Species Accounts
Species accounts The list of species that follows is a synthesis of all the botanical knowledge currently available on the Nyika Plateau flora. It does not claim to be the final word in taxonomic opinion for every plant group, but will provide a sound basis for future work by botanists, phytogeographers, and reserve managers. It should also serve as a comprehensive plant guide for interested visitors to the two Nyika National Parks. By far the largest body of information was obtained from the following nine publications: • Flora zambesiaca (current ed. G. Pope, 1960 to present) • Flora of Tropical East Africa (current ed. H. Beentje, 1952 to present) • Plants collected by the Vernay Nyasaland Expedition of 1946 (Brenan & collaborators 1953, 1954) • Wye College 1972 Malawi Project Final Report (Brummitt 1973) • Resource inventory and management plan for the Nyika National Park (Mill 1979) • The forest vegetation of the Nyika Plateau: ecological and phenological studies (Dowsett-Lemaire 1985) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 1997 report (Patel 1999) • Biosearch Nyika Expedition 2001 report (Patel & Overton 2002) • Evergreen forest flora of Malawi (White, Dowsett-Lemaire & Chapman 2001) We also consulted numerous papers dealing with specific families or genera and, finally, included the collections made during the SABONET Nyika Expedition. In addition, botanists from K and PRE provided valuable input in particular plant groups. Much of the descriptive material is taken directly from one or more of the works listed above, including information regarding habitat and distribution. A single illustration accompanies each genus; two illustrations are sometimes included in large genera with a wide morphological variance (for example, Lobelia). -

Kakudidi1, Mukadasi Buyinza2, Justine Namaalwa2, Maud Kamatenesi3, Patrick Mucunguzi1 and James Kalema1 Abstract Background: An ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants was carried out in 14 villages adjacent to Mabira Central Forest Reserve (CFR) in Central Uganda between August 2013 and March 2014. Methods: Information was obtained through interviews using semi- structured questionnaires. Field excursions with traditional healers and herbal medicine collectors were carried out. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data. Fidelity ratios and Informant consensus agreements were calculated. Results: A total of 190 plant species in 61 families and 152 genera were reported in the treatment of various health conditions. Family Fabaceae was dominant representing 14 % of the plant species documented. Vernonia amygdalina was the preferred species for treating malaria. Leaves (68 %) were the most frequently used parts in preparing herbal remedies. Decoctions (29 %) and oral route (53 %) of administration were commonly used method of herbal medicine preparation and administration respectively. Fifty-eight health conditions grouped in 25 categories were treated using medicinal plants. Informant consensus agreement was highest for blood system disorders (0.9) that included anaemia, hypertension and blood cleansing indicating homogeneity of informant’s knowledge about remedies used. Vernonia amygdalina and Erythrina abyssinica had 100 % fidelity level for treatment of malaria and vomiting respectively. Conclusion: The diversity of medicinal plant species used and the associated indigenous knowledge are of great value to the local community and their conservation and preservation is paramount. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT A new genus of schistopterine fruit-flies, Tanzanimyia, and four new species, T. flavicauda, T. reticulata, T. tanzaniaensis and T. ugandaensis (type species), are described from Equatorial Africa, based on adults. The larvae of T. ugandaensis and T. reticulata infest the flower heads of Bothriocline fusca, and those of T. reticulata also infest the flower heads of Gutenbergia cordifolia var. cordifolia (Asteraceae: Vernonieae). Illustrations of taxonomically relevant body parts of both sexes are provided, primarily for the two reared species. An identification key for the new species is compiled. INTRODUCTION The Schistopterini (Tephritidae: Tephritinae) is a moderately large tribe, containing at least 200 species, assigned to 15 genera, although about two-thirds of the species are still undescribed, and some of them belong to undescribed genera (Freidberg 2002; Zonstein & Freidberg 2006). The goal of this study is to describe Tanzanimyia, a new genus of Schistopterini, and its four new species, all from Equatorial Africa, as another step in our ongoing revision of this tribe (Freidberg 2002; Zonstein & Freidberg 2006). In Freidberg’s (2002) key to the schistopterine genera, Tanzanimyia runs to the couplets distinguishing between the Australo-Oriental-Palearctic genus Cal loptera Freidberg and the complex of five Afrotropical genera: Cordylopterix Hering, Melanopterella Freidberg, Schistotephritis Freidberg, Heringomyia Hardy and Clematochaeta Hering. -
