WILES1 Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources, 192 Dairy Road, Mangilao, Guam 96913, USA Abstract—This paper documents the occurrence of the gecko Perochirus cf. scutellatus at Ulithi Atoll in the Caroline Islands, where it is possibly restricted to a single islet. This represents just the third known location for the species and extends its range by 975 km. Information gathered to date suggests the species was once more widespread and is perhaps sensitive to human-induced habitat change. The genus Perochirus is comprised of three extant species of gecko native to Micronesia and Vanuatu and an extinct form from Tonga (Brown 1976, Pregill 1993, Crombie & Pregill 1999). The giant Micronesian gecko (P. scutellatus) is the largest member of the genus and was until recently considered endemic to Kapingamarangi Atoll in southern Micronesia, where it is common on many islets (Buden 1998a, 1998b). Crombie & Pregill (1999) reported two specimens resem- bling this species from Fana in the Southwest Islands of Palau; these are consid- ered to be P. cf. scutellatus pending further comparison with material from Kapingamarangi (R. Crombie, pers. comm.). Herein, I document the occurrence of P. cf. scutellatus from an additional site in Micronesia. During a week-long fruit bat survey at Ulithi Atoll in Yap State, Caroline Islands in March 1986 (Wiles et al. 1991), 14 of the atoll’s larger islets com- prising 77% of the total land area were visited. Fieldwork was conducted pri- marily from dawn to dusk, with four observers spending much of their time walking transects through the forested interior of each islet. -

Source: Wikipedia at http://tinyurl.com/nowc5hg. n the morning of December 7, 1941, Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) aircraft set out on one of the most famous operations in military Ohistory: a surprise air attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawai`i. The attack was devised and fashioned by Admiral Yamamoto, whose entire military career seems to have been leading to this very moment. Yamamoto was a naval officer who appreciated and under- stood the strategic and technological advantages of naval aviation. This essay will explore Yamamoto’s military career in the context of Imperial Japan’s aggressive expansion into Asia beginning in the 1890s and abruptly ending with Japan’s formal surrender on September 2, 1945, to the US and its Allies. In 1901, he passed the Impe- rial Naval Academy entrance exams with the objective of becoming a naval officer. Yamamoto genuinely respected the West—an attitude not shared by his academy peers. The IJN was significantly influenced by the British Royal Navy (RN), but for utilitarian reasons: mastery of technology, strategy, and tactics. -

THE WEEPING MONUMENT: A PRE AND POST DEPOSITIONAL SITE FORMATION STUDY OF THE USS ARIZONA by Valerie Rissel April, 2012 Director of Thesis: Dr. Brad Rodgers Major Department: Program in Maritime History and Archaeology Since its loss on December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona has been slowly leaking over 9 liters of oil per day. This issue has brought about conversations regarding the stability of the wreck, and the possibility of defueling the 500,000 to 600,000 gallons that are likely residing within the wreck. Because of the importance of the wreck site, a decision either way is one which should be carefully researched before any significant changes occur. This research would have to include not only the ship and its deterioration, but also the oil’s effects on the environment. This thesis combines the historical and current data regarding the USS Arizona with case studies of similar situations so a clearer picture of the future of the ship can be obtained. Tracing the Life of Isoroku Yamamoto, a Man of Affection and Integrity AdmiralAdmiral IsorokuIsoroku YamamotoYamamoto MemorialMemorial MuseumMuseum Isoroku Takano, born to the family of a Confucian scholar in 1884, was an intelligent youth and respected Benjamin Franklin since his junior high school days. He studied very hard and acquired a broad knowledge of various things. Becoming the successor of the family of Tatewaki Yamamoto, a councilor of the feudal lord in the old Nagaoka Domain, Isoroku married a daughter of a samurai family of the old Aizu Feudal Domain. While mastering the arts of both the pen and the sword, working with a spirit of fortitude and vigor, and following a motto that showed the spirit of Nagaoka (“always have the spirit of being on a battlefield”), he focused his attention on petroleum and aviation early on in his career. Inspired by Lindbergh’s non-stop transatlantic flight, he especially stressed the signifi- cance of aviation. At the outbreak of the Pacific War, his foresight about aviation was proven to the world. However, Yamamoto firmly opposed the outbreak of the war. Taking the risk upon himself, he strongly opposed the Japan- Germany-Italy Triple Alliance, stating that his spirit would not be defeated even if his physical body were destroyed. His way of thinking may have been a direct result of his sincere love and affection for his hometown and the people. Despite his objections to joining the war, Yamamoto commanded the unprecedented battle as the Commander-in- Front View of the Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto Memorial Museum Chief of the Combined Fleet. -

Investigation of Abandoned WW II Wrecks in Palau Tomo Ishimura1 Abstract Over forty Japanese vessels were sunken in the water of Palau during WWII. Some wrecks sunk in the shallow water at a depth of 20 meters or less and were salvaged. Other wrecks at 30 meters depth or more still remain and are legally protected by the authority of Palau Government but are seriously threatened by illegal treasure hunters. Initial efforts to identify human remains of Japanese soldiers were made in 2005. As part of an archaeology advisory team for the Japanese Government I carried out underwater surveys of sunken WWII vessels in Palau. In 2010 and 2011, I conducted investigations of the WWII vessels again, together with on-shore research on sites and features associated with the Japanese occupation period, funded by the Takanashi Foundation for Arts and Archaeology (Japan). The research revealed that the most of the vessels sunken in Palau were not genuine military vessels of Japanese Imperial Navy or Army but converted vessels originally built for non-combat purposes. These vessels were slow in speed and not well-equipped for combat activity. Most of them were destroyed by American aerial bombing on March 30th 1944. The evening before (March 29th) the main force of the Japanese Combined Fleet, including its flagship Musashi, retreated from Palau. It is clear that the vessels left in Palau were abandoned as a “third wheel” of the Combined Fleet. These abandoned-converted vessels include cargo carriers, tankers, whaling boats and fishing boats. This implies that Japanese troops were experiencing a difficult and desperate campaign at that time. -

It is not an official Navy release but it is a factual account verified by your commanding officer and it may be published in hometown newspapers or in plant, office, or school papers. Dear Folks: Now that the war is over, I can tell you something of my part in it during my tour of duty on the U.S.S. BUCYRUS VICTORY (AK-234). This ship has been commended by the Commander Amphibious Group Seven for the important role it played in the Okinawa Operation. We were up there twice, once at the very beginning of the assault, and again when the suicidal resistance of the Japanese was at its height. We carried thousands of tons of ammunition to the anchorage in Kerama Retto, which is a small group of islands just west of Okinawa, and issued it to battleships, cruisers and destroyers. That cargo worried us a little ( to put it mildly ) during the 73 times we were at general quarters and Japanese Kamikaze planes were in the sky somewhere above us. From the very beginning our ship was designated an ammunition cargo ship. She and nine sister merchant ships were taken over from the U, S. Maritime Commission for the specific purposes of carrying ammunition to the fleet and issuing it to the fighting ships thereof. However, we did carry one load of general, non-explosive cargo. After commissioning at Richmond, California, and a brief shakedown at San Pedro, California, the ship was loaded at Port Hueneme with a general cargo which we took to Pearl Harbor and discharged there. -
