sanctorum in the late 1220s, within ten years of the foundation of the Order of Preachers, and his fellow Dominican Bartholomew of Trent produced his Epilogus in gesta sanctorum in the mid-1240s.2 Jacobus drew freely on both these collections, but those books, popular as they were, survive now in just a couple of dozen manuscripts apiece.
