UNIVERSITY OF IRVINE UniversityVOL. 7/NO. 2O/FRIDAY. JANUARY 10, 1975 NewCALIFORNIA. ■■B International Women'sYear 1975 by Lavon Gieselman The United Nations has proclaimed 1975 as International Women's Year. The three-fold theme of IWY is as follows: equality of the sexes, totalintegrationof womeninto the social and economic efforts of nations, and recogni- tion of women's contributions towards strengthening world peace. UN goalsare to promotetooliticalawareness of the plight of women They lace severe deprivationof basic opportunities. Thegrowth of women's potential will be seen as beneficial to the developmentof a country's potential. Women's Year came into being because despite decades of progress in eliminating discrimination against women, in no country have they attained lull equality. Growing global recognitionof the importance of women in nation building is another factor contri- buting to the initiation of Women's Year. A chief concern confronting women is the Student Power With Strings Attached? lack of opportunity and inadequate prepara- tion for the full participationof women intheir respective societies. The general tendency in most cultures is to place greater value on males than females: hence, among the 700 million illiterates in the world, the majority are women.In.some areas, ASUCI may high as 85 percent. After 1945, he studied in Prague and worked as an editor and screen- writer, publishing in both Slovak and Czech. In October 1968 Grosman emigrated to Is- rael where he taught at Bar-Ilan University. Vzhledem k tématu díla se práce v teoretické části věnuje historickým okolnostem vzniku Slovenského štátu a represím židovského obyvatelstva. Následně dílo zasazuje do kontextu československé válečné literatury a filmu v 60. letech 20. století a představuje osobnost Ladislava Grosmana a tvůrčí dvojici režisérů Jána Kadára a Elmara Klose.

Notes Introduction 1. In many respects, Blaine’s London feat is part of that shift. Whereas his entombment in ice in New York in 2000 prompted a media focus on his pun- ishing preparations (see Anonymous 2000, 17; Gordon 2000a, 11 and 2000b, 17), his time in the box brought much ridicule and various attempts to make the experience more intense, for instance a man beating a drum to deprive Blaine of sleep and a ‘flash mob’ tormenting him with hamburgers. 2. For some artists, pain is fundamental to the performance, but Franko B uses local anaesthetic, as he considers the end effect more important than the pain. 3. BDSM is regarded by many as less pejorative than sadomasochism; others choose S&M, S/M and SM. Throughout the book I retain each author’s appel- lation but see them fitting into the overarching concept of BDSM. 4. Within the BDSM scene there are specific distinctions and pairings of tops/ bottoms, Doms/subs and Masters/slaves, with increasing levels of control of the latter in each pairing by the former; for instance, a bottom will be the ‘receiver’ or takes the ‘passive’ part in a scene, whilst a sub will surrender control of part of their life to their Dominant. For the purposes of this book, I use the terms top and bottom (except when citing opinions of others) to suggest the respec- tive positions as I am mostly referring to broader notions of control. 5. Stressing its performative qualities, the term ‘scene’ is frequently used for the engagement in actual BDSM acts; others choose the term ‘play’, which as well as stressing its separation from the real has the advantage of indicating it is governed by predetermined rules.
