STARTER PLANTS 2020–2021 t’s been an extraordinary year. In fact, current events make the word “extraordinary” feel inadequate. Failing to mention it would feel like ignoring the biggest elephant that ever stomped Iinto the room. But you don’t need us to tell you about it. And it’s not why you’re reading a starter plant catalog. By any measure, two extraordinary things stand out about this year: how extraordinarily well our industry has handled it, and how extraordinarily grateful our end consumers, home gardeners, are that Trade Show we’re here for them. North American retailers have reported record-breaking sales. Schedule We humbly submit that this reinforces what we’ve always said, and deeply felt, about the green industries: We are not a luxury. We’re more than a form of recreation. Though we often benefit from FNGLA Landscape Show impulse buying, it does not define us. Orlando, FL September 17–19, 2020 It also reinforces what old-timers in the industry have said for as long as we old-timers can remember: Hard times are good times for growers. That’s when people stay home and plant gardens. MANTS (MidAtlantic Trade Show) Whether you grow edibles or ornamentals, you fill a real need. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. Baltimore, MD January 6–8, 2021 Doubters can quibble about the importance of that need compared to more elemental hungers, but we defy anyone to deny its existence. GSHE (Gulf States Horticultural Expo) When the pantry is well-stocked, there are still appetites to be nourished. We are the thin green line Mobile, AL that feeds the need for beauty. We make people happy. We keep people sane. Card players check. Coaches call timeouts. In challenging times, growers also think about playing it safe. Instinctively, we gravitate to the tried-and-true. We lean on the staples that our customers, and theirs, handle successfully every time. It’s natural, and it’s smart. But caution can be overdone. It’s also smart to be bold sometimes: To go for the green from that difficult lie, to hold when others fold, to save that timeout and trust your team. Boldness must be tempered with judgement. Yes, offer Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’. The 2007 Perennial Plant of the Year is still a great performer. But up the ante with the larger, longer- lasting plumes of WhisPurr™ Blue and WhisPurr™ Pink. You’d be remiss to omit Dianthus Firewitch. But elevate your game with the Vivid™ series. Bright Light and Cherry Charm are quite bewitching. It’s always smart to play to your strengths, and the perennial industry’s greatest strength is diversity. Like a great garden, the ideal perennial lineup is a carefully curated blend of the expected and the unexpected — exactly what you’ll find in our catalog. Whether you’re holding it in your hands or viewing it on your screen, this is our A game. Make it yours. We’re here to assist while you score.
