Zionsville’s cultural hub for Art, History and Genealogy

The SullivanMunce Cultural Center, comprised of a History , Genealogy Library and Art Center, is an independent 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to preserving the history of Zionsville, and Boone County in suburban , through its presentation of educational material via exhibitions and outreach programs for the community. Established in 1973, the Center is collectively recognized as the historical, artistic and cultural center of the Zionsville community; providing exhibits, programs and other resources unparalleled for a community of its size in first-class, facilities which are sensitive to the historic character of the town.

The Sullivan Museum houses community archives and exhibition galleries that showcase permanent as well as temporary traveling exhibits. The museum is an important repository of the heritage of Zionsville, Boone County and the state of Indiana; it safeguards and protects the important cultural remains of the citizens of this area.

The Munce Art Center exhibits and sells works of art from the local and regional community by holding numerous professional and community art shows each year. The art center offers art instruction for students of all ages, and spring break and summer camps for children ages 4 through 11.

With over 7,000 volumes, the Genealogy Library houses one of the largest private genealogy collections in the region. It is an inviting place where one can spend an hour or a day reading and researching information from the open stacks of local, state, regional and national records.

1 Adult Classes

Beginning/Intermediate Oil Painting This beginning/intermediate oil painting class allows students to paint their chosen subjects such as still life, landscape, etc., while learning and experimenting with different oil painting techniques. Demonstrations will be given on a variety of these techniques. Students will be able to work at their own pace.

Techniques and Composition in Acrylic Painting Learn the many acrylic painting techniques such as impasto, glazing and watercolor! Experiment with a variety of mediums for a numerous effects. Learn the basics of good composition within the painting. Students will be able to work at their own pace.

Fundamentals of Photography Starting with the very basics of how to hold the camera. We will learn all of the shooting modes, different lens types, what an F-stop and shutter speed are and much more! 3 Adult Classes

Sewing With Knit Fabric Workshop From t-shirts, hoodies and swimsuits to everything in-between, we love to wear knit garments. Knit garments are soft, comfortable and easy to care for. Sewing with knits is easy, especially when some of the more difficult details, such as zippers, are eliminated. This class is for the beginning seamstress. Topics include: patterns specifically designed for knits, fit, fabric choices, seams, seam allowances and sewing machine needles designed for knits. To introduce you to sewing knits, you will sew a teddy bear for the children at the Boone County Helping Hands Emergency Women’s Shelter. Pattern, fabric and stuffing provided. Pattern Fitting Workshop Simplicity, McCall, Vogue and all the other commercial pattern companies base their pattern sizes on standard measurements . There is even a standard height! If your body matches those standard measurements exactly, you will get a perfect fit. If not, no pattern will fit. You will get close, but something will always be a little too tight, too long, too short or just a little wonky. If you would like to learn simple, easy to understand changes you can make to the pattern, this class is for you. The changes will be simple and easy. Come to class with questions and leave with confidence and enthusiasm. 4 Adult Classes

The Art of Felt Making Felt is humankind’s first fiber. It starts with nothing more than a loose cloud of wool. Using only warm, soapy water and skillful manipulation, the wool can be transformed into beautiful and useful felt art wearables and . The class will concentrate on creating art wearables made with flat pieces of hand- made felt. No experience required.

Week One: How to make felt. Students will learn to felt a scarf and learn how to create the yardage. Week Two: Exploration into surface design and basic needle felting techniques. Week Three: 3-D Bags—Creating bags without sewing. Week Four: Nuno Felt Making—Create a scarf for Spring by felting colorful wool into a silk or cotton base. Week Five and Six: Create your signature hat using all the techniques learned from the course. Embellishment on the last session.

One Session January 21 - March 4 (6 weeks)

6 Adult Classes Beginning Hand-Building This class is designed for the student who has very little or no experience with clay. The students will learn how to construct hand-built objects with coil, pinch and slab techniques. The class will concentrate first on small objects such as tiles, boxes, rattles and plates and then move on to build larger objects such as platters, planters and vases. Clay Students will create work using a variety of hand-building techniques and basic clay sculpture tools. Students may work in a realistic, abstract or non-objective manner to create one-of-a-kind sculptures or even functional objects and unique tile murals. Parent/Child Pottery Class This class is designed for parents and children ages 6 and up to learn to make pots together. This will be a great opportunity to bond with your child while being creative. MASTERS OF ART Study master artists throughout history. Experiment with different techniques made famous by artists such as Leonardo de Vinci, Picasso, Money and Pollack. Try action painting, sketching and designing inventions, “painting” with pastels and building a sculpture! Campers will also learn about Hoosier artists and view the current Hoosier artist exhibit here at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.

Mini Masters Children will become Mini Masters by learning about a different master artist and a new art technique each week! Students will be exploring action painting, impressionist painting, pastel, sculptures, and much more! We will wrap up the class with an art show party! Parents are invited to participate for an additional fee of $50.

Art Through Time Explore art through time. Each class will focus on a different time period in art history. Students will complete a project each week utilizing different materials, such as charcoal, paint, markers and more!

Wheel for Youth (6-11 year olds) This class is designed for students who want to work on the pottery wheels exclusively. The students will focus on creating vessel forms, plates and bowls. Beginners will learn basic wheel skills, centering, opening, pulling and shaping. Clay and glazes are included in the class fee. No experience necessary.

