Species that hybridize to form allopolyploids may become extinct, yet may be discovered and characterized through the continued existence and expression of their genomes in their allopolyploid descendants. For purposes of nomenclature, these genomically preserved plants (GPPs) form a third category of plants, along with recent plants and fossils, with which they share certain kinds of characters. GPPs are essential to understanding the phylogeny of some species complexes and can be included as OTUs in phenetic and phylogenetic analyses. -

Harry had written about problems which he was experiencing with his fern collection and his letter was dated 24 June 1989. We don't know how the letter was overlooked, it just turned up! We have wrifiten an apology to Mr Franz and tried at this late stage to assess the cause of the problems raised. We have also asked Irene Cullen and her fellow members in South Eastern Queensland to provide any possible advice or assistance to Mr Franz from witlin their knowledge and resources. We only hope that the ferns are still alive and growing. An extract from Mr Franz's letter and the relevant parts from our delayed response follow, as these comments may be of general interest. Mr Franz wrote as follows: I am wondering if you can give me any information on fungal diseases of ferns. Things have been going really well till this last year. I have two types of problem. (1) Pellaea paradoxa Leaves slowly turning brown from leaflet tips, almost completely defoliating some plants. I have repotted some plants to see if it might be a nutrition problem. Plants are still showing some new growth. -

Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -

In July 2013, a total of 86 full floristic and 105 rapid floristic sites were sampled across the island, based on a stratified random sampling design. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering strategy (Flexible UPGMA) and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity coefficient with default beta, along with nearest neighbour analysis to identify anomalous site allocations, was used to analyze the floristic data. In total 33 vegetation communities were delineated and mapped: 19 mapping units from the full floristic analysis; 7 variants identified within five of the above 19 groups; 3 mapping units from analysis of canopy- only floristic data; and 4 mapping units recognised in previous studies that are mapped but were not sampled in this survey. -

Ne were Geoff ahd Ann Long, Qllan and Moreen Noollett, Roy and Beatrice Duncan and Calder and Keith Chaffey. Our leader was Ian Hutton who gave us his generous and unstinting help, and the benefit of his enormous knowledge of the flora and fauna of Lord Howe Island. Anyone interested in Lord Howe Island must have a copy of Ian‘s book, ”Lord Howe Island” in which he discusses the natural history flora and fauna of the Island. He also describes most trees, shrubs and Climbers with a key. There is also a fern list. The new edition to appear shortly will describe all discovered ferns as well as other expanded Chapters. His ”Birds of Lord Howe Island Past’and Present" is also a must. Both books are obtainable from him c/o P.O. Box 6367. Coffs Harbour Plaza. New, 2450. Ne sighted and identified specimens of all except two of the 180 native trees, shrubs and climbers, including 57 endemic species. Some of us were especially interested in the ferns. Of the 56 species we found 51 of which 26 were endemic. -

Amalia Scataglini1 Received: 20 July 2017 /Accepted: 22 April 2018 /Published online: 5 May 2018 # Gesellschaft für Biologische Systematik 2018 Abstract Cheilanthoid ferns (Cheilanthoideae sensu PPG 1 2016) constitute an important group within the Pteridaceae and are cosmopolitan in distribution. In South America, there are 155 species distributed in 13 genera, among which the largest are Adiantopsis (35), Cheilanthes (27), and Doryopteris (22). Most of the cheilanthoid species are morphologically adapted to grow in arid to semi-arid conditions and show convergent evolution, which has implied difficulties in defining the genera throughout their taxonomic history (Copeland 1947,Tryon&Tryon1973,Gastony&Rollo 1995, 1998,KirkpatrickSystematic Botany, 32:504–518, 2007, Rothfels et al. Taxon, 57: 712–724, 2008). Here, we sequenced two plastid markers (rbcL + trnL-F) of 33 South American cheilanthoid species, most of which have not been included in phylogenetic analyses previously. The South American species were analyzed together with South African and Australasian Cheilanthes and representatives of related cheilanthoid genera. The phylogenetic analysis showed that most Cheilanthes species are related to the genus Hemionitis, constituting different groups according to their distribu- tion; moreover, three species—C. hassleri, C. pantanalensis,andC. obducta—appear as the sister clade of Hemionitis. Cheilanthes micropteris, the type species, is strongly supported in a clade with Australasian Cheilanthes plus five South American Cheilanthes species, all of which show a reduction in the number of spores per sporangium; this feature would be a synapomorphy for core Cheilanthes s.s. -

ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2515-6509 * Corresponding author: [email protected] Significance Statement Knowledge of how thermal tolerances are distributed across major clades and biogeographic regions is important for understanding biome formation and climate change responses. However, most research has concentrated on animals, and we lack equivalent knowledge for other organisms. Here we compile global data on heat and cold tolerances of plants, showing that many, but not all, broad-scale patterns known from animals are also true for plants. Importantly, failing to account simultaneously for influences of local environments, and evolutionary and biogeographic histories, can mislead conclusions about underlying drivers. Our study unravels how and why plant cold and heat tolerances vary globally, and highlights that all plants, particularly at mid-to-high latitudes and in their non-hardened state, are vulnerable to ongoing climate change. Abstract Thermal macrophysiology is an established research field that has led to well-described patterns in the global structuring of climate adaptation and risk. However, since it was developed primarily in animals we lack information on how general these patterns are across organisms. This is alarming if we are to understand how thermal tolerances are distributed globally, improve predictions of climate change, and mitigate effects. -
