They were relocated on reservations where they were subjected to cultural shock by their white conquerors. They endured hunger, disease, and despair. Many studies have been made of the warfare and the ultimate defeat of the Indians. None have explored the vital topic of the health of these people. No other factor is so vital to the success or failure of human endeavor. This study focuses on the government medical care provided the Plains Indians on the Cheyenne-Arapahoe and Kiowa Comanche reservations. It also expl6res the cultural con flict between the white man's medicine and the native medicine men, and what effect that conflict and other contacts with white men had on Indian health. THE COVER Michelle Corona-Allen of the University of Oklahoma Communication Services designed the cover of this book. The three photographs feature images closely associated with Walter Stanley Campbell and his research on Native American history and culture. From left to right, the first photograph shows a ledger drawing by Sioux chief White Bull that depicts him capturing two horses from a camp in 1876. The second image is of Walter Stanley Campbell talking with White Bull in the early 1930s. Campbell’s oral interviews of prominent Indians during 1928-1932 formed the basis of some of his most respected books on Indian history. The third photograph is of another White Bull ledger drawing in which he is shown taking horses from General Terry’s advancing column at the Little Big Horn River, Montana, 1876. Of this act, White Bull stated, “This made my name known, taken from those coming below, soldiers and Crows were camped there.” Available from University of Oklahoma Western History Collections 630 Parrington Oval, Room 452 Norman, Oklahoma 73019 No state-appropriated funds were used to publish this guide. Anthropology and history contain the mcst knowledge pertaining to American Indians, derived from their long traditions of scholarship focusing on American Indians. The other social sciences are far behind. Consequently our social science knowledge about American Indian peoples and their concerns is not balanced but biased by the disciplinary perspectives of anthropology and history. The likelihood that American society contains little realistic knowledge about contemporary American Indians in comparison to knowledge about traditional and historical American Indians is perhaps a function of this disciplinary imbalance. This bibliography enumerates articles on American Indians published in the scholarly journals of history, sociology, geography, political science, economics, and American and ethnic studies through 1976. -

CHAPTER II: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION This annotated bibliography examines nearly fifteen hundred primary and secondary sources that have relevance to those Indians who had an association with the trail. These work cover the years before, during, and after the onset and demise of the road. It is divided into seven subject categories: firsthand narratives, Santa Fe Trail histories, Indigenous nations studies, general histories, military histories, biographies, and bibliographies. Firsthand narratives provide insight for comprehending the ways in which nineteenth-century non-Indians viewed Indians and described encounters. Diaries, reports, correspondence, journals, and memoirs penned by government officials from various governments, missionaries, migrants, soldiers, adventurers, and others who had contact with Indians compose the vast majority of these sources. A few of these accounts provide reliable details about Indian customs, beliefs, social organizations, and while many others simply echo negative racial stereotypes and misinformation. Written histories are a starting point for gaining an understanding of how scholars from various disciplines and history buffs have contextualized Indian relations with the trail. Usually featuring the trail‟s travelers, hardships, growth, and functions, these studies are available in numerous books and journal articles. While presenting Indians with varying degrees of accuracy, detail, and sensitivity, these studies oftentimes highlight the trail‟s significance in the development of the United States with celebratory language and the language of racism. They frequently depict Indians as savage peoples who frequently posed trouble for intrepid trail travelers. Much of the most recent 19 research appears in Wagon Tracks, the official journal of the Santa Fe Trail Association. Each issue contains articles about some component of the trail‟s history that reference Indians. -

USRARla ABSTRACT OF THESIS STRATEGIES OF THE ARAPAHOS AND CHEYENNES FOR COMBATING NINETEENTH CENlURY AMERICAN COLONIALISM The nineteenth century was a period of ttttbulence for the Cheyenne and Arapaho people and both tribes relied on existing culttttal systems of socio-political organization to confront the new challenges brought by this new era of change. At the dawn of the century, the two tribes elected to embrace the horse and a nomadic equestrian lifestyle on the Great Plains. Although the adoption of the horse offered a path to acquire great wealth, the animal's ascendance as the critical material good within both societies stressed existing social relationships. The second new phenomenon confronting the Cheyennes and the Arapahos during the nineteenth century was the influx of American settlers onto the Front Range following the Colorado gold rush. American setders not only brought a contending ecological relationship with the nattttal environment, but also competing conceptions of property and power. These new dynamics threatened the viability of equestrian lifestyles as nattttal resources were put under high levels of stress and became privatized by the new boundaries of capitalism.