13 Meet the Instructors Cindy Baker - Cindy began serious sewing in 1983 when she wanted good quality and low cost maternity career wear. She also learned how to quilt and bought a spinning wheel that year. The quilting bug became permanent and she sold the spinning wheel. She finds hand quilting very relaxing and it is one of her favorite things to do.

In addition to quilting, Cindy’s other interests include wearable art, costumes, fitting and alterations, collecting and repairing sewing machines. She has approximately 100 sewing machines.

Cindy does volunteer mending at a local nursing home and also does costume making at local theaters. She has also been a Red Cross CPR & First Aid instructor. She is a 4-H Sewing Project Leader and hosts 9 sewing workshops a year to teach children in grades 3-12 basic sewing techniques such as darts, zippers, & buttonholes. She is also a member of the Quilters’ Guild of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis chapter of the American Sewing Guild and Boone County Extension Homemakers.

John Preston Hanks - John studied art at Indiana State University and the John Herron School of Art in the 1960’s. He has been a portrait artist for 35 years, working in pencil and watercolor. He has taught painting in Carmel and Zionsville for the past 10 years. John has been a Zionsville resident since 1992.

Teresa Hutchinson - Teresa has been playing bridge since she was 9 years old and her parents needed a fourth player. Her father is 92 years old and still teaches bridge on a regular basis. Teresa has lived in Zionsville over 20 years, has three adult sons and has been married to Tom for thirty years. Teresa is active in the community and has been involved with the Ghost Walk event here at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.

Eileen Keenan - Born and raised in Zionsville, Eileen started taking pictures when she was 15 and fell in love with photography. Eileen studied both at the Herron School of Art and Colorado Mountain College in her early 20’s where she learned everything from composition to f- stops and shutter speeds to black and white printing. In 2006 she finally had the opportunity to attend the Career Training Program at Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP), which was the best thing she said she could have done for her photography career. Since 2006, Eileen has been on the teaching staff with RMSP covering everything from the basics to advanced photography, Photoshop programs, Studio lighting and much more. 14 Meet the Instructors Cindy Leavesley - Cynthia Leavesley is currently enjoying life as a pastel and oil painter. At other times, she has been an art teacher, muralist, faux finisher, interior decorator and folk artist. She has studied with Robert Eberle, Elizabeth Mowry, Rosalie Nadeau, Stan Moeller, Greg Storer and Mary Jean Weber. She is a member of the Indiana Plein Air Painters where she enjoys participating in paint out events around the state. She has exhibited her work at the annual Hoosier Salon and Indian Heritage Arts exhibitions and is a juried member of the Pastel Society of America. Her work can be seen at the Hoosier Salon and at other venues around Indianapolis, as well as several locations in Maine and at her in Zionsville. www.cindyleavesley.com

Soyong Kang Partington - Soyong studied graphic design under the famous fabric designer, Jong Hwa Park and sculptor Jong Myung Hong at Sook Myung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. She was told by her own parents to study graphic design in college and not ceramics because they believed that there were already too many potters in Korea. But years later, Soyong finally gave into her desire to learn ceramics and started taking ceramic classes at the Indianapolis Art Center. Since 1988 she has either taught, monitored or assisted with ceramic classes at the Indianapolis Art Center. She participates in Broad Ripple Art Fair and has frequent one woman shows at various art galleries throughout the Midwest. Her art is shown at well-known local galleries. She is fluent in the Korean language and in English and is currently a workshop coordinator at the World Ceramic Exposition Korea 2011. (WOCEK). www.soyong.com

Amelia Roberts - Amelia Roberts received her degree in Visual Communications at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. She has a freelance design business and paints in her spare time. Amelia also has a love for all artistic mediums, such as fabric, paper and paint. She has taught art and sewing classes for the last two years at the Morton Community Center in West Lafayette.

15 Meet the Instructors

Mike Scherer - Michael Scherer is a native Indiana artist. Born in Noblesville, Indiana, he was raised on a small farm about a mile south of Arcadia, Indiana. He always has had a deep admiration and love for nature and began drawing animals, plants, trees and landscapes at an early age.

After graduating from Hamilton Heights High School, he attended , Bloomington, Indiana, and earned two degrees in Fine Art and Art Education. He taught art classes at St. Joan of Arc Elementary and Middle School and Cathedral High School for a number of years before he went on to work as a graphic designer for the State of Indiana at the Commission on Public Records.

During all these years he still pursued his passion of painting and sculpting artwork from nature. Recently he resigned his position with the State of Indiana after 18 years of service to paint, sculpt and teach full time. He teaches drawing and painting classes at the Indianapolis Art Center and the SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville, Indiana

Paula Scott-Frantz - Paula Scott-Frantz started exploring the wool into felt process almost a decade ago. Using other natural materials as surface design is one of her trade marks. “Helping people feel the joy of their worth through their own creativity”. This is what teaching is all about. Paula is a former Lead Artist of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Paula sells her work at the By Hand Gallery and The Art Venue in Bloomington, IN as well as in art fairs and festivals around the state. ct spalding - Catherine Spalding is a photographer and creative photography workshop instructor. Her photographs capture the subtle influences evoking emotion within each of her subjects. The study of details allow her to capture her subjects uniqueness, which what drives her photographic art style. Her portfolio, comprised of strong works that capture the avant-garde perspectives she shoots, showcases her originality and imagination. She exhibits and sells her work in solo exhibits, events and to the commercial and residential interior design market.
