In , he passed the reins of management of Power Corporation to his sons. Paul Jr. became Chairman and Co-Chief Executive O cer and André became Deputy Chairman, President and Co-Chief Executive O cer. Paul continued to serve as a Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee. He remained controlling shareholder until his passing. As signi cant as his business achievements were, Paul possessed many outstanding qualities which were an even fuller measure of the man. First and foremost was his deep, joyful love for his family. He adored Jackie for her spirit, style and huge heart. She was his best friend and most trusted partner. Of all his accomplishments he was proudest of each of his children and what they in turn have accomplished as ne members of society. ose fortunate enough to have worked with him were inspired by his strategic acumen, his personal integrity and his mentorship. ose who knew him as a friend will never forget his extraordinary zest for e Honourable Paul Desmarais, P.C., C.C., O.Q. life, his irrepressible sense of fun, and his unpretentious nature. Prime ministers, presidents, premiers and mayors sought his counsel, which was invariably practical as well as wise. People from all parts of the world – and all walks of life enjoyed his legendary hospitality and infectious charm. Paul loved history and politics. He loved arts, architecture and music. Together with Jackie, he was renowned for his generosity to a host of educational, cultural and community organizations, particularly those relating to the conditions of the homeless. A great believer in the value of education, he served as DESMARAIS, PAUL GUY–Passed away peacefully at Domaine Laforest, Sagard, in the region of Charlevoix, Chancellor of Memorial University, received honorary degrees from a dozen universities, and was awarded Quebec, on October , , at the age of after a full and happy life of family, friends, business, philanthropy, the University of Ottawa’s Distinguished Canadian Leadership Award. -

THE 2005–2006 FEDERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN: A STORY IN POLLS By Claire Durand and François Yale, Department of sociology Université de Montréal The advantage of having a significant number of polls during an election campaign is that they either validate or invalidate certain spur-of-the-moment impressions. Three moments or events marked the 2005–2006 federal election campaign: the first debates (on December 15 in French and December 16 in English), followed closely by Steven Harper’s speech to the Quebec City board of trade on December 19; the “Goodale affair,” which occurred on December 28, between Christmas and New Year’s; and finally, the second debate (January 9 in English and January 10 in French), which coincided with the launch of a book on Option Canada by Normand Lester and Robin Philpot (Les secrets d’Option Canada, Ed. Des Intouchables, Montréal, 2006), that alleged hidden financing of the “No” side during the 1995 Quebec referendum campaign. In this article, we compare the trends in voting intentions in Ontario and Quebec for the three main parties, and conclude with a look at the situation in Canada as a whole. Through time-series analyses using the poll results, we can examine whether voting intentions changed following the identified events. To create the series, the results of each poll, along with the number of respondents to each, were distributed over the number of days the poll was in the field. For tracking polls, this was done every three days to eliminate redundancy, since the two polling firms, Strategic Counsel and SES Research, used a three-day interval. -

Copyright 2013, The Concord Review, Inc., all rights reserved THE ROOTS OF FRENCH CANADIAN NATIONALISM AND THE QUEBEC SEPARATIST MOVEMENT Iris Robbins-Larrivee Abstract Since Canada’s colonial era, relations between its Fran- cophones and its Anglophones have often been fraught with high tension. This tension has for the most part arisen from French discontent with what some deem a history of religious, social, and economic subjugation by the English Canadian majority. At the time of Confederation (1867), the French and the English were of almost-equal population; however, due to English dominance within the political and economic spheres, many settlers were as- similated into the English culture. Over time, the Francophones became isolated in the province of Quebec, creating a densely French mass in the midst of a burgeoning English society—this led to a Francophone passion for a distinct identity and unrelent- ing resistance to English assimilation. The path to separatism was a direct and intuitive one; it allowed French Canadians to assert their cultural identities and divergences from the ways of the Eng- lish majority.
