Archaeological Heritage in Lithuania after the 1990s: Defining, Protecting, Interpreting 161 Archaeological Heritage in Lithuania after the 1990s: Defining, Protecting, Interpreting Justina Poškienė Abstract The paper seeks to present developments in the state system of archaeological heritage protection in Lithu- ania after the 1990s. National legislation was essentially modified twice: in 1994 and in 2004. As- pects of defining (inventarisation, assessment and listing in the national Register of Cultural Properties), protecting (requirements for archaeological heritage protection, regulations on archaeological excavations’ procedures) and the interpreting of archaeological heritage (preservation of archaeological remains in situ) are under consideration. Keywords: archaeological heritage, assessment, archaeological excavations, in situ. Straipsnyje aptariami šie archeologinio paveldo apsaugos aspektai: apskaita (archeologinio paveldo vertinimas, įrašymas į Kultūros vertybių registrą, archeologinių objektų paveldosauginis statusas), ap- sauga (reikalavimai archeologiniams tyrimams, ardomųjų archeologinių tyrimų apimtys, archeologinių tyrimų kontrolės sistema) ir archeologinio paveldo interpretacija (archeologinio paveldo apsauga in situ). • National Minorities in Lithuania, a Study Visit
National Minorities in Lithuania; A study visit to Vilnius and Klaipėda for Mercator Education 7-14 November 2006 Tjeerd de Graaf and Cor van der Meer Introduction The Mercator-Education project hosted at the Frisian Academy has been established with the principal goal of acquiring, storing and disseminating information on minority and regional language education in the European region 1. Recently a computerised database containing bibliographic data, information about people and organisations involved in this subject has been established. The series of Regional Dossiers published by Mercator-Education provides descriptive information about minority languages in a specific region of the European Union, such as characteristics of the educational system and recent educational policies. At present, an inventory of the languages in the new states of the European Union is being made showing explicitly the position of ethnic minorities. In order to investigate the local situation in one of these new states in more detail and to inform representatives of the communities about the work of Mercator Education and the policies of the European Union in this field, a delegation from the Frisian Academy visited Lithuania in the week 7-14 November 2006. Together with Lithuanian colleagues a program for this visit was prepared according to the following schedule. Schedule of the study trip to Lithuania 7 – 14 November 2006 Tuesday 7 November: Arrival in Vilnius at 13:25 with TE465 16:00 Meeting at the Department of National Minorities and Lithuanians

  • Trakai History Museum, Exhibition of Liturgical Art
Newsletter No.5 For everyone interested in improving the accessibility of cultural heritage and tourism development Trakai History Museum, Exhibition of Liturgical Art Trakai History Museum was founded in 1948, in a natural scenery spot and the most famous complex of Lithuanian defensive architecture - in Island and Peninsula Castles. More than 290 thousand exhibits have been collected over 60 years of museum’s activities. The administration of the museum is located in the territory of Trakai Peninsula Castle, in the renovated building of former Dominican monastery. The first Dominican monks came to Trakai in the 17th century as some land in the territory of Trakai Peninsula Castle was granted to them. In 1799, the construction of the church was started. The construction was not finished due to the turmoil in the country and the church was abandoned until 1820. When L. Glovickis became the prior of the monastery, the naves of the church were rebuilt: the southern - into the monastery with cells, the northern - into the chapel. In 1822, the chapel was consecrated in the name of Saint Archangel Michael. In 1823 a monastery with eleven cells, a sacristy, a dining room and a kitchen was opened. There was a school near the monastery. Trakai Dominican monastery was closed after the 1863-1864 uprising. During the Soviet era the building was given to the KGB and militia and it was used for the imprisonment of political prisoners. In 1986, the architectural complex of Trakai Peninsula Castle and Dominican monastery was transferred to Trakai History Museum. PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI 2014, No. II PIOTR LUCZYS KRZYSZTOF RATAJ Poznań KARAIMS: THE IDENTITY QUESTION* The name Karaims1 derives from karaim, a Hebrew word meaning “the reading one”, “the calling one” and hence Karaims are also called “the people of Scripture”.2 But karaim also means “the detached”, “the disconnected”. The same word in Turk- ish means “black”3, “north”, or “poor”, which suggests Turkic origin of Karaims, namely from Khazars. Karaim dignitaries from the early 20th century popularised that version of the origin of Karaim people, however, that origin is not sufficiently documented.4 Thus the question whether Karaims were the followers of Judaism in Khazaria is frequently asked. In publications on history, such a religious faction is mentioned but it is not exactly clear whether it was of Karaims.5 This is hardly * This article was previously published in “Przegląd Zachodni” 2013, No. 3, pp. 93-116. 1 As many authors argue: “In Polish scientific (and popular) publications, followers of Karaism are referred to as karaimi [Karaims] and not as karaici [Karaites]”. This does not seem, however, to be a consistent terminological convention. Cf. B. Janusz (1927), Karaici w Polsce, Kraków. 2 R.
