Mormons and Early Iowa History (1838 to 1858): Eight Distinct Connections WILLIAM G. HARTLEY MORMON CONNECTIONS to Iowa are noted in early Iowa histories, linger in local and family lore, and show up on Iowa's landscapes and maps.1 Evidence of and stories about Mormon wagon ruts, swales, graves, wells, camping sites, cabins, enter prises, and place names are found in the broad swath of south em Iowa counties through which the Mormon Trail and its al ternates passed, and along the I-80 corridor from Iowa City to Council Bluffs. Unfortunately, observers often confuse or con flate the various connections between Mormons and early Iowa history. It is common, for instance, to link all such connections to the two best-known Mormon connections to Iowa: the 1846 wagon companies led by Brigham Young and the 1856-57 handcart brigades. While some Mormon imprints in Iowa do stem from those two groups, others do not.2 In fact, the Mormons had at 1. David R. Crockett: The Nauvoo Temple 5 The Nauvoo Temple: “A Monument of the Saints” David R. Crockett Temple Construction Is Undertaken In August 1840, Joseph Smith announced to the Church members in Nauvoo that the time had again come to build a temple. On 19 January 1841, he recorded a revelation from the Lord commanding the Saints to “build a house to my name” (D&C 124:27). William Weeks was appointed architect and super- intendent of the temple construction. He was guided by Joseph Smith, who said: “I have seen in vision the splendid appearance of that building illuminated, and will have it built according to the pattern shown me.”1 Stone quarries near the city were used. The large stones were roughly cut at the quarries, hauled to the temple lot, and then polished and put into place. On 6 April 1841, a cornerstone ceremony was held. It was a grand celebration, with Joseph Smith presiding. Bands played, the Nauvoo Legion marched, and Sidney Rigdon preached to a congregation of nearly ten thousand people.2 By November 1841, the basement rooms were enclosed, and a temporary roof was constructed. A temporary wooden font resting on twelve wooden oxen was used for baptisms, both for the living and for the dead. By 30 October 1842, the temple walls were four feet high, and a temporary floor was put on the main story. About three thousand people gathered for the first official meeting held in the temple.3 The martyrdom of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum temporarily slowed down construction in June 1844. -

The Nauvoo Music and Concert Hall A Prelude to the Exodus Darrell Babidge n many an evening in 1845, anyone near the corner of Woodruff Oand Young Streets in Nauvoo, Illinois, would have heard music coming from the newly constructed Music and Concert Hall (fig. 1).1 The following year, the music making abruptly stopped as thousands of Nauvoo residents fled from mob violence, abandoned the city, and began their journey westward to the Great Salt Lake. Today on the same corner is an empty grassy area where children often play. This article seeks to tell the history of the Nauvoo Music and Concert Hall. This hall points to the lifeblood of music and community in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints although the hall was used for only a brief time. The people of Nauvoo placed an emphasis on music that was unusual for a frontier town. They also set a standard of providing build- ings for cultural refinement that continues among the Saints today.2 1.
