ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. In addition to the Malukans, there were two foreign groups who were essential to the successful integration of the local trade networks: the and the Chinese. -

1 BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Dasar Pemikiran Bangsa Indonesia sejak dahulu sudah dikenal sebagai bangsa pelaut yang menguasai jalur-jalur perdagangan. Sebagai bangsa pelaut maka pengetahuan kita akan teknologi perkapalan Nusantara pun seharusnya kita ketahui. Catatan-catatan sejarah serta bukti-bukti tentang teknologi perkapalan Nusantara pada masa klasik memang sangatlah minim. Perkapalan Nusantara pada masa klasik, khususnya pada masa kerajaan Hindu-Buddha tidak meninggalkan bukti lukisan-lukisan bentuk kapalnya, berbeda dengan bangsa Eropa seperti Yunani dan Romawi yang bentuk kapal-kapal mereka banyak terdapat didalam lukisan yang menghiasi benda porselen. Penemuan bangkai-bangkai kapal yang berasal dari abad ini pun tidak bisa menggambarkan lebih lanjut bagaimana bentuk aslinya dikarenakan tidak ditemukan secara utuh, hanya sisa-sisanya saja. Sejak kedatangan bangsa Eropa ke Nusantara pada abad ke 16, bukti-bukti mengenai perkapalan yang dibuat dan digunakan di Nusantara mulai terbuka. Catatan-catatan para pelaut Eropa mengenai pertemuan mereka dengan kapal- kapal Nusantara, serta berbagai lukisan-lukisan kota-kota pelabuhan di Nusantara yang juga dibuat oleh orang-orang Eropa. Sejak abad ke-17, di Eropa berkembang seni lukis naturalistis, yang coba mereproduksi keadaan sesuatu obyek dengan senyata mungkin; gambar dan lukisan yang dihasilkannya membahas juga pemandangan-pemandangan kota, benteng, pelabuhan, bahkan pemandangan alam 2 di Asia, di mana di sana-sini terdapat pula gambar perahu-perahu Nusantara.1 Catatan-catatan Eropa ini pun memuat nama-nama dari kapal-kapal Nusantara ini, yang ternyata sebagian masih ada hingga sekarang. Dengan menggunakan cacatan-catatan serta lukisan-lukisan bangsa Eropa, dan membandingkan bentuk kapalnya dengan bukti-bukti kapal yang masih digunakan hingga sekarang, maka kita pun bisa memunculkan kembali bentuk- bentuk kapal Nusantara yang digunakan pada abad-abad 16 hingga 18. -

[email protected] Abstract Southeast Asia was known for its seafarers. Indeed, long before the Portuguese arrived in Asian waters, the seafarers had been sailing over the oceans for thousands of miles without a proper compass or written charts. Arena Wati or Muhammad Dahlan bin Abdul Biang is well-known author in Malaysia. He is one of the national laureates of Malay literature. Before he ventured into the world of creative writings, he was a seafarer since the age of 17. He originates from Makassar, an island of seafarers in Indonesia. His vast experiences as a seafarer, who learned and practiced the celestial navigational skills of the Makassar people, have become the important ingredient of his creative writings. Celestial navigation is a navigation of a naturalist that is based on natural elements such as wind direction, wave patterns, ocean currents, cloud formation and so on. Nevertheless, not much research has been doned on his navigational skills as reflected in his works, especially in the contact of local knowledge. As a result, this paper will venture into the celestial navigation and its relationship with the local knowledge. Selected works of Arena Wati, which consists of a memoir and two novels, will be analyzed using textual analysis. The result of this study reveals that the selected works of Arena Wati shows the importance of celestial navigation as part of the local knowledge. -

BAB 1 PENGENALAN ______________________________________________________________________ 1.1 Latar Belakang Masalah Kajian 1.1.1 Peperangan Dunia seringkali diancam dengan pergaduhan dan peperangan, sama ada peperangan antarabangsa, negara, agama, etnik, suku kaum, bahkan wujud juga peperangan yang berlaku antara anak-beranak dan kaum keluarga. Perang yang di maksudkan adalah satu pertempuran ataupun dalam erti kata lain merupakan perjuangan (jihad). Kenyataan ini turut di perakui oleh Sun Tzu dalam karyanya yang menyatakan bahawa peperangan itu adalah urusan negara yang penting untuk menentukan kelangsungan hidup atau kemusnahan sesebuah negara, maka setiap jenis peperangan itu perlu diselidiki terlebih dahulu matlamatnya.1 Di samping itu, perang juga sering dianggap oleh sekalian manusia bahawa ia merupakan satu perbalahan yang melibatkan penggunaan senjata sehingga mampu mengancam nyawa antara sesama umat manusia.2 Ini menunjukkan bahawa penggunaan senjata merupakan elemen penting dalam sebuah peperangan. Perang merupakan salah satu daripada kegiatan manusia kerana ia meliputi pelbagai sudut kehidupan. Peredaran zaman serta berkembangnya sesebuah tamadun telah menuntut seluruh daya upaya manusia untuk berjuang mempertahankan negara terutamanya dalam peperangan. This study uses the historical method, which explains a problem based on a historical perspective with its stages consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study show that the maritime shipping and trade of Mandar people covered the entire archipelago so that they were known as an accomplished seaman. They did not only play an important role in building up the archipelago maritime network but also revived the port and people activities related to maritime trade. Mandar commercial shipping is also a connector between islands, thus make people felt closer who was fragmented in the archipelago. Therefore, the Mandar people play an important contribution in knitting Indonesian integration through the maritime tradition. To become a maritime nation, a nautical culture is needed and Mandar seamen have strengthened the foundation in developing Indonesia as the world’s maritime axis. I have never been more excited about getting an injection than I was when I received a message informing me of my eligibility to sign up for the Covid vaccine. My hope is that we all get vaccinated soon for our own protection and that of our loved ones as Singapore and the world gradually opens up. Docent training resumed with the Kampong Gelam Heritage Trails’ training starting earlier this year. Fifteen trainees participated in the programme, which ran from 22 February to 9 April. Congratulations to the training team and the new docents on successfully completing the course while following all the safe distancing guidelines. We hope to conduct docent training for several other museums this year. The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), the National Museum of Singapore (NMS) and the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) will commence theirs on 13 September 2021, while Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall will launch its session in February 2022. Our Overall Heads of Docent Training, Aditi Kaul and Charlotte Dawson, along with the co-heads of the respective museums, shared detailed information about what to expect from the training during a Zoom Public Information Meeting (PIM) held on 23 March. The PIM was attended by about 180 people. Applications for training are now open and can be accessed via the FOM website, www.fom.sg. For those of you who may have missed the PIM but are interested in knowing more about the 2021-22 programme, a video recording of the session is also available on our website. -

