The Yamadutas on the right and the Vishnudutas on the left While the body is being cremated the family members who had remained back at the home where the funeral had just taken place, should cleanse the house by mopping the floors with a mixture of lime water or rose water or just water with a few drops of Ganga jal in the water before the Claimant (the one who performed the rite) and the others return from the cremation site. When the family members return from the river/sea/ghat after disposing the ashes, they stand by the entrance of the yard and they are cleansed by washing their hands firstly and then touching the following items which are for purification. These are the following items: - touch water, fire and iron (or a metal) with syringaberry leaves and sprinkle this over yourself three times and then sprinkle a little water on yourself. After this ritual they enter the house and take a bath and wear clean clothes. Then the next step is after you have worn clean clothes, you now need to keep a picture of the deceased and a clay lamp in front of the picture, in a room or a designated area in a southerly direction. This clay lamp must be kept lit continuously for 12 days. On the 12th day this lamp must go off by itself. AND THIS LAMP MUST NOT BE TAKEN ON THE 10TH DAY TO THE RIVER.

    MAHALAYA PAKSHA & PRATYABDHIKA SRAADDHA This year Manmatha varusha, the Mahalaya Paksha starts from 28 September 2015. On the other day some one, a member of our forum, called my personal number and wanted to know if one doesn't do (or not care to perform) the pratyaabdhika sraaddha (the annual ceremony) for his parents, but whether still can he observe and perform Mahalaya paksha in some format or other, ie., hiranya rupa or tarpana vidhi. Yes, he can. However, let me also add this much. Nothing can compensate or substitute the Pratyabdhika Sraaddha. Also, one may not get the desired results if he abandons the annual sraaddha but performs the Mahalaya Paksha in lieu, or even go to Gaya and performs the related Sraaddha karyams there as a compensation or substitute. Though these karyams done with good intention, let me stress, he or his family can not escape from the pitru shapa. There is no 'at least ' business as far as the annual sraaddha is concerned. Of course it is altogether different if one's health fails or his sarira dharmam prevents him from doing the sraaddha. Sastras allow a person in that case to observe the Sraaddha (to perform it) in a simplified manner. Let me elaborate further. A WORD ABOUT MAHALAYAM: Mahalaya paksha, which is also known as 'pitru paksha' is very great and one should not think of skipping it on any count. It is said in Sastras that this paskha has immense values and gives satisfaction to the pitrus. During the paksha the souls of the pitrus will descend to earth in the form of spirits and will be present around their current biological descendants to see their conditions.

This study is proposed to explain the scientific approach towards the Indian festivals to promote good health and to overcome the wrong beliefs of mythological stories to particular festivals. Indian culture is having great diversities in traditions and customs.It could be due to geographical distribution .Maharashtra also follow its own customs & traditions and celebrate festivals for the acceptance of this environmental changes to mentain sound health rather than follow rituals and beliefs on mythological stories. So, while celebrating festivals one should follow the regimen of ritu sandhi according to desha (land).
