One follower asked, “Can’t I just donate NT$15 each month?” But Master refused. She explained that though the amount was the same, it was important to give rise to a kind thought each and every day. From these humble beginnings fifty years ago, Tzu Chi has grown into a global NGO with ten million volunteers and donors in over fifty countries, because it collects not only donations, but also kind hearts. www.tzuchi.us 2 TZU CHI USA FALL 2017 EDITOR’S NOTE odhisattvas are not idols made of wood; real Bodhisattvas are “Bpeople who eat, talk, work and relieve suffering in times of need.” Visit any Buddhist temple and you will see images of Bodhisattvas, great enlightened beings who manifest amazing abilities. Perhaps the most iconic of these is the image of Guanyin, with her thousand eyes observing the suffering in the world and her thousand hands reaching out to relieve those who are in distress. Yet Dharma Master Cheng Yen constantly reminds her disciples that Bodhisattvas are not only found in temples; they are in fact all around us. They are ordinary people, just Tzu Chi volunteers across the U.S. work together and exemplify like you and me. Johan Alwall | Stephanie Fan Jack Fonderwhite | Terry Lin It may seem that ordinary people making small changes in their Devin Makizuru | Wenli Tseng Joseph Vincent daily lives is a far cry from the superhuman powers of the thousand- TRANSLATION hand, thousand-eye Guanyin Bodhisattva. But as Master Cheng Dharma as Water Team Yen herself realized before founding Tzu Chi, when 500 people come SPECIAL THANKS TO together and join their hearts as one, aren’t they equal to one Guanyin? Eric Liang | Dieter Mackenbach New York Tzu Chi volunteers actualized this vision quite literally in Valerie Tseng | Lisa Yu their charity performance last year, and it can be seen in the spirit of Jing Si Publishing Tzu Chi volunteers working in communities all around the world.
