Early Supports & Services INSPIRING HOPE & INDEPENDENCE FOR OVER 80 YEARS Early Supports & Services “Easter Seals has made all the difference for my twin boys. I don’t know what I would have done without our therapist. I turn to her all the time to ask questions. She eases my worries and shows me simple strategies to help my boys’ development.” — Lyndsey, mother of Ryder & Jaxson ike any new mom, Lyndsey was eager for the birth of her twin babies, Ryder and Jaxson. But with their birth came unanticipated challenges; the boys were born eight weeks early and immediately rushed to the L Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to receive specialized care. Following release from the NICU, doctors also identified that the boys were suffering from Plagiocephaly and Torticollis, conditions that cause asymmetrical distortion of the skull and involuntarily contraction of neck muscles, making the head twist to one side. This typically impacts a number of areas of development. Upon learning the diagnosis, Lyndsey and her husband were left feeling fear- ful for their children’s futures. The NICU staff had referred the family to Easter Seals NH for Early Supports and Services. Lyndsey is so happy they made the connection. The family’s therapist was also instrumental in helping Lyndsey access special grants through the Moore Center for medical equipment not covered by their health insurance. A combination of occupational and physical therapy and the use of helmets have significantly improvedRyder’s and Jaxson’s facial alignment; the boys’ heads and features are now more symmetrical. Like anyproud mom, Lyndsey exclaims, “They are as cute as buttons in their helmets, and now with better facialalignment you can tell they are twins! We feel so lucky to work with Easter Seals NH.” Lyndsey also noted that it helps to be part of a network of families who are facing similar challenges. They share stories, clothes and toys. “We help each other – it’s reassuring for me to know other families are going through the same things as us.” Now the boys are happy, healthy fifteen month old toddlers, exploring their environment and learning new things every day. While they are still in need of on-going therapy, they have come a long way. Both boys are walking and saying their first words. Recently, Lyndsey shared with the boys’ therapist that they are having temper tantrums and was relieved to find out that this is just part of normal development! Lyndsey was delighted to learn that her boys are experiencing things all children go through. With Brenda’s help the family is successfully navigating the “terrible twos” and enjoying their children’s growth and development. Easter Seals NH: Proudly Celebrating 80 Years in 2016! We are proud to once again be partnering with the Easter Seals NH and celebrating with Tmore than 1,500 spectacular wines, while raising critical funding for an organization that provides such meaningful and impactful services throughout the state. The Winter Wine Spectacular has truly become one of the premiere wine events in the entire country. More than 60 international wine personalities, delicious food from some of New Hampshire’s best restaurants and an opportunity to experience some of the best wines in the world make this event a can’t-miss annual celebration. This event is a tremendous opportunity for consumers to learn about and enjoy wine responsibly. The Winter Wine Spectacular is the culmination of New Hampshire Wine Week, which is New England’s ultimate celebration of wine. The week of events was created in 2005 to provide customers the opportunity to sample some of the 7,000 wines available at New Hampshire’s 79 Liquor & Wine Outlets, while also giving customers the chance to meet nationally and internationally acclaimed winemakers at dozens of events throughout the state. During this past week, the biggest names in the wine world participated in intimate wine dinners, bottle signings, wine tastings, and one-of-a-kind seminars. New Hampshire Wine Week and the Winter Wine Spectacular, together with the best prices and unmatched shopping convenience, have helped New Hampshire stand out in the wine world. In fact, the Washington Post called New Hampshire “the best state in America for wine drinkers,” after it scored an A+ on the American Wine Consumer Coalition’s report card. It all comes as the New Hampshire Liquor Commission reported its best sales year ever in 2015, generating $642 million – an increase of $21 million over the previous year. The secret is out: New Hampshire is serious about wine! While wine is the primary focus, tonight’s event has a deeper meaning. As one of Easter Seals NH’s signature fundraisers, the Winter Wine Spectacular raises critical funds to support the organization’s statewide early intervention program, providing much-needed services and therapy for hundreds of children ages three months to three years with a variety of developmental delays and physical disabilities. Thanks to your help, the Winter Wine Spectacular has raised more than $1.2 million for Easter Seals NH over the past decade. Please ask questions of the wine celebrities in attendance. This is your opportunity to sample a vast variety of wines and find those that are perfect for you to purchase. Be sure to try the delicious culinary samplings from New Hampshire’s best restaurants and take a chance at some silent auction prizes. Most importantly, please have a safe and enjoyable evening. Thank you for drinking responsibly, Joseph W. Mollica Chairman, New Hampshire Liquor Commission 2 | Winter Wine Spectacular 2016 u EASTER SEALS NH Please drink responsibly. The data upon which the analysis rests was collected through participant observation as well as qualitative interviews and surveys. The first chapter consists of a brief overview of traditional foodways in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as a summary of the current state of the tourism industry. As well, the methodology which underpins the study is presented. Chapter two examines the historical origins of culinary tourism and the development of the idea in the Canadian context. The chapter ends with a description of Newfoundland and Labrador's current culinary marketing campaign, "A Taste of Newfoundland and Labrador." With particular attention to folklore scholarship, the course of academic attention to foodways and tourism, both separately and in tandem, is documented in chapter three. The second part of the thesis consists of three case studies. Chapter four examines the uses of seal flipper pie in hegemonic discourse about the province and its culture. Fried foods, specifically fried fish, potatoes and cod tongues, provide the starting point for a discussion of changing attitudes toward food, health and the obligations of citizenry in chapter five.
