Silk (MA Cantab) Welcome to our prospective students- The aims and objectives of St Trannian’s are to turn a gentleman into a lady in both appearance and manner. We offer full make overs and training in all aspects of "looking and feeling like a gurl" with regular assessment and progress checks at tutorials. I do know that our policy of no male clothes being worn by gentlemen and staff whilst on College premises- though strict-has an immediate impact on the training we offer-and also encapsulates the ethos we hold as a guiding principle in our curriculum. As you will see, when you visit us, we are all dressed for the part in regulation silk, satin and nylon lingerie with the sheer stockings that we wear all the time as we introduce our gentlemen students to the art and fashion of becoming gurls...Are your seams straight ladies? Briefly here are some "abiding principles" that MUST be observed at all times and in order not to transgress our Dress Code. Outer day wear and uniform whilst at College lectures and subsequently: All students will dress in approved black silk lingerie under a white or ivory silk blouse and black satin skirt. Stockings will be black or off black and suspenders will be worn either on a suspender belt or basque. High heels will also be worn EXCEPT for games and P.E. when students will wear black silk shorts and a thin blouse over bra, silk panties and depending on the activity- stockings. Evening wear will be according to activity and dinner will be sat in gowns of approved style and fabric with strict lingerie guidance. For punishment "punishment panties" Vanity Fair glossy nylon full cut will be worn by gurls about to be punished and they will be punished in front of the college at Assembly. Miss Silk - Headmistress 2 | P a g e Curriculum Our curriculum is, in essence, that of the "finishing school" of old except that we are turning gentlemen into ladies rather than girls into the latter. The core curriculum is an intensive year of teaching and assessment based on the College's main precept which is to transform gentlemen who wish to look and feel like ladies into just this-a fully fashioned dressed and trained gurl. Many still confuse cross dressing with transvestism. There will be no problem with that after our training is complete!!! I will now briefly outline our course and teaching for our first year curriculum. Term 1: Becoming ladylike This is the introduction to everything that goes with looking like a lady from dressing to decorum and make up. Term 2: Dressing Decorum and the Intricacies of looking feminine Make up dressing fashion deportment and keeping fit with teaching on how to be a convincing lady rather than a male with not a clue. Term 3: going out in the world in our new mode Finals and preparation for going out dressed and being yourself-feeling comfortable when dressed and the beginnings of social integration and extra-curricular activities. We expect students to graduate on the basis of both written and practical assessment-for example all students will have a make-up exam, dressing exam and deportment practical’s. Successful students will be awarded a DIP. TRANS. as recognition of their transformation and success on the course. 3 | P a g e Discipline There will be frequent spot checks by the Head Mistress or her Deputy to see that gurls are wearing their slip and stockings. Any infringements of uniform regulations will be severely punished. Gurls who get over excited by wearing silky nylon lingerie will be punished. Gurls will keep a special pair of floral Vanity Fair punishment panties ready for such occasions. 4 | P a g e Uniform – Junior Gurls In the first two years of their time at St Trannian’s the gurls are juniors. Our junior gurls dress from the inside out in the silkiest black lingerie. Lingerie must be black and consist of: • Black lacy bra (small breast fillers are permitted for developing gurls) • Black lacy suspender belt • Black bikini knickers (these may be sheer on the back) • Sheer black stockings 15 dernier or less (lace top or plain) • Knee length black waist slip with a minimum of a 2” lacy hem • All lingerie must be made of nylon, silk or satin. • NO COTTON, NO THICK TIGHTS, NO HOLDUPS • Suitable suppliers are: Mark’s and Spencer’s, EBay or M & Co. 5 | P a g e Winter Uniform In winter months (Oct to March) it is permissible for Junior gurls to wear a silky camisole, in a skin tone colour, over the bra. The camisole must have a lacy band over the bust and thin adjustable spaghetti straps. Suitable supplier is Ebay. 6 | P a g e Blouse and tie A short sleeved white school blouse will be worn with the red school tie. The top button of the school blouse must be done up and the tie correctly knotted. In very hot weather the Head Mistress, Miss Silk, may give permission for the blouse and tie to be omitted. Suitable suppliers: Mark’s and Spencers (blouse) and the school shop for the tie. 7 | P a g e Shoes Shoes will be black with a maximum of a 3” heel. They can be court shoes or peep toe. Gurls should check every morning that the shoe is fitted comfortably to their foot. Suitable suppliers: Mark’s and Spencer’s, Tesco or Ebay. 8 | P a g e Dress / gymslip A black, sleeveless dress, in the style of a gymslip will be worn over the school blouse. The dress may have a zip or buttons up the front. Suitable suppliers: Tesco. 