NEWSLETTER Volume 12 No.6 March 15, 2017 Regional Community Airports of Canada AIRPORT PROFILE: Bonnyville Regional Airport (CYBF), AB The Bonnyville Regional Airport is located 3 kilometers north of the Town of Bonnyville and occupies a land area of approximately 77.63 acres and is jointly operated by the Town of Bonnyville and the Municipal District of Bonnyville. The airport serves as a point of call for commercial, corporate and general aviation, and services both private and commercial rotary-wing and fixed-wing operators located on site. Bonnyville Air Services Ltd. provides charter service. The substantial construction of the Bonnyville Regional Airport came from the initial investment in the facility through the Alberta Airport Development Program in 1975. Through 1984, the airport saw the completion of a paved and lighted runway, taxiway and apron. A 1985 runway extension was supplemented by a 1992 final runway extension funded by Alberta Transportation and the Town of Bonnyville. Remedial pavement work was funded by Alberta Transportation with a 1985 pavement overlay and a 1994 fog seal. The Bonnyville Regional Airport is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week and is capable of supporting Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations. Runway 08 and 26 have RNAV approaches with Vertical Guidance with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Overlay. Runway 08 only has Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) available. The maneuvering area consists of one runway and a joining taxiway system plus an aircraft parking apron. The primary runway is 4,433 feet long by 75 feet wide, asphalt. -

AVIATION INVESTIGATION REPORT A08P0353 CONTROLLED FLIGHT INTO TERRAIN (CFIT) PACIFIC COASTAL AIRLINES GRUMMAN G-21A C-FPCK SOUTH THORMANBY ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA 16 NOVEMBER 2008 The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) investigated this occurrence for the purpose of advancing transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability. Aviation Investigation Report Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) Pacific Coastal Airlines Grumman G-21A C-FPCK South Thormanby Island, British Columbia 16 November 2008 Report Number A08P0353 Synopsis At about 1013 Pacific Standard Time, the amphibious Grumman G-21A (registration C-FPCK, serial number 1187), operated by Pacific Coastal Airlines, departed from the water aerodrome at the south terminal of the Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia, with one pilot and seven passengers for a flight to Powell River, British Columbia. Approximately 19 minutes later, the aircraft crashed in dense fog on South Thormanby Island, about halfway between Vancouver and Powell River. Local searchers located a seriously injured passenger on the eastern shoreline of the island at about 1400. The aircraft was located about 30 minutes later, on a peak near Spyglass Hill, British Columbia. The pilot and the six other passengers were fatally injured, and the aircraft was destroyed by impact and post-crash fire. The emergency locator transmitter was destroyed and did not transmit. October 2019 NEWSLETTER “A national organization dedicated to promoting the viability of Regional and Community Airports across Canada” www.rcacc.ca RCAC AIRPORT PROFILE: WilliamsJJul Lake’s BC First Airport – Part 2 In 1950, Canadian Pacific Airlines took over the route from Vancouver to Williams Lake, and larger airplanes began to make the run. Over 500 people, more than half the town, turned out to welcome the first DC-3 as it arrived with CP Air officials on the inaugural flight. They were most impressed with the enthusiasm and friendliness of the locals, but with the facilities — not so much. By 1960, it was obvious that the still unpaved runway was just too small for the size of the planes being purchased by the company, so a new airport was planned. The federal Department of Transportation completed this new facility, B.C.’s 82nd airport, on Fox Mountain in early 1961. The cost was $2Jj million. The Hon. Davy Fulton, Minister of Justice, used an axe to cut the ribbon to open the new complex. The old airport was soon bought up and developed into city housing lots. Ninth and Tenth Avenues South were added, as were Huston and Smedley cross streets. The whole are became known as the Airport Subdivision. Cataline School, prior to being given its current name, was known as Airport Elementary School. In 1996, the Federal Government ceased operating small, regional airports. Williams Lake believed that our city was too large a centre not to have an airport, and so, on Jan. 1, 1997, after some difficult negotiations, the city took over the responsibility for our Williams Lake Regional Airport.