The Karangasem leadership was able to expand into Lombok and large parts of northern and central Bali, while gen- erally avoiding confrontation with the Dutch East India Company. They encountered a range of ethnic groups and endeavoured to play out the Dutch and the British inter- ests against each other. In spite of its regional importance, prior to 1800 Karangasem is poorly documented. The article explores ways of reading different categories of Euro- pean and indigenous sources against each other. Although fragmentary, they yield information about strategic concerns, economic underpinnings of expansion, ethnic- ity, and cultural and ritual issues. A combination of internal and external factors, including Dutch policies in the East Indies, enabled Karangasem to pursue a successful political expansion in the shadow of the Company. TUGAS AKHIR BONDAN KARTIKA AHMAD IBRAHIM (2015310028) BAB II TINJAUAN PUSTAKA 2.1 KAPAL PINISI Menurut legenda, kapal Pinisi pertama dibuat oleh Sawerigading, seorang putra mahkota Kerajaan Luwu untuk berlayar menuju negeri Tiongkok pada abad 14. Tujuan pelayaran tersebut adalah untuk merantau dan kemudian meminang putri Tiongkok yang bernama We Cudai. Pada perjalanannya pulang ke Sulawesi perahu ini berhadapan dengan badai dan pecah menjadi tiga dan terdampar di tiga wilayah: Ara, Tanah Lemo dan Bira. Tiga wilayah ini yang dikatakan sebagai cikal bakal pembuatan kapal Pinisi yang menggunakan pecahan kapal Sawerigading. Berdasarkan catatan sejarah, Pinisi diperkenalkan sebagai “peeneeseek” pertama dibuat pada 1840-an oleh beberapa orang Prancis dan Jerman yang terdampar di Trengganu Malaysia. Mereka lalu menetap dan menikah dengan warga lokal. Atas permintaan Sultan Baginda Omar dibuatkan kapal menyerupai kapal layar Barat modern. Kapal layar ini menjadi gambaran asal bagi kapal layar baru yang disebut Pinas, mungkin berasal dari kata pinasse, merujuk istilah Prancis dan Jerman waktu itu untuk kapal layar berukuran sedang. Secara tradisional, kapal Indonesia diklasifikasikan dalam dua cara, yaitu dengan istilah tali-temali dan layarnya serta nama yang berbeda untuk bentuk dan jenis lambung. Dengan demikian, perbedaan dalam penamaan kapal tradisional, yang jelas bagi pelaut atau pembuat kapal Indonesia, dapat sedikit rumit bagi orang awam. Jenis layar asli Indonesia adalah layar Tanjaq ('berlayar'). Konon representasi tertua terlihat di beberapa ukiran di dinding candi Borobudur abad ke- 9 yang terkenal, dan sumber-sumber Cina, Arab dan Eropa sejak masa kontak asing yang paling awal berbicara tentang Tanjaq persegi panjang yang aneh sebagai layar khas 'Kepulauan Bawah' angin'. -

They have played a major role in indigenous shipping, and since the second half of the nineteenth century their importance in this field has been second only to that of the Bugis and Makassarese. With their strong maritime orientation and outward economy, the coastal Madurese contrast strongly with the agricultural orientation of their near neighbours, the Javanese and the Balinese. The first part of this thesis presents the Madurese in historical context vis-à-vis the Javanese and the maritime groups of Sulawesi. It then considers the various historical and cultural-ecological factors which predisposed the coastal Madurese toward seafaring as a livelihood, and which enabled them to eclipse their former rivals along the north coast of Java. The main seafaring centres of Madura during the twentieth century are identified, with these being in three distinct locations: the northwest coast, the southwest coast, and the eastern islands of Madura.
