The Tension Between Artistic Autonomy and Social Engagement in Les Temps Nouveaux, 1896–1903 Laura Prins HCM 4 (1): 92–126 DOI: 10.18352/hcm.505 Abstract Between 1896 and 1903, Jean Grave, editor of the anarchist journal Les Temps Nouveaux, published an artistic album of original prints, with the collaboration of (avant-garde) artists and illustrators. While anar- chist theorists, including Grave, summoned artists to create social art, which had to be didactic and accessible to the working classes, artists wished to emphasize their autonomous position instead. Even though Grave requested ‘absolutely artistic’ prints in the case of this album, artists had difficulties with creating something for him, trying to com- bine their social engagement with their artistic autonomy. The artistic album appears to have become a compromise of the debate between the anarchist theorists and artists with anarchist sympathies. Each year staff from across the spectrum of STS disciplines – History, Philosophy, Sociology and Politics of Science – will come together to teach students how different perspectives can shed light on issues ranging from climate change to nuclear war, private healthcare to plastic pollution. Students have the opportunity to develop research and writing skills, and assessment will consist of a formative and a final essay. The text embraces awidegeographyinvestigating companies from coast to coast as well as the anglo- phoneCaribbean and African American companies touring Europe, Australia, and Africa. This history represents a catholicity of styles – from African ritual born out of slavery to European forms, from amateur to professional. It covers nearly two and ahalf centuries of black performance and production with issues of gender, class, and race ever in attendance. The volume encompasses aspects of performance such as minstrel, vaudeville, cabaret acts, musicals, and opera. Shows by white playwrights that used black casts, particularly in music and dance, are included, as are produc- tions of western classics and a host of Shakespeare plays. It focuses on four major ethnic groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and Native Americans. Within each category a distinction is made between those works with an authentic voice and those with a realistic voice. An authentic voice is an author or illustrator who is from the particular ethnic group and brings expertise and life experience to his/her writings or illustrations. A realistic voice is that of an author or illustrator whose work is from outside that experience, but with valuable observations. An asterisk notes the distinction. No distinction is drawn between juvenile literature and adult literature. The decision is left to the reader to make the choices, because some adult literature may contain selections appropriate to children. Feminist Artists' Book Projects of the 1980-90S
1 Bookworks as Networks: Feminist Artists’ Book Projects of the 1980-90s Caroline Fazzini Recent trends in contemporary exhibition, academic, and artistic practices in the U.S. illuminate a persistent concentration of efforts to present more complete versions of the past, specifically regarding issues of diversity and representation. Some museums and art historians have responded to the call for inclusivity by supporting exhibitions that focus on artists who have been marginalized. We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-1985, and Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985, which opened in 2017 at the Brooklyn Museum and the Hammer Museum, respectively, exemplify this corresponding surge of interest within the art and academic worlds of the Americas regarding women artists, and particularly women artists of color. My studies of these exhibitions, as well as my interest in artists’ books, led me to identify two collaborative artists’ book projects that emerged in the late 1980s, in the immediate aftermath of the time periods addressed in both We Wanted a Revolution and Radical Women. I aim to contribute to revisionist scholarly efforts by examining these two projects: Coast to Coast: A Women of Color National Artists’ Book Project (1987-1990) and Connections project/Conexus (1986-1989). Both were first and foremost, meant to initiate dialogues and relationships between women across borders through the making of art and artists’ books. While neither project has received scholarly attention to date, they are important examples of feminist collaborations between women artists. The projects, Connections project/Conexus (1986-1989), organized by Josely Carvalho and Sabra Moore, and Coast to Coast: A Women of Color National Artists’ Book Project (1987- 90), organized by Faith Ringgold and Clarissa Sligh, both took advantage of the accessibility of 2 artists’ books in an effort to include and encourage the participation of women artists. -

Press Release 12 January 2016 (For immediate release) SIDNEY POITIER TO BE HONOURED WITH BAFTA FELLOWSHIP London,12 January 2016: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts will honour Sir Sidney Poitier with the Fellowship at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 14 February. Awarded annually, the Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed by BAFTA upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games. Fellows previously honoured for their work in film include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor, Stanley Kubrick, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Lee, Martin Scorsese, Alan Parker and Helen Mirren. Mike Leigh received the Fellowship at last year’s Film Awards. Sidney Poitier said: “I am extremely honored to have been chosen to receive the Fellowship and my deep appreciation to the British Academy for the recognition.” Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Sidney Poitier is to become a Fellow of BAFTA. Sidney is a luminary of film whose outstanding talent in front of the camera, and important work in other fields, has made him one of the most important figures of his generation. His determination to pursue his dreams is an inspirational story for young people starting out in the industry today. By recognising Sidney with the Fellowship at the Film Awards on Sunday 14 February, BAFTA will be honouring one of cinema’s true greats.” Sir Sidney Poitier’s award-winning career features six BAFTA nominations, including one BAFTA win, and a British Academy Britannia Award for Lifetime Contribution to International Film.