9 | P a g e PE Kit For Physical Education and dance gurls will remove their white blouse, tie and dress. They will then take of their waist slip. PE kit consists of black silk shorts, a black silk blouse and black ballet shoes. In winter gurls may keep their camisole on. Suppliers: Sainsbury or Tesco 10 | P a g e Uniform – Senior Gurls Gurls become Seniors in year 3 and 4 of their time at St Trannian’s. Seniors also wear black lingerie, but there are some subtle differences. • Black sheer bra (with large breast inserts, which should show through the bra) • Black French knickers with wide lacy hems • Black lacy suspender belt • All lingerie to be made of nylon, satin or silk • NO COTTON, NO TIGHTS, NO HOLD UPS • Suitable suppliers: Marks and Spencer’s or Ebay. 11 | P a g e Stockings will be sheer black 7 denier nylon stockings, classic seams with key hole tops. Shoes will be black, court or open toed with a minimum of a 3-inch heel. Suitable suppliers: Gio’s from Stocking HQ. 12 | P a g e A black full slip will be worn over the panties, bra, suspenders and stockings. 13 | P a g e A long sleeved sheer white blouse will be worn. The black slip should be seen through the sheer blouse. Suitable suppliers include EBay. 14 | P a g e The black skirt shall be made of satin or nylon, will be knee length and shall be worn tightly. Suspender clasp should be seen through the tight skirt. 15 | P a g e Uniform – Prefects On special occasions, such as Founders Day, Open Evening, the prefects will be given permission by the Head Mistress to wear white high heels, white gloves and a black or white waist slip. The waist slip will have a wide lacy hem and a lace edged split of at least 12 inches. They may also wear pink panties instead of the regulation black knickers. Suitable suppliers: Mark’s and Spencer’s or Ebay. 16 | P a g e SUPPLIERS The most reliable supplier for slips, half and full slips, as well as French Knickers is Marks and Spencer’s. Larger branches still have suitable lingerie that meets the rigorous demands for St Trannian’s school uniform. Ebay, Sainsbury and Tesco can supplier some of the items but items held in stock is variable.     http://akroterion.journals.ac.za medEia – A SOUTH AFRICAN MEDEA AT THE START OF THE 21ST CENTURY Betine van Zyl Smit (University of Nottingham) Medea is ubiquitous on the stages of the modern world. From Greece and continental Europe, the British Isles and North America the unforgettable protagonist of Euripides’ tragedy has travelled further, to South America, Japan and as far as South Africa. The earliest recorded performances of Medea in South Africa seem to be burlesques that were very popular in Cape Town in the mid 19th century1. These shows were probably attended by British expatriates who, although they were far from home, were being offered fare that would be familiar to Londoners of the same period. In fact Robert Brough’s burlesque of Legouvé’s adaptation of the Medea (Medea, or, the Best of Mothers with a Brute of a Husband), which was a great success in London in 1856,2 was apparently as popular in Cape Town where it was staged repeatedly in 1858 and during the next decade3. This illustrates the close bond between entertainment in London and the chief city of a far-off colony. During the 20th century, various translations, into either of the official languages, English or Afrikaans4, of Euripides’ Medea or, often, Anouilh’s adaptation, were staged. Gradually, and more markedly from the 1970s onwards, as was the case with the performing arts in general, a stronger local element was introduced into the productions5. Thus for example, in 1977, Barney Simon directed a multiracial cast in his version of Grillparzer’s Medea at The Space6, a theatre famous for its support for alternative productions.

(pp. 317-332) CHAPTER EIGHTEEN FOSTERING COMPLICIT FEMININITY: EPOCH, EDUCATION AND THE YOUNG FEMALE BODY Majella McSharry and Brendan Walsh Introduction: Recent Practices and Historical Antecedents Prior to 1878, post-primary schooling in Ireland was dominated by religious provision and throughout the 20th Century Catholic congregations, in particular, operated the majority of such schools. As we see below, there is much evidence to support the position that young, female bodies were heavily regulated in these schools. Historically, such regulation was as much a result of wider social constraint as it was particular to Catholicism. However, given that those girls who secured post-primary schooling before the advent of free education in 1966, and the majority of those that have passed through secondary schooling since then, attended Catholic convent institutions, they provide a useful starting place in surveying the regulation of the young, female body. They also allow us to identify to what extent traditional notions of femininity have succumbed to more hyper-sexualised versions of young women in a world where the body as commodity has become normalized. This chapter seeks to explore the regulation of the schoolgirl body within the Irish secondary school landscape. In doing so it describes historic practices that reinforced stereotypical behaviours for young women of school and university-going age and discusses how these practices find striking resonances in contemporary schooling. Our focus is on one aspect of regulation – that of the body. Through the body, that form by which we so often seek self- definition and are defined, that to which we are so intimately bound, regulation becomes immediate and in some instances all-encompassing.
