[email protected] Abstract This study highlights a number of different aspects regarding uniforms and dress codes in the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden. The study comprises three parts: a quantitative comparison of GCSE pass rates for schools in the UK that do and do not have school uniforms, a qualitative survey study of Scottish High School pupils' perceptions about their uniform and a qualitative interview study of Swedish teachers, administrators and pupils about their school dress, rules regarding school dress and school uniforms. Regarding whether uniforms improved academic results by comparing GCSE pass rates in the UK we were unable to find conclusive evidence to suggest that schools which had uniform policies performed significantly better than other schools. Regarding Scottish pupils’ perceptions of their uniforms, pupils from lower-educated backgrounds were more likely to perceive that they were told off by teachers about not wearing the correct dress. When asked whether pupils felt more equal compared to their peers, those from lower-educated background were more likely to think that uniforms do not help to level out class difference compared to pupils from better educated backgrounds. Regarding bullying, even though uniforms existed at the school studied bullying due to what pupils wore to school still existed and pupils perceived that bullying due to other factors such as physical appearance also occurred.

    2 February 2018 From the Principal’s Desk Kia ora Welcome to Menzies College 2018. This is the first newsletter for the school year and from now on will be printed fortnightly. On Wednesday morning we welcomed 67 new students and five new staff into the school with a wonderful Powhiri. It was so heartening to again, feel the spirit of the school as our other students made everyone welcome and ensured new students comfortably found their way around their new environment. The school starts the year with a roll of 323 which is a very pleasing number and a slight increase on last year but a lot more than six years ago. Thank you to the parents/caregivers that also attended on Wednesday. We look forward to working with all new parents in our community to make the best possible gains with your child. We are still finalising student and staff timetables and problem clashes will iron themselves out in the next week. An early indication of NCEA results show we are on par with expectations. The difference this year is the high quality of the results from those who passed. Our students gained 133 subject endorsements last year and 37 overall NCEA Level Endorsements, almost twice as many as the year before which at that time had been our best. We are really pleased that students value the importance of endorsements and the benefits they bring when looking for employment or tertiary study opportunities. We will host our GF Walker Awards next Friday 9 February from 2.20pm in the hall to celebrate the success of these students and also present House and Committee Leaders with their badges.

Each and every day, members of our community are guided by the values set forth in this Handbook, focused on the deep and abiding love and respect we have for God, for His creation, and for one another. “Family, School, and Church united in the education and support of each Child” are central words in the active life of our school. Indeed, as you walk our halls and talk to members of our community, you will see that these words rise above mere rhetoric as they take root in our lives and in our relationships with each other. The contents of this Handbook should serve as a compass by which we all chart a yearly course to live, learn, play, and grow together in a safe and stimulating school environment. The core values and essential agreements described in these pages are the guiding principles that help us to encourage and nurture not only our students, but all members of our community and, ultimately, our world. Presbyterian School has staked its reputation on a fierce commitment to its mission and philosophy. Each day charismatic adults among us teach our students to think critically, communicate effectively, and develop their own strengths and talents.
